Anyone know if you specifically need a dual layer DVD drive to READ these? or whether any standard DVD drive is capable of reading them?
... I'm thinking Xbox drives specifically here, but if they can be read on a bog standard PC dvd drive then I'm sure I can get an Xbox drive (Thompson etc) that'll cope :)

Standard DVD drives should be able to read dual layer DVD's, as technically they shouldn't be that much different to dual layer dvd's used now for films.

I thought that may be the case, just wondered if the 'home' burning process would mean the media would end up technically different to those commercially available for films.
Hmmm, that NEC burner @ Dabs is looking ever more tempting :D
esp. at £54!

Only thing you might struggle on at the moment is getting the dual layer media at the moment. though i hear verbatim are gonna be pushing some out very soon. On a side note good news is that the big companies like Disney and Warner have decided that actually you should be allowed to make copies of products you bought, and are in discussion with sony at the moment, but thats all in the future for blu ray etc.

 no sh*t. Guess they finally realised that most ppl prefer to own an original copy of a product even if the previously had a pirated/downloaded version.
Lets hope the music industry catches on

Then how come Disney are currently shutting down all the custom cover sights on the web? Disney are like NAzis with mice instead of swastikas.
www.rambox.com (http://www.rambox.com) sell dual layer DVDs but they are £9.99 each! Word of caution on the NEC drive fillip, as its a hacked firmware that enables the dual layer burning it may not work with standard burning software. I think you need to tinker around with the settings somewhat to get it work also. I have the drive but i've been holding off flashing the firmware until i need to.

Why would you need a realistic looking cover on your own personal copy of a DVD... come off it, the only thing people use those for is making pirate copies (be it for themselves or for selling on). That's if you meant cover scan sites... if you mean fan-art covers, I should imagine they are pissed off at people using their copyrighted characters etc to make their own artwork.
As for the hacked NECs... if you don't have one yet, I assume you'd be buying the proper dual layer drive the 2510 as opposed to the 2500. It costs no more. Mine was ~£60 from ebuyer about 4 weeks ago.

I said 'custom covers' not scans. i used to replace some of my DVD covers with custom ones that looked better. Also you can download cover sets for films by the same director etc. If they allow you to make a back-up of the media which is the valuble part of the DVD then i dont see why they cant let you make a back-up of the cover too. :P
£60 for a dual layer drives a good price! :)

As mentioned before, does it play DVD movies... if so it'll be able to play films (and... I assume... data) written to dual layer discs (so I imagine everything will read them).
I still haven't tried one since they cost almost a tenner a disc

Ouch! Bit pricey for an experiment then!
I'll probably get one anyway...and then wait for someone else to test the discs ^_^

Do they make dual layer DVD-RW or DVD+RW?

Standard DVD movies you buy from the shops are all dual layer so your player should be able to play them nobother.
I have only seen dual layer +RW and DVD-RAM disks star.

£6.37 excl. VAT
Price from www.rambox.co.uk (http://www.rambox.co.uk/) is dropping already! They were £9.99 last week. ;)

;)I guess what i should have asked is Does anybody know if dual layer DVD-R disks are available or on the horizon? (that'll teach me not to phrase my questions correctly:p )
EDIT Having now got off my arse and Googled (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1622910,00.asp) it it appears that the current writers are only +R with -R not coming for a while yet. Looks like i'll be waiting a while till someone finally releases a +-Dual layer drive....:( Or possibly blu ray.....
