Other than little experience with Super Sculpey clay, I'm a clay noob <_<
I need clay that will adhere to painted metal and harden upon it. I wanna encase an entire cube case in this clay.
Super Sculpey won't stick unless I glue it <_<

I'm using SCI Autostyle Light Clay for my sentinel. It is normally used in the automotive industry for designing cars (what else he?) :)
Degree of hardness is 9 on a scale from 1-10 which means that you don't have to bake it. It will stay in shape as long as you don't heat it up to 90°C, then it melts.
The degree of hardness allows a chip removing process which is necessary for a highly detailed model.
The finished claymodel provides a basis for the gypsum negative which will be used for the final resin model (hopefully) ... I'm new to the whole casting process.
I don't know if it's the proper clay for you aim. Maybe you drop paul aka crimsonsky a msg, he seems to be the right contact person for clay issues.

Milliput looks prety decent. I looked into it a while ago after I saw Mashie use it on his Y2K Bug. It's cheap and comes in different grades too from more coarse stuff to really fine for finishing work.
