I feel slightly silly asking this question, but I am genuinely confused.
I've got the application of thermal paste pretty sussed on the few AMD processors I've used, and the ATi core.

But having never used a P4, the concept of heatspreaders confuses me a little, as the new AMD Athlon 64s have got one, and I've just ordered a 3000+ chip.
How much do you use??

I know that only the core needs to be covered on the XPs, so is the theory the same - i.e. just a small amount dead in the center - or should the entire heatspreader have a layer of the stuff?

A friend of mine bought a shuttle and A64 a few weeks ago and got a bit overzealous with the paste. His initial temps were a bit high so he pulled the chip and heatsink out, and had to use brute force to get the chip off the heatsink! The thermal paste had created such a bond that the chip flew across the room when he finally got it off

Obviously he used a *little* bit too much ;), but what's the right amount to use?

If you're going to be using Arctic Silver 5 or Ceramique, then I sugest you pop over to this page (http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm) and have a gander, as it has the exact instructions :)
