Plain and simple. It crashes, tonight has been the worst yet. It crashes at random times. I have gone anywhere from five to 20 minutes between crashes.
I thought I would ask in here and see if I can get some help before I sat on hold and fought with 30 different people at Time Warner.

Probably overheating. I had the same problem with a router and modem.
Also some modems dont do too well when they are on 24/7. I had a modem back in the early days (direct tv dsl) and it used to fill its cache and never empty it effectively. I had to restart it every day or so under heavy download cycles. What I ended up doing was puting a timer on the ac adapter that would turn the modem off for 5min @ 3am every nite and start it again.
My sugestion would be place it in a cool place then turn it off for a lil while and then turn it on. It should be ok again.
My money is on a overheating chip.

I would also check to see if there are any firmware updates available too.

Mine is up to date, I don't think its overheating... sits on the edge of my desk in the open and its prety cool to the touch. But the cache problem might be it.

That is what I have too. A motorola surfboard 4200.
I found an update for my modem. Hopefully that works.
What makes me mad is that I haven't been on for more than 10 minutes and it's already crapped out twice.
Turns out the update I found is for usb. So far I haven't had any luck finding anything other than usb drivers.

Just had the cable guy out today and found out the problem. For some reason the cable line was getting a little too much power and kicking the modem off/on. He traced it back to the main box on the other side of the property and did some tinkering. Problem solved, its been running for about 8hrs without a hickup. SO awsome, and it seems to be running a little faster as well.

I pay for the replacement with comcast in colorado like a few bucks extra each month. But I get a new modem at least once a year. even if it doesn't need it I still take it in and get a new one. I noticed that after a year or so of having them on 24x7 they tend to drop connection fairly often. I have it on my calendar to just take it in every 8-10 months and have them give me a new one.

Well we've only had it maybe 6 months... and it started doing it sometime over the past month, I turn it off at night after everyone goes to bed. and turn it back on when I wake up in the morning... so being on all the time wasn't the problem, now that its fixed though, I'm pleased.
But the best part was the guy that came and did it, never seen a PC with a window and lights. He was estatic! *OMG! Thats awsome! How'd you do it!?*

I get that from people when I pull my Dell laptop out. They want to know where to get a colored laptop.
