Although I don't use it very often, when I start MSN Messenger it takes an age to load and slows my connection speed way down, for example with MSN running it took 45 seconds to load Google home page, without it the same page loads in a fraction of a second.

Whats up with it ?

MSN does that from time to time. I've finally found my old account details. It's taken a day to bring up the connection.

I now remember how flaky messenger used to be for me. I'm on 56k and really notice it. I only ever turned it on when I needed it. For a resource light client use something like Trillian (http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/). All the same functions and you can connect to other IM chat networks.

It's also wise to check you haven't got any unwelcome visitors. A slow connect can be an indicator. If you have run all the anti spyware stuff and nothing shows TCPView (http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/tcpview.shtml) might show where some connections are.

Anything you're not sure about, investigate. Don't post any results here as it can possibly expose you.

i don't use MSN Messenger because of all the bloated crap that comes with it... but if you got XP it should have come with Windows Messenger, same thing but without all the ads and sheit. If not see if Windows Messenger is running stealth and causing crosstalk issues.

I was a Trilly Pro user for years, but I wouldn't have called it resource-light, not on Win2k anyway. After upgrading from 98se, whenever I used it for more than a hour I had something crash on me, beit Trilly, my broadband connection, or Windows itself and CPU and ram usage would go through the roof. Friends of mine who used it with Win2k also had similar problems.
