Hey fellas.
I have an old collection of mp3's however they were ripped way before the whole tagging thing came about. Some may even be mislabeled.
I need some software that can recognize the mp3's and label them for me.
any ideas?

Try Tagscanner (http://www.xdlab.ru/en/index.htm) mate. I've only used it a couple of times but it works really well.

I've used musicbrainz (http://www.musicbrainz.org) a fair bit over the years - it's usually pretty reliable but can need pointing in the right direction sometimes. Also if you use Winamp the latest versions have an autotagger built in which is actually not too bad considering ( although i nearly always disagree with the genre tags it picks)

What burning app do you use jaguarking?
I use Nero which accesses an online (or local, your choice) database of albums, CDs etc which I find really handy as I don't have to edit track names when making a CD
However, I'm not sure how it deals with single tracks?, I think it will still find the info but you might have to edit compilations by the track?
Never tried musicbrainz (http://www.musicbrainz.org/) but that's 2 out of 4 posts saying to use it. that's usually sufficient for me to check it out lol
gl & hope you find something that suits your needs

he has old mp3s he likely has no idea where they were ripped or came from.
Musicbrainz uses the sound of the track to "id" it.
But it's hit or miss... usually you have to give it a hint... like the artist or songname.

Indeed. Tagscanner does the same, and it has been mostly very reliable the little i have used it, only having problems with a couple of my more obscure albums.

aah right,
if they are more obscure then a lot might not properly id em
dunno Tagscanner or musicbrainz?, I'll giv em a look
when I put my vinyl & tapes into digital format I had to go through every single bloody track, although a few albums were just done as whole mp3s but prefer single tracks
'UnknownTrack -01' bugs the hell out of me too :-)

I am giving it a shot now. Thanks for the input guys. I will let you know how it went.:toast:
Haven't checked it out lately but in the past I've used Tag&Rename+ which was good in that you could scan your albums against the FreeCDDB and it would automatically give you tagging options.
You could also batch rename everything with a few clicks...
Anyone used both that and TagScanner to know how they stack up against each other?

I'm with Pug, I just got the new version of Tag&Rename, and along with FreeCCDB it also matches against Amazon (.com, .co.uk, .de, .ca, etc) which gives it a lot more choice.
Sadly I've not used the other ones. I've got some really old ones that I could try with TagScanner. May give that a go tonight.
