Text

Bill Owen, 35, didn't realize his passion for cars and computers would turn a hobby into a career. For three years, Owen, of Minneapolis, has "modded" computer cases, individualizing them with unique designs, paint jobs and lighting for customers who want more than the standard shape and color.

Owen got the idea after friends got together to play computer games on a network, bringing their systems with them. Most computers were the same boring beige box, he said. "We thought of ways to bring out individuality in their cases," he said, " . . . to make them different from other computer systems."

Owen's business has thrived, largely because of the growing market of do-it-yourself computer makers. He now gets requests from all over the world.

Most of his clients are guys who are into cars, he said. He creates many hot rod cases with flames and custom lighting. But his latest masterpiece was a Desert Storm case for a man who wanted to honor friends who had gone to war. The case resembles a tank with desert camouflage and armor.

All of Owens' work is done in his shop in his house. His work is available online at http://www.mnpctech.com. Smaller projects take Owen a few weeks; elaborate projects can take up to six months, often incorporating fabric, paint "and anything your imagination can come up with."

He charges between $200 and $2,500, depending on the complexity of the case, and prides himself on automotive styling finish that he applies to every case.

"My life is absorbed with modding," he said.

Modded, or modified, computer cases are finding their way into the mainstream. Modding is growing both as a hobby and as an industry, says Ben Rising, owner of MountainMods.com, an online seller of modding parts (http://www.mountainmods.com). Retailers are increasingly stocking the modified cases.

Modders shun the ubiquitous boring beige tower that contains the hard drive and other guts of the computer. Instead, they cut windows in their boxes, install colorful cold-cathode fluorescent lights, attach glow-in-the-dark cables and customize other parts ranging from buttons to fans.

Alex Wiley, 23, a student at Portland Community College in Oregon and a computer hobbyist, goes far beyond typical modders. He builds his cases from scratch, using acrylic and super-bright, light-emitting diodes.

His home office is a veritable museum of sleek, glowing boxes: The blue box, with its chrome accents, resembles a safe. The black box, with aluminum flames streaming back along the sides, looks like a home theater projector. The green box's shape is the logo for Advanced Micro Devices, a California computer-chip maker.

Most impressive of all, Spider, with its acrylic legs spanning five feet, glows red when the "on" switch -- one of the spider's antennae -- is pushed.

"Alex is an extreme modder," says Matt Fishler, a 17-year-old high school senior from Beaverton, Ore., who runs TwistedMods.com, one of the Web's largest modding sites. "He's amazing."

Wiley's creations have appeared in national magazines, including Tech Edge, Maximum PC and PC Extreme.

"Everybody else has trophies from high school," says Wiley. "I've got magazines."

MountainMods.com's Rising modified his first computer case in the 1980s to add exhaust fans to keep his computer from overheating and crashing. It wasn't until the late 1990s that Rising began to notice modding being done strictly for form rather than function.

"My hobbies stuck more to function until eventually I got tired of staring at the beige midsize tower," Rising says. "I started painting devices and building cases from the ground up."

Fishler's computer sits inside a large aluminum cube called the U2-UFO, which is made by MountainMods.com. After finishing classes at noon each weekday, Fishler works until midnight using the computer to publish articles, sell advertising and moderate forums.

Fishler's Web site staff includes a senior editor in Portland, a guide writer in Seattle, a reviewer in Philadelphia and an interviewer in the United Kingdom.

"We'll pretty much do everything" related to electronics modding, Fishler says, noting that the site is about to publish a three-part series on modifying Xboxes.

Purists such as Wiley stick to do-it-yourself boxes from start to finish.

"To build one from the ground up," he says, "you know it's your creation."

Wiley is now building a mod for a friend. It will look like a vintage Marantz 2220B audio receiver. His next case for himself -- once he accumulates $1,000 for the project -- will be a replica of the front of a Ferrari Enzo, including the hood and two front wheels.

"Anything can be made," Wiley says. "It just depends on how much work you want to put into it."

