(First Post, deep breath, relax....)
Hello to all.. i'm Reckless_Sniper (usually from Ars) also known as kcarbuncle (pseudonym) or by my real name, Kristoffer "Kris/KC" Carillo.
i live at the small city of Manila, Phils.
The place is decieving but there is a very active modding and PC community here (some things are a bit lacking though.)..
Just joined here for some ideas and info and such since i'm doing a big one right now (done small things like cutting out grills, adding a new sidepanel, etc..).
i'm posting the pics and details of the first ideas on my blog.

(in the future, it might not be as updated as the post on ars)
Ciao!

Welcome to our moddin realm :dremel:
Thought I'd introduce myself, I don't usually, but this looks like it could be quite interesting with a lot of like minded folk.
Name is Stan in east Scotland and been building and modding PC's since about 91. Used to overclock by changing crystals and hand modding the MD, even overformatting HD to increase capacity. (Softsectored disks, MFM encoding)
First PC was an 8088, then 8086, a 286 with 287, 386SX16, 386DX with 87 and every step up to my present array of machines. Never much cared how they looked as I was constantly changing, but tarted up a few others.
(In the region of about 100 machines) Even fitted a standard keyboard to my Speccy when I was about 15.
Need stability in my life now so the PC should have a chance to shine and want to do something special.
Presently gathering the hardware to have two main network machines looking good, and might need the benefit of others experience on some of my choices.
Cheers

Wow, stan thats some impressive skills. My first pc project was reviving an 386DX from my uncle's old pc parts bin. Overclocking was elusive to me at that time. or the thought of cutting a window in your box.... what?!
Look forward to learning whatever you can share with us and likewise.

Hello all,
Just thought I'd introduce myself, since that seems to be the thing to do. My screen name is InigoMontya27, after the movie Princess Bride. My real name is Kevin, and I currently own my own business, Pangea Computer & Home Theater. Mostly I do repairs, troubleshooting, and custom builds. I've done some mods on my home computer, but I want to get better before I start offering that option to my computer customers. I have a case I bought about 5 years ago, a no-name black tower that has seem some changes. I'll be posting some pics in the work logs section so I can get some advice. I've been building systems for about 10 years now, and I really enjoy hardware. I hate software and writing code, not just because it's boring but because most programmers I've met are too fat from sitting around all the time. No offence to any programmers reading this...Anyways, I just got done carving out my business name in my side panel, which is covered in carbon fiber vinyl. I used this site's advice and used 2 layers of plexi with modder's mesh inbetween. Looks pretty good, but I need to light it up. I'm looking into doing a front turbine intake mod and need some advice on that because my front bezel is curved plastic and I really don't want to paint if I don't have to. Well, hope to see you guys around, this site is definitely the best out there. Good job!

Hey, newbie me here. I'm Him, come from a few other forums. I'm new to case modding, really hope to get it underway very soon. It was Bill's Pink Floyd Inc case that inspired me to start doing mods. I'm 20, live in the US, in Massachusetts. Huge computer geek, too geeky for my liking, but hey, it's what I enojoy and makes me money. Plus, whenever somoene tries to make fun of me, I will be nice and content in the fact that I will be FAR happier than them in life with the ridiculously large salary I will be making that is 5X what they are making.
hoping to get some sort of divine inspiration from this site, and hope to be a big contributing member in months to come. Look forward to getting all your feedback on me things.

Hey all, first time here, and I love it. Absolutely amazed with some of the case mods done here.
Heres a lil bout me: Im a college student at suny buffalo, and have been into computers since I tore my old computer apart at 6 years old. I've built a good dozen gaming rigs (on the inside. on the outside their crude and ugly) However, I've not really gotten into the neater stuff of building computers yet. I've gotten sick and tired of just putting stuff in a stock case, and am tryin to learn as much as I can about modding.
I'm hoping that some of my metal-working skills will help. I've taken several courses in blacksmithing, and love metal-working.
Thanks, and love the work you guys put out!

