Not sure how long these have been out but they look pretty impressive as far as external, backup storage goes, especially the Premium Edition

My Book Premium Edition (http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=318877) (400GB and 500GB models)

My Book Essential Edition (http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=318909) (comes in 160Gb, 250GB, 320GB, 400GB and 500GB )

They look bloody cool aswell.

They're a bit pricey. I'd be tempted to mod one of these (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=48213&TabID=1&C=SEO&U=strat15&doy=search) up to give the same effect for a lot less.

Ermmm a 500GB WD internal HDD is £175 on it's own, so I think these are damn reasonable considering.

If its an external enclosure it would have to be an Icy Box for me. The only brand i have used which has worked on every computer it has been plugged into.

I concede that. I had my cynic head on at the time, and was also thinking about the inevitable drop to floor at some point too.

@ DRB. I have an IcyBox enclosure too, and it's worked fine on any XP system I've tried it on - never tried it on anything else.

It's just not as cool as these however, and it doesn't have any 'smart' auto-backup software and requires manually turning on and off.

It does look pretty cool, but I still think I would rather have a normal HDD in an IcyBox. Is it me or is it quite large for what's in it. :h34r:

I wouldn't trust anything without a fan, me and my roommate had some of those and they cooked the harddrives in no time at all

I quite like the Vantec Nexstar enclosure which also sells under a few different brand names. Solid aluminium with no fan and it keeps the drive very cool, seems to work with all my machines even the pickier NF2 chipsets (I've seen those right royally bugger up some USB2 hard disks). You can pick these up pretty cheap if you shop around.

I just bought a portable networkable enclosure with embedded FTP and Samba, which is quite nice but of course it's only formattable FAT32 and I forgot that this has a 4.2GB~ish filesize limit. Doh! Still it's quite an impressive bit of kit.
