View Full Version : Question for Chemists - Propylene Glycol + Delrin

I would like to use dilluted RV/Marine antifreeze in my cooling loop but I'm concerned about the reaction between Propylene Glycol based fluids and acetate. I have a Maze4 GPU block with a Delrin top, and Delrin is made from acetal resins. I believe the pump housing on my Laing D5 is also made from Delrin. I like the idea of a non-toxic corrosion/micro-organism inhibitor with the added benefit of it being red :)

I'm hoping someone here can shed some intel on my question.

I think any antifreeze is propylene-glycol based, so there is really no way around it, as for the long term effects I haven't a clue - sorry.

Although I hear alot about people using Zerex Racing Coolant in thier system... its still red.

Some antifreeze is etholene glycol based, you can get it in various colors, red/orange/green etc. Long term effects on a system though, I too have no idea.

Ethylene glycol and propylene glycol are clear liquids used in antifreeze and deicing solutions. Exposure to large amounts of ethylene glycol can damage the kidneys, heart, and nervous system. Propylene glycol is generally regarded as safe for use in food.

Most newer anti-freeze products are propylene glycol as it is safer for us and the invironment.

However, neither should react with acetyl resins or Delrin AF (as produced by Quadrant Engineering is POLYOXYMETHYLENE, FORMALDEHYDE HOMOPOLYMER (POM) ACETAL HOMOPOLYMER PLUS POLYTETRAFLUOROETHYLENE (PTFE)).

Delrin below 230*C will be liquid, but not decompose (into formaldehyde).

It's fine; knock yourself out.

If you want to confirm, google for a chemical compatibility chart; they're a bit harder to find for Delrin, but they're out there.

Alright, thanks for the input guys.
I went ahead and mixed a 10/90 RV/Distilled and introduced it to my loop.
