View Full Version : A strange pump question

Ok, some help and advice guys!

As part of my project Valhalla, while choosing where to locate the pump (so much space to choose from, lol) I came to the conclusion that I'd really like to suspend it from the lower half of the drive rack.

Only (possible flaw in this plan is, it would need to be upside down (i.e. top pump output down) or sideways (pump output horizontal).

Now, the leaflet that came with my Eheim 1048 tells me that the output should be upward. My question is a) 'Why?' and b) 'What technical difference does that make in a closed loop system that has had all the air bled?'

Answers and theories both happily accepted.

As far as I'm aware, it's mainly due to being able to clear air build-up.
If you can completely bleed the system (perhaps with the pump in the correct orientation) and ensure that no further air will enter the pump during use, you shouldn't have a problem [/theory ;) ]
The potential bugbear being the bubbles that escaped your notice...

(I run the pump in HexaDragon sideways fwiw.)

Yeah, it'd be no problem to bleed upright, then mount (upside down :h34r: -style).

Actually, that helps ^_^ If it works for someone else, it'll probably work OK for me.

Fingers crossed.

Cheers Pug.

No probs mate, glad to help. B)

If you have a choice, I'd recommend sideways.
Even if I did get air in mine, I only tend to have to tip the case 45° to clear it (and my res is set up so that even at that angle, the outlet stays submerged).

It is my belief that with pumps that have thier output located tangentially (sp?) on the "circle" around the impellar can be mounted any way you like. I could be wrong... <_<

most pumps can be mounted in any manner; but as Pug stated, clearing the air - and keeping it clear - may be difficult

the trapped air will cause the pump to be noisy, when it is the pump's installation that is actually at fault

How are you going to suspend it? String or large rubber bands? I'd feel more secure with rubber bands as they have a wider surface area.

That's a great idea by the way. I'm definitely going to do that.

Mine is also sideways mounted, though I keep it upright during the filling/air bleeding process.