Sup guys, here's a little bit about me:
I'm a 15 year old high school junior from PA...mostly a musician.
As far as computers, I just got off an HP and finally bought my first custom setup...well sort of. I kept the 2.4GHz P4 and 512 megs of PC2100 from my HP and replaced everything else overclocked it to 3GHz bought a 6800 unlocked it some etc. Here's a few pics:
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/joshsmod/rambling.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/rambling.jpg)
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/joshsmod/enclosuredevice.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/enclosuredevice.jpg)
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/joshsmod/nvgrill.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/nvgrill.jpg)
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/comp.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/rambling.jpg)
I haven't modded it at all really, I just got it about a week or two ago. I really don't know what to do with it either...I need a good theme. Suggestions?
I have a pretty decent arsenal of tools at my disposal...jig saw, mitre saw, pad sander, bench grinder, and a friend with a router and dremel. Plus a friend with a stepdad who has a powdercoating setup. :thumb:
First mod I really did was a few months ago to an old HP case a friend of mine had. We repainted it dark metallic gray and repainted the blue parts a different shade of blue then drenched it with clearcoat to make a nice gloss. Plus I cut a window in it and somewhat sleeved the PSU with electric tape. We did this in under 24 hours I was just sleeping over at his house...so we never really finished it and touched it up. But it was a cool experience. Some pics of that:
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/joshsmod/puter1.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/puter1.jpg)
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/joshsmod/puter2.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/puter2.jpg)
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/joshsmod/puter3.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/puter3.jpg)
Those were unfinished pics, before lotsa clearcoat went on the blue. I'm not direct linking cuz they're kinda big.
Here's some more of it in its present state:
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/joshsmod/hp2.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/hp2.jpg)
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/joshsmod/hp3.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/hp3.jpg)
This is what that clearcoat really looks like, hard to tell in the pics:
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/joshsmod/clearcoat.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/clearcoat.jpg)
So yeah those are my muses. I have that exact same case sitting in my basement, stock HP style. I guess my to do list would be to:
1. Mod that HP case

Weird, Putertopia works fine for me...
I was thinkin of some themes for my cases...I'm thinkin of making an Emerson Lake and Palmer case...like Brain Salad Surgery style...or maybe a case modeled after Reason, which is this awesome music software...really cool logo:

Good thing there's also a place at the mall for airbrushing...handy for side panels and windows.
Eventually my mom might learn to program her CNC machine at work...now that would be gold

Argh! Maybe UK DNS servers don't like putertopia.
Is it workin for any yanks here? I'll quote the post so you don't have to dig:
Sup guys, here's a little bit about me:
I'm a 15 year old high school junior from PA...mostly a musician.
As far as computers, I just got off an HP and finally bought my first custom setup...well sort of. I kept the 2.4GHz P4 and 512 megs of PC2100 from my HP and replaced everything else overclocked it to 3GHz bought a 6800 unlocked it some etc. Here's a few pics:
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/joshsmod/rambling.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/rambling.jpg)
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/joshsmod/enclosuredevice.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/enclosuredevice.jpg)
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/joshsmod/nvgrill.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/nvgrill.jpg)
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/comp.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/rambling.jpg)
I haven't modded it at all really, I just got it about a week or two ago. I really don't know what to do with it either...I need a good theme. Suggestions?
I have a pretty decent arsenal of tools at my disposal...jig saw, mitre saw, pad sander, bench grinder, and a friend with a router and dremel. Plus a friend with a stepdad who has a powdercoating setup. :thumb:
First mod I really did was a few months ago to an old HP case a friend of mine had. We repainted it dark metallic gray and repainted the blue parts a different shade of blue then drenched it with clearcoat to make a nice gloss. Plus I cut a window in it and somewhat sleeved the PSU with electric tape. We did this in under 24 hours I was just sleeping over at his house...so we never really finished it and touched it up. But it was a cool experience. Some pics of that:
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/joshsmod/puter1.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/puter1.jpg)
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/joshsmod/puter2.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/puter2.jpg)
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/joshsmod/puter3.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/puter3.jpg)
Those were unfinished pics, before lotsa clearcoat went on the blue. I'm not direct linking cuz they're kinda big.
Here's some more of it in its present state:
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/joshsmod/hp2.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/hp2.jpg)
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/joshsmod/hp3.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/hp3.jpg)
This is what that clearcoat really looks like, hard to tell in the pics:
http://www.putertopia.com/~filip/MyPictures/joshsmod/clearcoat.jpg (http://www.putertopia.com/%7Efilip/MyPictures/joshsmod/clearcoat.jpg)
So yeah those are my muses. I have that exact same case sitting in my basement, stock HP style. I guess my to do list would be to:
1. Mod that HP case
2. Make an acrylic micro case
3. Mod my current case
So yeah, hiya guys...that's me in terms of computers.

