What's next? Banning the little light in the refrigerator?

actually all standby shit consume enourmous ammounts of energy... a tv takes around 5W or more and so on...

I think they've twisted the original story, if you read the quote you'll see that it's primarily aimed at TVs, videos and the like.

Like AWACS says, leaving a TV on standby overnight because it's easier to press a button on a remote than get up and switch the set off is a huge drain on energy resources when you think about it.

Just tot up all the kit in your average teenager's bedroom - :w00t: I'll be rich! ^_^

I think its a great idea. If all countries did it we would save huge amounts of energy. If everyone in the UK swapped over to energy saving light bulbs the UK would meet its Kyoto commitments with ease. My sister works for WWF and is an enviromental fundementalist so i hear about this all the time.

She's a wrestler??:D

I turn most of my stuff off at night anyway. Rarely, if at all, use standby on anything.

That's the most annoying thing, If the Uk govt. just made it illegal to produce/sell light bulbs that aren't energy efficient we'd see a huge change in power consumption and carbon emissions following on from that. But no, we have to avoid the most obvious things first. :duh:

Not that I'm against this idea, I support it fully. :thumb:

I can't see why its so hard to make an off button on the remote and using a solenoid to press the switch off and then if you want to turn it on you just have to do it before you sit down (if it was a tv for example).

Those energy effecient light bulbs are very good and i think one thing that puts people off them is the time it takes to reach full brightness although it is a nice thing to have in the bathroom in the night, very gentle on your eyes whereas the average lightbulb leaves you squinting half the time you're in there

They should send out some more of them packs through the post where you could get them stupidly cheap compared to in the shops.

Quite. There is a remote available for htpc's that comes with a pci card. It has a power on/off switch that really does turn your comp' on or off rather than just sending it to standby as so many do.

If i had £1 for every person who came into the tent at T in the Park to say that i would be posting this from a island in the sun somewhere. (Not the UK :-p )

btw the wrestling is WWE.

but what if you have something like tivo or media center that needs to be on, or at least in standby, to do some timed task? wouldn't it take a lot more energy to leave it completely on rather than leaving it in standby?

edit: oh, that's what the article says :duh:

the real original wrestling is WWF, the World Wrestling Federation; or at least the big timers like Hulk and Andre the Giant and Macho Man and Rick Flair and all those cats started there. they even used to have a cartoon. then came WCW, then WWF had a lawsuit against them from those hippies at the wildlife thing  and had to change to WWE. there was some stuff before WWF even, with WWWF (World Wide Wrestling Federation) and some before that. but the WWF was the first big time.

Well there are certain things that need to have some kind of standby but switching everything off that doesn't have to be on standby will more than make up for it. The main thing that stops me is that its a lot easier to press a button on a remote, especially at night when the other option means getting out of bed to do it.

Actually the World Wildlife Fund had the trademark since the 1960's so the wrestlers had been asked nicely several times to stop infringing on their trademark before they got sued.

:nods: Was about to say that myself, but thought you may have done so already. ^_^

Didn't know some of you were wrestling fans?!

Although you could be avid conservationists.....