I'd pretty much go with everything mrplow said. Def' take the iceQ, DFI and the lan boy. If i was going this far then i'd take the Ram and the HDD also.

Shame there isnt much else there really.

Wouldve been nice to have at least some kind of LCD in there, or at least sumthing other than standard PC parts (although there are some sweet bits of kit there) like a camera.

enjoy your goodies

Bill - funny you should mention but I do have some kit lined up for them, I've yet to discuss it with them as I've been sorting something with a well known UK modding/review site first but rest assured, I'm on the case for it. :)

BTW - On the off-topic bit - I got so drunk when I was 21, I forgot to grow up for the next 10 years or more.

Test run? Sheeit, BaDassII is alive and runnin' like a banshee on steroids.

Seriously, I've been workin' with her for a few days now and she's already made my work much easier and faster. An unexpected side benefit is how easy she is to work on. Everything's BAM, right there in front of you. Since the windows pop right out, swappin' cards is a piece of cake (even that huge Wilcat4 slides right out the front window B) ).

The hard drives simply fly... Raptors and the RAIDCore controller are a match made in heaven.

You can peek here to see her up and runnin' with the "lights on"... B)
http://www.modthebox.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB...082;start=45#45 (http://www.modthebox.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=mtblogs;action=display;num=107678108 2;start=45#45)

Runnin' all out at 100%, both Xeons are at 30 - 32C and she's hardly makin' any noise at all.

I've had rigs that were fun and kinda fast, but this one is simply the shiznits. I really should stop lookin' at her and get some work done. In the works is an article describing her, design, build and performance... I'll post y'all a link when it's up.

A little side note... she's networked with the original BaDass... 10 GHz of water-cooled duallie goodness that run six folding clients.

PC Enthusiast magazine is new; they have only had 2 or 3 issues. The current issue (October/November) will have my Sentinel Matrix mod featured in it. And R2-D2 has been already been secured for a future issue. Their magazine staff is comprised mostly of hardware pro's. They have expanded their modding section (because of my PM's) and are looking to have one Mod per issue highlighted. As of now they're are no prizes for getting to be highlighted except for having your Mod in print.

Go to their page in the top right corner. The new magazine section will be called "Cut-N-Case". Good luck.

You all have enuf skills to get yourself a modding column in that mag... Thats what PCE lacks, Monthly Columinists. Where the fuck is a Monthly Column dedicated to Modding?! If PCE wants a leg up on MaxPC and CPU.... Heres an opportunity for what is a very viable market.

Get your work and knowledge published monthly, not periodically in the back page..

Dude? Ripping ideas off and selling to manufacturers? Manufacturers have been doing that since the dawn of premods. Wonder why there are so many manufacturer suport personel people on forums? They hang around and pick up an idea or two. Its called market reaserch. Any manufacturer can asign someone to forum browse and rip crap off.

I think the pc mag is a very small fry. If they play their cards rite they could make it if not they are dead in the water just like every publication. To me it sounds like a family operation and nothing more.

Only thing I can say is that they have a very slim chance of making it.

Leeum's right. The pic used in the list is TGS' but the link take you to a page of a totally different mod - apart from the obvious difference in the shade of blue used you'll notice it also has no phase change cooling. And obviously the PC specs are completely different.

I doubt TGS was the first to have the idea to make an R2D2 themed computer and I know he isn't the last. There are alot of different ones from really simple to full blown movie replica style.

Magazines are realeased early due to uncertain distribution (slower to certain destinations) - this way, they'll ensure that everyone that it's supposed to reach on time gets it whilst it's the current issue.

You wouldn't want to buy last months magazine, would you? ^_^

On the subject of 'in the news': My WMD mod got picked up for Mod of the Month in UK mag PC Answers. Dunno when the issue is out, I'll have to get the guys in the UK to keep an eye out. WMD also got picked up by a news service, World Entertainment News Service in London, who "put together features for newspapers and magazines all over the world". Not sure what that means really.

I hear ya.