Domain propagation* takes up to 72 hours.
* - time it takes for all DNS servers on the World Wide Web to acknowledge changes to a domain name.
".COM"s can take as little as 6 hours.

edit: Hehe, I was referring to my saying welcome to --filip--, not my welcoming ;) I got my welcoming, and was satisfied.
I've worked mostly with 1/4" and 1/8" square and round stock, but I've seen how real plate armor's been made, and I've got a few books on the subject, so yeah, I sorta know about sheet-beating work. Its all about the inverse surface your working on. I've seen people work on the inside of a hollowed out log (smoothed into a sphere), or working on a barstool with the padding replaced with sand. Theres even a mandrel used by armorsmiths for such platework.
I just hate where I live. Neighbors always breathing down my neck, complainin bout my rukus and my smoky forge (even if its only a small portable one). But heck, I gotta start somewhere.
The guy who taught blacksmithing nearby... hes gone into retirement, after a lifetime of ferrying (not the same as blacksmithg, but similar), his back is quite literally broken.
I also went for some training down in pittsburg PA, where I learned knife-making, and damascus billet smithing. Of course I doubt many of you know what this is. But I had alot of fun doing it.
Ooh, armour? Now there's a thought I hadn't had...
Hmm, ever learn how to make a louvre punch? :naughty:
:wiz:
Bambini
12th July 2005, 22:22
nope. Just looked it up tho. Pretty cool stuff. I could see how it'd make for some cool designs. Just about the only punches we learned were hot and cold hole/rivet punches, for making your own wrenches and tongs and such.

A friend of mine used to work for this guy who owns the server which is based in Arizona, and that guy in turn gave him space on there.
My friend just emailed some lady who's supposed to renew it yesterday, so I guess it's pending.
I can still see everything...guess it hasn't dropped off Comcast DNS servers yet. Here's the pics I wanted to show ya of an unfinished HP mini mod:

ooh, and while I have your attention... I suppose that introductions are in order?
Steve is my name. I am starting my second year of college. I should be graduating with an Associate's degree in Internet Technologies next spring.
I've been into modding for quite a while. Honestly I've never started an endeavor such as this one. I've only ever put blowholes, lighting and windows in existing cases. Paint and such I'm somewhat comfortable with, but this will be the true test of my knowledge of painting. I've read Linear's tutorial on "show car finish" paint jobs. I've also studied up on my electronics and whatnot due to the fact that this mod will be featuring a fair number of super bright LEDs. 21 I've estimated so far. (mostly on fans.)

Hello all....I have sorta been stalking around for awhile now so I figured I should introduce myself. My name is Doug and I'm an addict! I have been taking things apart and putting them back together for a long time now; about four years ago, I discovered computers, started learning about them and discovered I enjoyed it. Then along came modding!!! I haven't been the same since. I am still very Noob but learning....:dremel:
I love all of the work logs and all I have seen on here and Bill, just wanted to say I love your work! Been hanging around your site for a long time and have even bought some things from the site (those rheobus' rock). I am getting ready to start a few projects here soon (as soon as it cools off a little here in Florida) and am looking forward to posting logs about them and getting feedback and ideas. Keep up the good work and hope to get to the same skill level someday :D

Ah, sod it...
We like to encourage worthwhile contributions here at WizD - hence, although 100 spammy posts might automatically get you an avatar in some places; here, we'd like to encourage more forethought and constructive input (where possible). To accomplish this, you'll find that some people will get an avatar long before their 100 post mark if a worthwhile contribution (to WizD or the modding scene in general) is recognised.
This may be in the form of a stellar posting pattern or even a financial donation towards keeping this place running (as Ninja aptly demonstrated ;-)).
One thing our best contributors have in common is the selfless attitude of contributing without expectation of reward (which is why we try to play it down when someone asks).
You'll find that posters with their own agenda often don't make it to the 100post mark anyway (for one reason or another :magic: :h34r:).
Avs aren't that important, anyway - just chill, relax & enjoy the place. Help it to become something better than it is and we'll all be rewarded. B)
Welcome to all.

