Thanks Nexxo. I've been droolin' all morning. One of your posts led me here: http://www.apple.com/displays/

You guys that know a bit about me understand my passion for lots of screen real estate. Well, the idea of having three thirty inch flat panels runnin' on one 'puter has me giddy. If Apple has done it, I'm sure some other flat panel companies will be following them.

So now the big question is, will there be a robust dual Opteron board in our future that can handle the three dual DVI cards required? A resolution of 7680 x 1600... damnjehosaphatbewilakers!!!

At least they've given me the basis for the next rig... I hope the mobo folks follow suit and make a cool Opty workstation board with three PCI Express slots.

I guess its time to rekindle the next case project... :o

'Scuse me while I get back to plannin'... or is it dreamin'? Ya know danged well I'm gonna pull this off somehow...

Definately time for a beer.

OK Dutch, that was too much excitement for you. Time for another cold shower... C'mon now... :D

O.K., cold shower didn't help...

I figure that being realistic, this arrangement could be done with good performance with "only" two PCI Express slots. Its a 30" Apple Cinema flanked by two of my Samsung 213T's.

I hate being realistic, but think I could live with this.

After some rude cardboard mock-up tests... its clear that three 30" screens would give one a serious case of sore neck, unless the chair was many feet (two meters for the feetless) away from the monitoirs.

Time for another beer.

Why don't you just drill a hole in the base of your skull and get a direct neuro-optic implant? No wait, wrong century...

As part of my new job (in psycho-oncology; i.e. psychological support and interventions for patients with cancer, their families and staff working with them) I have been attending some Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings where surgeons and nurses go over the CT and MRI scans... There is some serious imaging technology involved: for instance two 23" ultra-high res TFT monitors side-by-side, hooked to a top-of-the-line Dell... yummie! Took some effort to maintain professional composure... :D

Same problem I had when getting my eyes OK'd for LASIK, so much nice top pf the line stuff crammed into a room with people who are afraid of it, sigh.

What's the plan on using the monitors? You do mean a continuation of the desktop onto all 3? Just need to hope they make PCI-X1 graphics or pray to your god of choice that they do make a more than 1 set of SLI (2 PCI-X16's is a single set) options per board for the really really nice server boards. Ooh... Judging by my 26" non PC LCD, I think two meters is going to be the minumum distance, I think a nice cushy 10 to 12 feet would work better to avoid the LEFT >< RIGHT >< LEFT >< UP >< DOWN >< *POP* >< AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! MYYYYYYYY NEECCKKKKKK!!!!!!!

As part of my new job (in psycho-oncology; i.e. psychological support and interventionsIt was when I got that far when I thought you were gonna intervene on my life with an emergengy psychological intervention.

Plan on using those monitors... I'm gonna use just one in the middle with two of these 21.3" LCD's on the sides. I tried it in cardboard and the head swivel is tolerable.

I use my rig for designing stuff and spinning 3D models for clients is a rather important thing. I'm thinkin' that putting the model in the 30" monitor will be better than trying to spin it across two or three. I use three because when I work, there's usually a drawing in the center while two other drawings are on the side monitors... making changes on multiple drawings a piece of cake.

I print these drawings out either 24" x 36" or 36" x 48"... so a larger monitor will make zooming in and out to see the details of these drawings a less frequent thing.

I've almost convinced myself...

Well, I'm only a hop across Nevada and then into the four corners (you know the famous 4). When there, head south into peachy New Mexico. Peachy isn't the word, as there are no peaches (or anything other than allergy causing dry plants, tumbleweeds and cacti). Oh, I'm in the state capitol too, itsa not so fun place, and it's bad for black because dust is so heavy it will coat anything dark within minutes. If I'd only bought my case in silver I wouldn't have to wipe it off every 10 seconds... Nevermind. Uh, I don't drink anymore so, as long as you serve juice (I'm lactose intolerant too :().

Why don't you just buy one of those projectors and shoot the screen on to a blank wall?

Slight lack of resolution on a projector.

Do you guys in the US have High Definition TV broadcasts yet?

We're starting to see more TV's that are HD capable but last i heard the first ppl to have it over here would be through Sky Digital - at a premium cost though, and thats not until 2006!!

dutchcedar
11th October 2004, 21:27
Satan... My work has to be extremely accurate... something I've never seen from projectors. For me its all about high resolutions, accurate images and accurate colors. Lots of skinny lines of varying thicknesses means super crisp images are a must. :h34r:

fillip... Yah, there's a lot more HDTV available here. Football is the big sports event on it, but I understand NASCAR is there already too. You need to pay more for the service, though... surprise, surprise...

Theres already a european satellite channel showing limited high def content and i believe if you have a sky dish and digi box you can pick it up. Sky wont tell you anything about it as its a competitor to them.

You can buy video upscalers which will convert any video signal into high def if you have an appropriate TV and most mid to high-end DVD players and surround sound recievers do high def video upscaling. Also if your building a HTPC you can use FDD show and an ATI card to upscale to high def fairly cheaply.

Does anyone watch Nascar for the racing or just for the crashes? I've tried to watch it and enjoy it a few times but oval racing is soooo boring. :(

Starbuck3733T

AFAIK all programming in the US MUST be high def by 2006. Then we have to buy boxes to DOWNSCALE to 480i. Bah! There has to be a transitionary period there.

I tried downloading a rip of The Matrix the other day, said it was HDTV compliant (I do own the VHS version of it, but I have no way of playing that on my PC)

It was TEN frigging gigabytes!
I have been getting a few episodes of Smallville that say HDTV in the filename, and the quality of those compared to the others (DivX?) is amazing. I'd love to see what they look like on a full-blown super-size telly.*

*scientific phrase ;)

I'm with you on that one oval track racing is so tedious -_- Mind you having said that F1 isn't much better these days....

NASCAR rocks!!!

Back in the day, I was a big F1 fan... went to a few F1 races and even raced my own Lotus Elan... yah, me big Colin Chapman fan.

But today? F1 technology is exciting, the races are booooring.

NASCAR technology may be boring, but the racing is exciting. Give me Talladega anytime.

Hey i drive the M8 pretty much every day when i'm @home - maybe we should enter a Wizd Team into Nascar next year :)

i went to the touring cars @ knockhill this year - quite nice to actually see some overtaking for once.......

Da_Rude_Baboon

So was knockhill freezing cold or boiling hot? I swear that place only has 2 types of wheather. Its either so hot it burns the skin right off your head or its cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.

I was going to go to the touring cars this year as the Type-R Scotland club had arranged it so you could park up trackside, instead of miles away in a field, and get a tour of the racing Type-Rs. Unfortunalty the house modding got in the way....again!

Well when we arrived it was so foggy you couldn't see the track and the start was delyed by an hour for saftey consequently it was sodding freezing. Come 12 o'clock the fog buggers off, out comes the sun and we all got surburnt  lived up to the usual really ;)

Now you come to mention it there were al lot of type R's kicking around. But they were letting everybody park trackside this year so i hope they weren't charging you guys extra for that

Other than that it was pretty good this year, the support races were good this year, and because of the delay at the start the action was pretty non stop...which was nice :)
