Not sure if this is the right place for this, but it doesn't seem to fit anywhere else so here goes..

Right, I bought a screen off ebay. Now this isn't any ordinary screen, its a 5.8" LCD touchscreen. Pretty nifty eh? It arrived this morning and well... I think pictures would better explain it:

^^as you can see i'm totally stuck. I'm fairly sure the black one is the 12v line, and I know for a fact that the blue one is the touch screen. But as for the other cable... I have no clue.. (oh, and btw if you need a bigger picture of the last one just click it, I hyperlinked...)

The screen didn't come with any sort of input adapter. I went down to maplins today (equivalent of radioshack to you american guys) and the guy said he'd only ever seen anything like it in a PS2. Short of going out and buying a PS2 just to see if the connections are the same, I'm asking if anyone knows how to convert a 16 pin "sumitomo-Y AWM 2896 80C" type cable to s-video or vga or something like that.

I know this is a complete long shot, but at the very least i get to show off my new screen!

Edit: oops, lol! I know the other cable is the video input adapter for the screen, i just mean i have no clue how to adapt it to fit vga/s-video.

Hi Swhibble,

The part number you give is for the ribbon cable itself. This seems to be used in many devices such as the Panasonic DVD player and on some CDRom drives. Any 16 pin flat cable connector could be used to make a converter up to a 15 pin HD connector.

That leaves the question of what the pin designations are. Do you have any data on the screen itself? Knowing the driver chip would be useful in finding out if it can be driven from svga.

This may be a good place to ask, if the lads here can't help you......But I'd be suprised if they cant

DMF-50944NCU-FW-2 google this No. I found a data sheet after a couple of searchs. But i used yahoo search. So maybe try Yahoo after google if you find nothing. Then you have to find out how to convert it.

I don't know if any of this is of use to you -

This (http://www.apollodisplays.co.uk/pdf_e/dmf/CAD/50944add_draw.pdf) details the pinouts of the 4 & 16-pin cables.

I think you'll need a suitable controller board to run it as a touchscreen, though.

Thanks for all your help guys!

I found the correct drivers, controllers and card inputs for the screen, but they're all about a squigillion years old and they don't make the input card for the screen anymore :duh:
Basically what I thought was a bargain turned out to be a waste of time and money. I could get the touchscreen working but it'll cost me $104 for the controller I found, but for a £15 screen it hardly seems worth it...

I might try reselling it on ebay if I can be arsed, if not I'll just chuck it... But I think theres a valuable lesson for everybody here, don't ever buy a touchscreen without the controllers, drivers, and knowing whether or not it takes VGA/S-video!!

I did some further investigation on that screen. It only accepts TTL inputs and wouldn't be compatable with an SVGA output. It may be possible to drive it from a PIC microcontroller but that could get heavy. I couldn't find any suitable projects covering it.

I'm in the market for such a screen but yours is a little on the large and complex side for what I had in mind. Don't chuck it though, I could give it a good home.

cool, ok i won't chuck it if you want it squelch... i've also got a pdf on the cabling inputs and so on if that'd makes life any easier for you.

just out of curiosity what kind of project did you have in mind?

The connections all need controller boards matching the screen - Ive seen these many times, in lots of different flavours. The 12V line needs an inverter these are cheap, its to power the backlight.

The best advise would be to extract the touch screen and buy another screen, then use the touch screen with it.

Unless Squelch can think of a better plan?

As it stands the screen needs an interface to drive it. The ribbon cable is an 8 bit parallel interface that needs some fancy timing. As I said a microcontroller could be used to drive some simple images with a bit of programming, but it will be complex.

Swhibble you have PM. :D

No you don't Swhibble, PM's are a little wonky atm, I'll try again tomorrow

you can always drop me an e-mail, swhibble AT cgmodder.com ^_^

EDIT: actually it was my bad, sorry, my PM box was full, i didn't realise you're only allowed 2 messages... try again whenever :D
