I'm at a bit of a dead end with my case. I've always intended to have some nice blue metallic flames on my paintjob, however, now that I'm at that point, I can't really fathom how to mask them out. I've already got the base coat laid down.

I realize that I need to mask the area out, that's pretty simple, but how can I get a good looking hot rod esque flame pattern mapped out on the case? I can't draw it by hand, so that's out of the question. I'd like to be able to print an image off on my computer that shows the outline I need to mask, but then I still need an effective method of getting it masked. What sort of tape should I use, so that it'll be thin, highly paint resistant, and easily laid down in curves?

How do the pros do this?

An airbrush, a steady hand, and lots of skill.

Proper fading flames would be really very hard to do. More simple flat colour flames shoudn't be too hard... you would have to draw out the design onto masking tape (you could always trace it if you can't draw freehand) then spray the unmasked area onto the case / panel.

Look at mnpctechs case in the gallery, he has some pretty sweet flame designs.

You don't have to be pro. Just practice a bit.
Below is a guide that shows you how to paint fading flames without the use of air brush. Although i would most definately agree w/ mrplow that air brushing gives best results, this is a good method if your on a budget.

hope it helps.

dammit, is this a competition to see who can reply to each others posts quickest?!

it's not a bad guide. kinda needs practising i think, especially with the dual cannage action to get the blending effect.

I just need to finish edge with pinstripe brush
Now i know how the pinstriping is done, didn't realise it was a special brush, just assumed you kinda put tram lines either side of the area you wanted to stripe.

I find it near impossible to sketch out good lookin' flames, its definately something you needs to practice a lot!!

Thanks for all the replies, guys.

It's funny, because when I was first buying my paint, I was at the autoparts store and I was looking at the various masking tapes. I saw the 3M plastic tape and I figured that's probably what I should use to lay out the shape (after all, I've seen them using a plasticy looking tape on Monster Garage to layout flames). So I was going to purchase it and the guy told me not to buy it because it was too expensive (great salesman). He told me I should use 3M Automotive Masking tape to lay out the flames.

I should've known better, but oh well.

Anyways, I've already laid down the metallic silver basecoat, but the real question is, what color should the flames be? I was thinking metallic copper or metallic blue (although that may look just a little too similar to mnpctech's Nitro case)
