Couldn't resist skipping ahead of my progress after mounting Aluminum Evercool fans today. Chrome/Orange combo really looked tasty.

2, 120mm AOC Evercool intake fans
Keep in mind Chieftec Dragons normally hold 2, 80mm fans frnt/rear.

mnpctech , that thing looks awsome , the color combination , the chrome fans , but just one thing are those two 120 mm fans centerd in the middle of the front bezel?
Starbuck3733T

I agree about the non-centered fans. However, if they have filters or the mesh has filter media behind it, it wont matter. Looks great so far, and I love color combo too!

I am back from hiatus or whatever you wanna call it.
Anyways holy crap that is awesome. Would you mind if I ask a few questions? First how did you get the mesh to stay? My second and final question im trying to get rid of the plain boring front grill style so would you mind if I used that same sort of grill style on my bezel? I was thinking of doing the dual 120's like you have but I was gonna paint the mesh so it all flowed together.
How did you get that so glossy?

Then that explains the why why why why why... Kyra is 4 and she's STILL in that mode.
When she asks something that I can give a good, educated, scientific explanation on - I do. sometimes it confuses her, but most of the time she just walks away giggling.
My point is that there's no scientific explanation for all those whys, especially those relating to modding :)

Bill, I've got yet another half-composed mail lying here that wonders if you'd like my silver bezel for this project?
You'll hafta paint it yourself to match the black, sorry but as I said to you before, I want to do one that doesn't have the "chin" at the bottom (and it wouldn't be much more work to do the whole thing again than it would to mod the one I have).
It is the same chassis, isn't it?
The top door on mine is knackered from the ModFest incident (and I'm still waiting for that to be sorted) but I see you have the door sorted (if you can get it back... looks like she doesn't wanta give it up! :D).
Lmk anyway. :)

It fits just fine too - two of the mounting pegs line up exactly and the third is only a dremel notch away.
If I can get a replacement std one to mod, the bezel's yours bud.
As for the Eagle... I put it there to whet your interest in the bezel but I reckon I could part with it for a project like this if need be...
Hmm, speaking of which, do you have a handle sorted for this one yet? I still have that one with the micro-switched Harley brake lever...
and the finish on the front bezel is spectacular!
Yah, I kinda wish he hadn't painted it yet... (or that I'd offered my bezel sooner) :o

Everybodies tatses are different and they change over the years so i'm sure i'll learn to love the 2 wheeled arm chairs one day. :) Heh, it was all the unneccessary Harley accoutrements that gave rise to early modding/customising of 'em. Heres some steps I haven't had time to post.
You can't have a HD theme case w/o the V-Twin! I found this nifty tow hitch at a motorcycle swap meet..
I outlined where I wanted the motor to protrude from the door and used my Dremel for the cuts.
You can barely make out the engraved words "V-Twin" in the oval filter cover. I later filled that in with JB-Weld and sanded that w/ 400 grit. I wanna paint something cool there like a skull. flames or accenting orange/silver design.
mnpctech
21st September 2004, 13:30
Cut is finished.
How did I attach it?
Actually the cut was dead on so our motor fit nice and snug. Not good enuf! I don't want it to ever move. Grabbing my JB-Weld, I applied it on backside of bezel between the joint. 24hrs later it was rock solid.
I filled Chieftec's ugly oval groove in the door as well.
Then I painted the backside w/ Krylon Gloss Black to hide the greyish JB-Weld. It looks more like our mod was factory molded in.
mnpctech
21st September 2004, 13:34
I prepped the bezel surface for paint by sanding it w/ 500 grit, then applying Plastikote Flexible primer for plastic.
Where has that ugly groove gone?
mnpctech
21st September 2004, 13:37
I really want the paint to shine on this baby. I sanded the Primer w/ 800 grit paper so it was smooth as a baby bottom.
mnpctech
21st September 2004, 13:43
This pic looks like Black primer.
Its our first coat of paint. Its Krylon Black Gloss enamel paint. It looks like this after you've wetsanded w/ 800 grit paper.
You can see here I also filled in the motor's air cleaner so it no longer said "V-Twin" (duh)
mnpctech
21st September 2004, 13:45
another angle... Again, notice our groove is gone
mnpctech
21st September 2004, 13:50
After 3 more coats of Krylon Gloss Black, I removed the tape and go back wetsanding. I'll go from 800, 1200, 1500, and finally 2000 grit before buffing the finish. Before I buff, I've got more things I wanna do.
mnpctech
21st September 2004, 13:53
I gotta have my Flames! Making a template from paper
mnpctech
21st September 2004, 13:58
I cut these from a sheet of stainless steel w/ tin snips so the flames would curl. then finished off any jagged edges w/ Dremel drum sander attachment.
mnpctech
21st September 2004, 14:02
A little flame accent would be cool for the LEDs and Lock as well. On the right is another template I sketeched for the cut-out

