My friend is having problems with her msn. I can't go look at it since she is out of state.

She is using a laptop with a built in netgear wireless card. Her sister's msn is working just fine but she get's this when she tries to get on.

Click (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v260/biggiy05/ports.jpg)

She also showed me this. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v260/biggiy05/problem2.jpg)

Anyone got any ideas? I have no idea how to fix this.

Has she got a software firewall running blocking the ports?

If she's running 7.5 that shouldn't be a problem as I've seen it tunnel out on port 80 if everything else is blocked - makes it hard to block on our network .

Based on the second pic, it appears to be trying to go out over the wired ethernet connection instead of the wireless.
Haven't run messenger in so long, I couldn't tell you where this setting is but hopefully it'll give someone else an inkling...

I'm guessing Messenger -> Tools -> Options -> Connection/Proxy Settings or something similar.

She turned off norton and the windows firewall and tried but with no luck. She is running 7.5.

I couldn't find the proxy settings in the connection menu. It's got advanced options but thast's it.

Does it show if she right clicks the messenger icon (like I say, I'm rusty with it)?

:duh:I was looking right at it too. So should I have her test it and see what it says or?

Msn and I don't get along but I use it to talk to a few people. Very little knowledge on it if you haven't noticed.

Where is she connecting to the internet? Is it a public hotspot? If so they may block IM traffic....

Is her home considered a public hotspot? Lol it's with her place. I am 60% sure she is on dial up but they might have upgraded to DSL or broadband.

This is why I can't for her to move in because we won't have these kind of problems that last forever.

Ok then, you could try disableing the wired NIC to try and force it out over the WI-fi.... But I'm not convinced that this is your problem.

What sort of wireless access point is it? and when her sister connects ok is that on the same box or a different pc?

I'll have to get with her about disabling the wired NIC.

I'll have to ask about the access point. She is in another state atm and not that great with computers and terms. To put it simple. She is just like the other many girls in the world and knows how to talk to her girlfriends and find expensive things that they want to buy.

The router is a netgear wgr614

It's gotta be something with her card if nobody else is having problems with their service.

The router is a netgear wgr614

It's gotta be something with her card if nobody else is having problems with their service.

A NIC card just translates info from the router - would say that the system has a firewall, spyware, or the IP is fixed rather than 'Assigned by DHCP' in the connection status window > support.

If the latter is true, then it is possible to change this in the TCP/IP properties of the connection.

Could be corrupt wlan drivers.... an uninstall and reinstall of the nic drivers is probably worth a shout.:wiz:

A NIC card just translates info from the router

Well it's a little bit more complex than that, and based on the other info we've got so far it would seem likely to be a problem with the TCP/IP stack.

Just in case, found this on web...

Windows Messenger - voice (computer to phone) UDP 2001-2120, 6801, 6901

MSN Messenger - file transfers TCP 6891-6900

MSN Messenger - voice communications (computer to computer) TCP 6901 UDP 6901

http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~rakerman/port-table.html#WinMess

furious trout
9th June 2006, 23:52
Yeah it does use a huge range of UDP ports for it's file transfers and voice transmission, but port 1863 is the usual port for MSN, but as I said before if this is blocked it will use Port 80 which isn't usually blocked. That's why I reckon there's a problem either with the NIC drivers or the windows Tcp/Ip stack

This is going to be the fun part. I love my girl to death but trying to get her to download something is going to be a trip. She freaked out when I had her turn the anti virus software off for a minute. "BUT I DON'T WANT A VIRUS!"

No luck with the Fix tool. Going to try the lspfix once she gets done with her softball tournament.

As for the software, she doesn't have it. They didn't send the software for the card with the laptop. She is using a toshiba but I forgot to ask where she got it. It's 3am over here and I am tired but I can go to the netgear site and get the files if I find out what type of card she has can't I?

She showed me this today.

I am getting frustrated and running out of ideas for this. All I can gather from it is that it's something with the wired part of the connection but she doesn't have any wires going to the laptop.

i know im not too good with computers but. maybe if the lady in question trys a network cable, this way problems can be ruled out with the ip/proxy settings. the cable link if it does work will show the fault too lay with the onboard wireless unit. if messenger logs in with a cable attached then it means you can attack the problem head on with new wireless drivers etc etc

We're not on about changing the proxy settings - they just happen to be in the same place as the connection settings, which is where I want her to see if she has it set to use the wired network adaptor. :thumb:

There's no option that i can see in there that will force the connection to use the wired card.

But it would probably be worth turning on connection logging :thumb:

If you can't uninstall Norton then head over here (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=&seg=) for the Symantec tool that will remove any Norton product.

It says it all that they actually make a tool to remove their product when the install gets b0rked beyond repair!

9 out of 10 times it gets b0rked due to user intervention - either Spyware or Viruses from dodgey downloads or websites.

Norton make the tool so you can remove to reinstall their software.

SymNRT (Previously RNAV/RNIS) is the tool you talk of I presume?