Well as I am already plundering people's experience for advice seems only appropriate to introduce myself!!
Tracked down this forum whilst looking for information on Aquacomputer products. Great looking kit but this was definitely the place with the most informed discussion on it.
So about me?!? Old fart IT guy who has been playing with PC's for a while but only decided to build one from scratch a year ago mainly due to the totally disgraceful build quality of PC's from mainstream suppliers.
Current Rig is:-
Lian-Li PC71 (3 * 7v 80mm fans)
Asus A8V + 1gb 3200 Ram
FX53
X800XT PE
2 * 74Gb Raptors in Raid 0 in Silentmaxx HD enclosures
1 * 250gb WDSE again in SIlentmaxx HD Enclosure
Plextor DVD/RW
Matrix Orbital LCD (its about looks & quiet more than speed for me usually!!)
Zalman Reserator (CPU + VGA) - A good quiet replacement for air cooling but struggles with too much heat!!)
Why I am here? Looking to do a fully insternal rad res pump + sli etc installation in my PC 71 largely based on Aquacomputer stuff 'cos it is beautiful, but thats for another thread.

Since Starbuck has asked so nicely I guess I should introduce myself. I've been lurking on BitTech for a long time now and when Tribaloverkill got squashed there I followed the project over here.
I'm likely a bit older than many of the people here; I've been in the computer industry for about 25 years. Mostly doing design and architecture for large distributed systems. CTO for a couple of start-ups, now mostly consulting. For the last 4 years I've been working on a very complex system for the collection of medical research data.
I'm married with two children 6 1/2 and 2 1/2. We all reside in Memphis, TN along with a couple of cats. Our youngest has Cerebral Palsy so I've got my hands full without attempting any large projects, I don't even have time to clean up the office.
I grew up with a father who used to build his own photo processing and stereo equipment an d renovate the house regularily so the DYI gene is in my blood. (If Dad was still alive he'd love these forums.) When I was younger I modified a bunch of guitars and built my own electronics for them, and built other electronics and furniture. I've renovated a couple houses top to bottom, including things like moving the stair cases (that stopped when I got married). I've currently got a good sized wood working shop in the dimly lit basement of a large 80 year old house. If I do take on a project I'll need to mod the basement first: new power capabilities and more lighting.
There's some chance I may have time to take on a medium sized project start of next year or so. If I do, it will be a Media center hub networked to the three other PC's currently in the house and likely a Sonus (which may arrive soon). Common sense says put a server type box in the basement in a rack along side cable, phone and networking feeds and other supporting equipment. If I don't yield to common sense it will look something like this:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b198/PHunsberger/HTPC-overview.jpg
Mostly passive water cooling, with some perceptive tricks to make the case look thiner than it really is (all the width in the bottom where you can't see it without looking around back). Fiber optics and two, maybe three (if I can afford it) cooling loops.
And with that teaser, I'll go back to lurking now...

Nice introduction Pete! You sound like an interesting guy with an equally interesting basement.. :h34r:
Let us know how you get on with the Sonus as its something which has perked my interest more than once but unfortunatly is a bit out of my price league atm.
pdh
12th September 2005, 18:21
Thanks all,
Starbuck; no Sketchup here, can't justify the cost for the limited use I'd currently make of it. Rather, just an ancient copy of Corel Draw (poor scale drafting capabilities, sigh)
Vis; I'm a pretty common sense kind of guy, but I like building stuff even more than listening to my common sense. Since the Sonus doesn't do video distribution there is some justification for having at least some kind of DVD/video access on the main floor. It willl be mainly an issue of finding the time.
Pug; given your avatar I'll just take your word that it's a compliment ;-)
Baboon (or is it Da Rude?); The Sonus should happen end of the month, early next month. I had an amp that was running two rooms die, and we've already got DVD, CD, and PC equipment scattered through out the house. The Sonus would let me integrate everything and solve the amp issue and give me the Sonus controller to play with (and maybe hack). :thumb:

(I'll keep this short as I have bed to attend to)
I saw a bunch of linkies pointing here, so I'm givin it a go! I just recently found this group of sites (BitTech, WizD, mnpctech) and have been completely hooked on finding everything I can and learning as much as possible about modding. I'm a computer networking student from Northern Ohio, and will be graduating high school in June 06. After high-school, I hope to get accepted into MIT (The MIT) for Computer Hardware Engineering (though I wouldn't mind spending a summer or 2 apprenticing with mnpctech... you're amazing, sir ). Once I feel I've learned enough, I plan on makin' motherboards for a living, and from the looks of it, will have PC modding to fall back on as a hobby http://wizdforums.co.uk/images/smilies/thumb.gif.
Lookin forward to making a name for myself 'round here -
