When the Wifey switches her PC on it goes through all it's usual steps right up to the Windows splash screen and then re-boots, then does it again over and over.
No changes have been made to either the software or hardware, in fact nowt has changed apart from the fact that it won't bloody start.
Any ideas as to what is going on and how to sort it out ?

EDIT: BTW, the PC does not shut itself down from the BIOS screens only when Windows is loading.

Try going in in Safe Mode (F8 before the splash screen for options) and see where it gets you.

If you can boot into Safe Mode, try -

WinKey + Pause/Break = System Properties
On the Advanced tab - click the Settings button under Startup and Recovery.
Under System Failure at the bottom, untick the Automatically restart option.
You should now be able to see any error messages displayed, either Google 'em or post them back in here :thumb:

Just tried that and it won't go into safe mode, it starts putting up a huge list of God knows what and then re-boots again.

I had something like this. Does it quickly flash a BSOD?

If so it might be a registry thing. I needed to re-install windows.

I don't suppose it had recently been updated to SP3? Clicky (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9085358)

I don't think so but I'll check with her when she gets home, That does sound like the problem though.
Could it have been updated to SP3 through the Windows Updated thingy ?

I don't know.

I've got updates switched on, but it's set to ask before installing them. I haven't had SP3 come through yet, and I don't want it if it can turn your rig into a dribbling wreck.

We think she did updates set to install automatically so maybe thats how it got into her poota, assuming it was in fact SP3 that was the problem, I have it set to ask before d'loading now so hopefully there should be no more bother with it.

Cheers Russ......yer a canny lad !!

I'm running SP3 with no ill effects - I had to go to Microsoft update and install it manually. However I know MS did pull the original RTM build of SP3 due to some compatibility issues.

This post (http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesper/archive/2008/05/08/does-your-amd-based-computer-boot-after-installing-xp-sp3.aspx) has a lot of info on the issue

It does sound like SP3 could have been the culprit...

You would need to wipe out your hard drives and reinstall windows because their is a problem with DLL_system_32.
