Hi;

I am restroring an old Compaq Evo M1020v back to factory settings to pass onto my daughter. The Laptop is about 5 years old and the OS is Windows XP Proffesional SP1, I have the original Compaq Restore CDs which I have used successfully in the past.
My question is once I have restored the OS should I install SP2 which I have on CD or should I just run windows update which hopefully will pick up SP3? Or is SP3 available for download?

here is the link to the full download (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en). I usually use this these days.

Just restored the Compaq using the Compaq Windows XP Restore Cds and then tried to install SP3 but it failed to install saying somthing about the OS that it was being installed upon was too old and needed SP1? Anyone come across that problem?

Just found this on the MS Web:

Looks like you need SP1a or 2 installed before you install SP3!!

Oh well I'll install SP2 then SP3

All sorted now!!

had a few problems on another PC with SP3, automatic updates installed SP3 and then knocked out the DLink USB Wireless Adaptor.
Seems this has been a common problem. Anyway to avoid this its advisable to install SP3 before you install the Dlink DWL G122 USB device that way none of the drivers get screwed up.

Thanks