PPG DX503 is an Aluminum Conditioner (Alodine).
Alodining is the chemical application of a protective chromate conversion coating on aluminum. It can be used as substitute for primer, paint will stick to it and it provides protection against corrosion. Guess what else? No sanding.
Maybe some of you have considered painting your Aqua Computer parts at sometime? (heaven forbid, but why be normal)
In an ideal enviroment, you should submerge the part in a chemical tank, but most of us don't have one of those handy (guessing) So instead I'm wearing heavy duty rubber gloves and applying the alodine to my part with a rag.
Don't touch this stuff! It can cause irreversible blindness if its gets in your eyes!
WEAR GOGGLES AND GLOVES
mnpctech
22nd September 2004, 13:44
Just making a point again here...
mnpctech
22nd September 2004, 13:45

Let it sit for 5 mins....
It will develope a Yellowish tint....

DX503 is prep before color coating, it turns alum surface into yucky Yellow tint... However DX501 is a clear for surfaces such as bare alum :)

Ok I got two questions for ya Bill since I am going to try and do this to my chieftec but do the mesh between the plexi for the door.
Ok first question what grit sandpaper did you use and can I do it by hand even though it will take longer?
http://prudhoe.codeword.com/mnpctech/HD100/Intake/Intake/FF.grill5wb.jpg
Second and final question. What did you use to hold the mesh in place? JB Weld or hot glue? Thanks alot.

Just ran out of Round hole mesh 2 days ago.. If you ordered before Wed, youre good. If not, order the Honeycomb sheets you need and mention in Paypal notes that your biggiy w/ your email addy and I toss one of my own scrap sheets of Round in box.
Round version of MM should back in stock within 2 weeks.

As biggiy stated, this type of perforated steel (22 gauge 5/32 staggered hole) is only found in large sheets (9' x 3') from steel distributors. I pickup these large FLAT sheets w/ my van from MN distrib and shear them down for resell.
You can however, find mesh pieces used as gutter guards @ Home Depot. It doesn't look as elegant and cool as perf steel though :D

Yes. for example, the first HD logo panel shot I did earlier, I borrowed black theater drapes from a professional photographer. I attached them to ceiling shrouded around the case. Otherwise everything in the room would be reflected back and deter from the mural. A bitch to setup shot, but whos complaining. :D

Wow, that's some seriously impressive paint work. I tried wetsanding a couple weeks ago, seemed to work alright, but I cant seem to get the orangepeel out before it starts showing primer. Just need some more coats, I suppose. I think with a bit of practice I can get it. I bought some 3M rubbing compound...not Perfect It 3, but similar I think. One question, can this type of compound be used with a power buffer? That would make my life a bit easier. ^_^
I also saw you mention that you use Krylon...same stuff I picked up for my rig, except I'm using Gloss Banner Red and Gloss White.
I also recall you mentioning a clearcoat product called Defthane, or Deft or something like that. I looked around and was only able to find it in one hardware store, but it was $8 for a rattle can of it. My question is, is this stuff worth it? How well/ how easily does it buff out, and how durable is the finish?

I tried wetsanding a couple weeks ago, seemed to work alright, but I cant seem to get the orangepeel out before it starts showing primer.
Ive gone through my side panel 3 times now. I "thought" i had a good thick coat(of clear) on every time....part of learning how to paint i suppose.
Make sure the panel is perfectly flat before moving onto the finish paint.

I tried wetsanding a couple weeks ago, seemed to work alright, but I cant seem to get the orangepeel out before it starts showing primer.
The trick is to make sure the primer is perfectly flat before putting on the final coats. If the primer has orangepeel then you are finished before you start. You CAN get away with adding loads of coats of color but its not only bad practice but time consuming and expensive. (it will take lots and lots of coats)
As for How durable the finish is ...... Well after the clear coat is fully dry (about a month) it will be at leat as hard and durable ass any automotive finish..
mnpctech
23rd November 2004, 13:55
I cant seem to get the orangepeel out before it starts showing primer. Just need some more coats, I suppose. I think with a bit of practice I can get it.
Avoiding da peel.
1) Listen to Knipex, good clean and flat primered base coat. Wipe primered surface with Professional Tack Cloth before applying paint.
2) Apply lighter coats and wait longer between application intervals. Try 10 minutes dry time between coats.
Heat up can in bucket of hot tap water for 10 mins, then Mist the paint onto surface.. Hold can father away from surface, try 12"
Allow paint to cure @ least one week before wetsanding. Or even longer if its enamel which has longer cure time. 1.5 - 2 weeks
I bought some 3M rubbing compound...not Perfect It 3, but similar I think. One question, can this type of compound be used with a power buffer?
Yes.
I also saw you mention that you use Krylon...same stuff I picked up for my rig, except I'm using Gloss Banner Red and Gloss White.
Krylon paints found in retail stores are typically Enamel. They produce a higher luster shine and more durable than Laquer aerosol paints, but Enamels are tempermental as you've experienced. Take longer to wetsand and youre more liable to notice sratchs if you don't constantly clean the sandpaper. As a paint newb, start out with Plastikote or Duplicolor laquer paints.
I also recall you mentioning a clearcoat product called Defthane, or Deft or something like that. I looked around and was only able to find it in one hardware store, but it was $8 for a rattle can of it. My question is, is this stuff worth it? Its the best consumer retail clearcoat I've used yet. You must wetsand it like paint before buffing out. Takes half the time to wetsand versus enamel paint. Apply 3 - 4 coats. More durable than leaving just a paint coat. If you wan't durable, go with powdercoating instead ;)

