That first link is an ftp link, try it like this:

http://godsunicorn.co.uk/httpdocs/Galleries/Temp/Tech%20Shrimp.gif

Well, that doesn't work either, so I guess the path is wrong or you haven't uploaded the image properly.

I don't wanna be patronising or anything so if you already know half the stuff I say, just slap me. :thumb:

FTP, stands for File Transfer Protocol and is a method of transferring files from one place to another over the web - predominantly from your PC to your webspace.
Once you have the file on your webspace you would link to it like you would any other web site. (or image on that website) That means the link will start 'http://' rather than 'ftp://'. The 'FTP' precursor will only attempt to sign you in to your web hosting if clicked as opposed to linking to your image. Your browser is probably set to remember your logon info for your web hosting whereas for everyone else we just get a username and password prompt.

Dunno - when I dabbled with a website I used the 1&1 website creator program, which was total shite.

I guess you'll have to create a page on your PC and upload it via an online console.

An index page should be in the route folder. Its the page that automatically gets displayed when someone enters your url, and it should be called index.htm. If you make a sub folder (with your FTP program or plesk probably) in that route folder to put your pics in it will automatically create a page like eddie's. So you would have www.godsunicorn.co.uk/newfolder. Does that make sense?

For FTP use http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/ Its the best ive tried.

Is that index file replaceable, I think I must have dumped it during a dummy spitting session when I couldn't get it to work.

:duh: Thanks for the correction Phil, my brain aint working great at the mo with this flu *acchoo*.

Gary, the index.htm file wont have been there when you started with the account. you have to make one. Its any old html webpage, but it just has to be called "index.htm" for the browser to automatically load the page when the user types www.godsunicorn.co.uk into his browser. Gary, i took the liberty of creating a very basic index.htm file for you. Copy the code into a txt document and save it as "index.htm" (with the quotes) and upload it into the root folder (it might be called www... see below)
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
<html>
<head>
<title>Not ready yet..</title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<style type="text/css">
<!--
body,td,th {
font-size: 10px;
color: #CCCCCC;
}
body {
background-color: #000000;
}
.style1 {
font-size: 36px;
font-family: Tahoma;
}
.style3 {font-size: 16px}
-->
</style></head>
<body>
<div align="center" class="style1">
<h1><strong>GodsUnicorn.co.uk</strong></h1>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong><span class="style3">The site is under construction right now ....</span></strong></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
</div>
</body>
</html>

The page that you are looking at on Eddie's site is an automatically created page that just lists the files in that folder. There needs to be permissions set for any user to be able to access that folder, on my space every new folder is unrestricted, you have to set the restrictions if you dont want the folder to be visible to anyone. I dont know if that the same with your host, or plesk (my host has cpanel instead).

Try this... Load up your FTP proggie (again i recommend filezilla - its ace) Log into your server. You might (i have one on mine, and a plesk one ive used too) find a folder called "www". Open it up then right click to create a new folder. Lets call it "smileys" given your talent for making them. Then upload into that folder your smiley images. Then open up your browser and go to www.godsunicorn.co.uk/smileys and you should get a similar list of files that are contained in that folder, like your seeing on Eddie's site.

I don't seem to have a folder called 'www.'

I wish I could just give you the password and let you sort it out as I don't have a clue.

fivecheebs
9th December 2006, 00:20
Nah, i was afraid of that.

What you can do though is put that index.htm into the root, then other folders one by one removing it each time you put it into another folder. Then do a hard refresh of your main URL. Then you will tell which folder is the root.

You could take some screenies for us to guess at. Or you can PM me with the details and ill have a look. Failing that you could join onto 3dpn's irc channel and ask alan direct.

GodsUnicorn
9th December 2006, 00:40
Do you mean the password and username ?

fillip
9th December 2006, 10:58
The 'root' folder on 3DPN servers will have about 15/16 sub-directories in it. The one you need to navigate to is the folder called 'httpdocs'. The 'httpdocs' folder is the root for all of your standard webpages, so this is where the index page will need to go.

Thanks Fill, I still dont have an index page but I do have this.... http://godsunicorn.co.uk/index.htm
Hopefully a step in the right direction. Why am I so bad at this stuff when everyone else seems to find it so easy ?

Actually, you do have an Index page! - that's an index.htm page, the page that loads in a web browser by deafult when you navigate to your web space. :thumb: :applaud:

fivecheebs
10th December 2006, 00:19
:w00t: nice one Gary.

The index page you mean is like this... www.cheebs.co.uk/images right?

The folder that you put the index.htm, put another folder in the same place (like the "try this" bit in my previous post). Then put some images in there. Then load the directory with your browser and you should see the indexy kinda page your after (its actually just the way the web browser displays folder contents in a non restricted folder).

Sorry i didnt get around to looking yet, but it looks like youve figured it out anyway. Let me know if you want me to have another look, or talk you through it again. :thumb:

Thats exactly what I'm after.:thumb:

Anyway. Let me know if you want me to have another look,:thumb:

That would be great if you don't mind, I have to start ripping the house apart tomorrow ready for the gas men, so I won't be able to concentrate on this for very long.

Cheers

To achieve what you want Gary - www.cheebs.co.uk/images (http://www.cheebs.co.uk/images), you need to be able to turn on 'directory browsing' for that specific folder. What that does is let you view the contents of that folder, a la Windows Explorer. With 3DPN I think Directory Browsing is turned off and I'm not sure you can enable it for individual folders. I may be wrong but a quick email to 3DPN asking about it should clear that up for you.

If you have a load of images you'd like to see listed in that fashion, I have a little PHP script I wrote a few months back to perform just that function for additional smilies I have on my webspace - http://themodsquad.co.uk/smilies.php

fivecheebs
11th December 2006, 14:27
^^ Thats pretty cool mate. I take it there is a script that reviews the content of the folder when the browser loads the page then it writes the html in accordance with the contents? (i know nothing about php btw, so this is a complete guess :lol:)

Does it automatically display all the images at full size too, or is it clever enough to fit a pic within the boundaries?

I checked through Gary's control panel and couldnt find anything to switch on or off the directory listing feature for any of the folders. Depending in what Gary wants to achieve, and the way your script works, it could be a good workaround for him.

Yip that does look cool, I like it muchly.

You got PM Chris.

fillip
11th December 2006, 16:07
Since it's a coded solution you can basically make it do whatever you want. I think it's about 4-5 lines of code and that's it.

Gary, If you want it to have additional functionality let me know and we'll see what we can come up with, as I say it's dead simple.

Apologies for my spelling in the previous post, I've just realised how awful it was. :o)

GodsUnicorn
11th December 2006, 16:11
I think Chris is going to have a look at it for me, so maybe once its sorted out you can walk me through it (very slowly, and don't let go of my hand)
Cheers mate.

I have been having a little play with all this webby stuff and found a nice little prog called 'note tab lite' http://www.fookes.com/products.php you lot will probably be familiar with it already, but it really helps a lot in making a legible web page.
So have a look and see what you think, but bare in mind, I've never done this kind of thing before and this took me about half an hour.....so don't laugh too much.
www.godsunicorn.co.uk
And here's a little test page www.godsunicorn.co.uk/test.html if you view the source it shows you how the effects are achieved by using different tabs.
Still pretty basic stuff, but I'm getting there.