Supposedly there was articles about some of my cases by pubs in France, Spain, & Brazil that I have yet to receive copies of. I gave up bothering.

UK pubs have always been the best tho.

I will have a look for you today G-gnome :)Thanks Gordy :-) . I sent the pics off maybe 6 weeks back, so not sure what future publishings lead time is.

Bill - yeah, the foreign mags can be a mixed bag. I chased and chased an Italian mag for a copy but never got one, after I'd sent them HiRes pics and had it in writing to get 3 copies posted to me; real b******ds to deal with once they got the pics ('PC Fun' if anyone wants to steer well clear of them). Second time I've been burned by an Italian mag (first one was a photoshoot I did years ago and the mag folded after I'd done the job owing me about $1000 :o ). Most professional mag I've dealt with was CPU in USA.

Mods do seem to make nice eye-candy and 'ooh aah' for print publications. I guess if you're a pro-modder, besides the free advertising, the pages also look nice in your portfolio.:dremel:

I could never gauge how many sales stemmed from print media. I never hear "I'm buying this stuff cause I saw your rig on the cover of" Having your work featured in publications helps justify what you must charge though. And yes, a portfolio can help, esp in fielding sponserships.

I have no idea how many real modders even read CPU. Their special issue, PC Modder appears to have been temporarily paused. My guess would be weak sales.

No worries, had a flick through the only copy in the shop (Septembers issue) and the only mod in there was the car alloy wheel epia thing that was on bit a few months back, no sign of yours in there.

I'd imagine it will be in the october issue.

I will keep an eye out for you though.

I have no idea how many real modders even read CPU.You can't get it here, but I had it for a year with the sub they gave me and thought it was a pretty good magazine. I'd still be reading it if it was available here.:-)

Very well spoke, bro!

As for readers of CPU, I am an avid reader... tip to tail (over a week or so) as I get new issues. Just got my last issue with the Falcon NW rig for $9k!!! (cripes..)

Magazine publishing and wins are good resume' material that can mean the difference between talking about a mod, and actually building it for them. They see your past work, and they see rigs that have been published, they are much more apt to trust you in your design and implementation skills.

FHM Magazine in Spain wants to run WMD in their next issue. Talk about cross-over into mainstream media.:o

I'll ask for them to send me a copy. Failing that, anyone able to get Spanish FHM?^_^

Is there going to be a good looking model with the case?

like MaxIT? hehe ^

Hey, OT: I received the Oct issue of CPU today and theres no Mad Reader Mod on the cover... its a Falcon NW PC (http://www.computerpoweruser.com/editorial/mTOC.asp?guid=D0F818678A364ED2BE866FF949B0D1D2&IType=Computer%20Power%20User&vol=6&iss=10&ItypeID=9)

I hope they haven't decided to stop featuring Modder creations on their cover :-(

G-gnome

^ It would be a great shame if they stopped. Not many magazines around that'll actually give a full cover to a case mod.

Is there going to be a good looking model with the case? That'd be something now, wouldn't it.:-p

'scuse me while I go and build an auto pc so I can drape naked chicks over the 'hood'...(one way to get your worklog linked I guess - remember the bit-tech graphics-card-in-the-cleavage pics a couple of years back?)

Got some big news for ya and i´m really happy and enjoying it.

In Germany a new magazine for online gamers will be released by one of the major publishers. it´s called egames .. i know one of the editors from a former TV show called Giga on NBC and he asked me if i could do a monthly modding special in this new magazine.

Two weeks ago i talked to the chief editor and he agreed.

So .. i´ll post pics as soon as the first article is ready.

The first part will be cutting windows and and other fancy stuff in a case. Will work on a Coolermaster Wavemaster in black.

All topics will be quite basic at the start, but i´ll try my best giving it a bit of a pro touch.

Yesterday I received an email from Maximum PC saying that my SuperBee PC will be in the next issue! This is the second time I made it in their magazine. The first was with my Hard Drive PC back in Dec 2006.