Speaking of orange peel.
AS some of you know I work for a company that sells and services equipment for metal finishing primarily aerospace and medical implants.
We do however work with other industries including automotive, (I also have a strong interest in automotive particulary body repair finishing), woodworking and others.
One of our customers has a big problem with orange peel and currently have guys doing much like what we do to repair parts. For larger volume parts they have robotic stations to sand and high gloss buff the parts but for low volume work they cannot justify the cost and asked us to have a look at what was out there.
I found a company supplying an orange peel removal kit. Comprises of 2 air sanders. 1200 grit dry pad, 1500 gritt dry pad, 2000 grit sponge back wet pad, and a 4000 grit wet sponge back pad. Then they have 2 buffing pads and compound. I got in a kit to do some tests..... and the results are    .
Absolutely amazing. I have seen and used the 2000grit and 4000grit pads before and found them OK but with this air sander they are amazing. You can now buff up a shine in seconds.....

Cheers Defyant! Welcome to WizD
I plan to have this finished by mid feb. My stepfather has expressed a lot of interest in the case and has been wanting to replace his old pc. I don't know when I'd ever build a system for it. So this way it stays in the family and I can help him decide on a nice system.
To do list!
1)Finish front bezel
Add flames and detail V-Twin engine. I've been holding out for a nice HD 100th anniversary pin to set in the airfilter as a scale size badge
2) Install orange acrylic sheet in floor of chassis.
Should arrive this week. I may not even care for it until I see it first
3) Finish window.
Well, it won't exactly be a window anymore. I'm going to fill in each individual hole in the eagle cut out with matching aluminum pieces 1/8" smaller in size. They will be mounted on either an aluminum or clear acrylic. The intent is illuminate the edges of these pieces around the perimeter of the window. I like things that invite the viewer to touch it. I think the eagle design would be really cool to run your hand over. Especially illuminated
4) I wanna do something unique with the 1.5" space beneath bottom of case and floor created by the LL castors. I was thinking of cutting some flames in stock aluminum and mount them so it looks likes flames coming from behind the front castors. Interesting idea in theory, but maybe not so in reality.
5) I've been thinking of maybe having Lin do some airbrush artwork inside the chassis as well. Maybe flames... dunno, fleating thought
6) Still need to sort out 2, 92mm grills for exhaust fans. Originally talked to Bonzai about crafting me some V-TWIN style fan grills. I've got enuf confidence now that I could try making them myself from modeling clay. Or just make black Honeycomb grills.

Awesome, will the acrylic pieces fit flush and be sitting on an aluminum backer, or will they stick out. This is a very, very cool idea!

The protruding pieces will be hand polished aluminum and 1/8' smaller diameter than their coordinating holes (eagle cutout). I'll mount them on 10" x 10" (est) sheet of alum, rasied about 1/4" off back side of panel and illuminate the entire border of window. More of an illuminated panel design, not window.
I just got an another idea for the orange acrylic this morning. Its actually clear acrylic with flourescent amber. Make a HD logo panel window for the top section of the chassis ^_^

If you put a matching sized piece of plexi on the backside hand-polished aluminium pieces and lit that by drilling through the aluminum baseplate, that would look quite hot too. It'd also be more even than just lighting the edges of the window, which may not give uniform lighting distribution since the backer is square and the design is not.

Thanks Gordy B)
Star, youre correct. I initially planned to cover the bed of the chassis w/ acrylic and dremel out a recessed portion for the "D" and thought about illuminating that.., but I'm going to concentrate my efforts on the panel design instead. I'd like to get the project done w/ system installed within 1 month.
On another note, I still do plan to show how to execute the HD cage mod w/ 2, 120 x 38mm fans. I've been scanning through my photos on/off over weekend. Theres some crucial steps I can't find :(
The basic idea..
Before (2, 80mm intake fans)

After

I think I can scrap together what I can find for the tutorial. Its just not going to be as clearly laid out as I originally intended it..

