View Full Version : So I was real bored...

I just happen to have a whole bunch of old 386 and 486 type boards lying around, none of which work. I was planning on painting the wall in my workspace green and mount the motherboards to make it look like a big mobo.

http://img62.exs.cx/img62/227/mobo1.jpg

Anyway, I just so happen to have an extra soyo dragon mobo with a 2200+ XP, and a stick of kingston hyper X 333, along with a PSU and a CD drive. Looking at my mobo mess I thought why not make a computer with all these parts? A computer made from scratch out of mobo's! Yeah, like my briefcase project it's been done, but I haven't.

So I present to you, project Mother-bored.

First I got out some hinges and screwed the mobo's together. I decided to go with plexi glass for the bottom and top of the system.

http://img65.exs.cx/img65/2950/mobo5.jpg

I mounted the soyo to the plexi and used two sets of hinges for the sides.

http://img65.exs.cx/img65/3755/mobo7.jpg

Next I took a pic of what the case may look like with the plexi top.

http://img65.exs.cx/img65/2002/mobo8.jpg

And looking through the glass...

http://img65.exs.cx/img65/2734/mobo9.jpg

I then cut out the I/O port. I'll have to cut out the CD drive later being careful so I can stealth it later.

http://img65.exs.cx/img65/5585/mobo9-1.jpg

Then I thought, WTF am I missing? VENTILATION!

http://img65.exs.cx/img65/7498/mobo9-3.jpg

And that's all I have for now. This project was thought of and brought to the above point in 2 1/2 hours. I used all parts I had on hand. Obviously, I'm not done. I'll go out and buy some more hinges tommorrow. And, I have no HD. Well, I do have a 4.3GB drive with XP, but it's nearing it's demise. When I finish this up I'll post more pics. SOme with the lights off too. After all, I do have extra cathodes lying around too.

That's gonna be painful if a molex gets stuck and you have to do the flying hand backwards trick :D

I think we've got a true mod fanatic in our midst.

Cool idea Satan.. Very BORG-like.

Took the words right out of my mouth man!

I added some lights and a PSU to it to test it out.

http://img8.exs.cx/img8/2775/cube4.jpg

Then I hinged the plexi to the top.

http://img8.exs.cx/img8/4558/cube6.jpg

http://img8.exs.cx/img8/948/cube7.jpg

When I was done, I had to start thinking about where to mount the PSU, so I added long screws to act as shelves. I will cut some more plexi and add it here to set the PSU and CD drive onto.

I'm gonna work on it more tommorrow, maybe I'll finish it then too.

So, I cut out some more plexi for the shelf.

http://img54.exs.cx/img54/1489/plexi.jpg

Then dropped it in place

http://img54.exs.cx/img54/2959/shelf1.jpg

Then I set in the CD drive and the PSU. Ooops! The PSU ATX mobo connector is short. I'll have to go out and get an extension.

http://img54.exs.cx/img54/3505/cube_done2.jpg

http://img54.exs.cx/img54/4058/cube_done3.jpg

Finally to complete the look I stealthed the CD drive. When I get that extender tomorrow I'll take pics with the CD tray open and the computer on.

And...

I have no intension of keeping this Mod. Once I get all the pics I need, I'm just gonna disassemble it and use the primary components elsewhere.

Aww, forshame. if its standard ATX you should at least try to sell it as a computer and or modern art on ebay.

TheGreatSatan

I thought about that. As long as I sell it barebones it'll be O.K. I just don't want to lose the main parts.

I've got this huge desire to build a cube case.... I wonder why? ;)

TheGreatSatan
29th September 2004, 16:30
You've got the tools, why not?

Also, I've considered making a full tower case out of motherboards.

TheGreatSatan

The motherboard cube is done. I bought the ATX power extension and connected it all up. It took me a total of 8 1/2 hours. Here's the final pics.

http://img75.exs.cx/img75/7923/finished6.jpg

http://img75.exs.cx/img75/1161/finished7.jpg

So now that it's done, and I don't actually want to keep it, I stripped it all down. I wonder what I can do with it??

That's what I was telling people. This is not an original thought. I know that I've seen it before, except theirs was completely motherboards and no plexi.
