Default Worklog: TAIG CNC Mill

I've been making a lot of noise recently about buying a CNC Mill for myself for Xmas...

Wanted to see if anyone you had any advice... Here's and email I sent regarding the purchase of a CNC mini-mill:

Quote:
http://www.cartertools.com/

I'm thinking about getting
2019CR-ER
for some prototype work.... and likely some small volume production runs.

Do you have any visiblity about the backorder status of TAIG? are the trending toward 8wks?

I'm thinking of duplicating this guys' work:
http://users.adelphia.net/~wjdupont/...g_cnc_mill.htm
(I first heard about you from:
http://www3.telus.net/public/aschoepp/cnctaig.html)

Both seemed to be giving you good reviews.

From wjdupont's site, I'm thinking of getting your
2019CR-ER for $1055.00
http://www.xylotex.com/4AxSysKit.htm for $425

Am I missing something in having a complete CNC for ~$1500? I already have the Laptop... and as an Electrical Engineer; I have the basic knowledge to figure out how to wire these kits up.

Is there something in your 2027ER package that I'm missing? Does the 2027ER come pre-setup?
To he replied within a couple of hours on SATURDAY:
Quote:
The backorder time once payment is received, right now, appears to be
about 2-4 weeks (judging by recently shipped orders), but I can't
promise anything besides the 2-8 as it all depends on the factory.
Since you are electronically competent I think you will find that doing
your own conversion with the Xylotex kit will save you a lot of money.
You will also need a control program like TurboCNC or Mach2/3
The only difference between the CNC and the CNC ready is the CNC comes
with the steppers, controller, software & cables, the machines are the
same and the CNC ready has the stepper motor mounts.
...
If you are going to use the machine manually you may also want the
handcranks that allow use as a manual machine
-H $20.00 Handcranks for all three axis in addition to CNC motor mounts

Let me know if this helps and if you have more questions.
Looking over his site... his speedy reply... and the reviews I've seen regarding him; I've VERY tempted to get one of the TAIG mills.

Thoughts / Comments / advice?

I've contacted Nick about a taig myself, he was always responsive and friendly. Just trying to make room for it first, then i'll bite.

Good luck with your purchase

I think it would be great for plastic stuff and light work on aluminum.

Personally... I would be interested in something a bit more robust. I think I'd break it.

The ordering process has begun... the most expensive order is waiting on a "bill" from Nick. ;)

I've already begun refurbing a closetted P233MMX laptop to run the mill.

With any luck I'll beat the xmas rush; in a couple of weeks - I'll have my own CNC.

hmmm... that sounds awfully familiar... though the definition to a project is: a project never gets old nor completed... there is allways something to tweak on it