These photos reveal how the cages are supported
In it's stock state, the Dragon's 2, HD cages slid into 2 shelfs attached to the front of chassis.
http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/images/pics/C120b.jpg
http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/images/pics/C120c.jpg
In order to clear the 38mm thick fans I had to set back the HD cages. Notice that I've attached one of the shelfs beneath the upper cage.
http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/images/pics/HD120fin2.jpg
The trick is that you have drill out and replace the 2 steel tabs (beneath lower 5.25 and also upper HD cage) with machine screws. Now the HD cage locks have something to clasp onto.. follow? :)
steel tab (originally intended to guide upper cage)
http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/images/pics/HD120fin4a.jpg
replaced with 8/32 machine screw
http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/images/pics/HD120fin4.jpg
On top of lower HD cage
http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/images/pics/HD120fin6.jpg
http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/images/pics/HD120fin5.jpg
Presto! The cages are still removable :)
http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/images/pics/HD120fin3.jpg
Now you got "big gun" 120 x 38mm Panaflos in your Dragon
Fans are offset because they're positioned directly in front of HD cages.

Thats really really clever. So do i understand that the levers actually grip the machine screws holding the cages up?

Nice! What we talked about so many nights ago on the phone finally comes to fruition (or, you documented it at least )
Yea, finally :)
What held it up..
My intent was to devise this mod for people w/o welding equip/skills.
I originally used JB Weld to attach 1/8" washer to the steel tabs. The top washer held up for 3 cage removals until it weakened and popped off. Then I decided I'd try silver soldering the washers onto the tabs w/ propane torch. The washer couldn't hold up to enuf heat to really get a nice solder... Then I finally succumbed to drilling out the tabs. During all of this was the expected arrival of my son and my wife being placed on bed rest for 3 mons.. So you can understand while the mod got shelved for so long. So all of the photos have the JB weld version. I just need to sort a different photo sequence.
So do i understand that the levers actually grip the machine screws holding the cages up?
Yes.
You will discover that you need to bend down the floor of the lower 5.25 cage because the HD cages will be a little crooked (lean downward) You can bend it by applying pressure with your hand inside the lower 5.25 while standing in front of the chassis. I didn't take a photo of this because it was more of a look asthenic thing for me.

Nice guide there mate B) Ive used similar techniques before to make a string of LEDs. Cant wait for part 2 your doing this to me on purpose arent you :p
Only one question. Is there a reason you chose to run the LEDs from a 12v supply over 5V? Ive always found that larger resistors get quite hot when not wiring up several LEDs in paralell with one smaller resistor (i guess because the larger one is working harder to reduce the current more). I wonder what star's take on this is too.
Starbuck3733T
24th March 2005, 02:07
don't run LEDs in parallel on the same current limiting resistor, you're in for a case of thermal runaway. as far as why they get hot, you're pulling more current through them and current in a series circuit is all the same. so you've got a parallel combination of LEDs but a single current limiting resistor in series with the parallel combination, its current is the same as the current for all the LEDs combined. Other than the afforementioned fact that it's a no-no to do that, you'd want a resistor with a higher power rating. mnpctech's in this guide are 1/4 watt, 1/2 watt is common. Show me a circuit and i'll explain further :)
IAAEE (I _AM_ An Electronic Engineer)! (who sucks at analog on occaison)
zer0
24th March 2005, 02:22
but if you run all those leds in series and one burns out (might take a wile but it will happen) then all of them will turn off thus you have to run though and test them all (im shure you know this senario from christmasstree lights.)
my bigg question is why did you deside to use a plug like that as thos plug in to your motherboard and if the motherboad thinks that fan isnt needed (motherboard will think its a fan) then it will dim or turn off your lights...
Starbuck3733T
24th March 2005, 03:03
don't run in series either, 1 resistor per LED, period. that in my educated opinion is the right way. which is exactly what bill is doing, a parallel combination of series circuits (1 resistor + 1 LED). A less confusing way of saying it (not looking at the overall) is that he's just running a bunch of LEDs with their own resistors.
I think this is all blah blah blah blah
zer0
24th March 2005, 04:01
oh ic also couldent you put some sort of heatsink on the resister if you had all those leds running off of it?
fivecheebs
24th March 2005, 10:40
Im sorry, my post wasnt clear. I have only run 2 kinds of led circuits from 12v. one where each has its own resistor, one where 2 or 3 share a resistor (i now see the problem with this). I have also made 5v led circuits where each led has its own resistor. What i was trying to say in my last post was ... I have found that the resistors on the 12v circuit run noticeably hotter than thier smaller bretheren on a 5v circuit when each LED has its own resistor.
Sorry for the slightly OT Bill

if you had enough LEDs that you were drawing that much current, just get a higher wattage-rated resistor. You shouldn't be in that situation, save for a Luxeon Star.
