That's just crazy. But I dunno... it seems almost over the top. I mean... no, I dunno what I mean.

Some mods seem like the computer is in there just to class it as a PC mod. That box is a work of art fo sho. It's crazy. I just can't imagine having it on my desk somehow.

Maybe someone will get me... maybe I just sound a little nuts.

Anyway I'll close with a "wow, fantastic work".

A lot of works gone into it but IMHO its ugly as hell.

I'm with you on this one. I'm probably gonna get blasted for this one, but as of late this seems to be the trend. Kinda like taking a civic and putting on the most expensive body kit, but behind all the stuff its still a civic. Not to say that Hobbes hasn't done a fantastic job cutting and shaping wood (its really amazing stuff, very detailed and 3D like) it just all seems out of place. I like to intergrate a mod into a PC...not just on top of it. I guess at the end of it all its just not my thing, cause there will be a ton of people saying "oooh" and "ahhh" over it. To each their own..

Maybe i should just shut my big fat mouth ;)

He has one thing going for him that the rest of us don't... when our mods are rusting away in a landfill someday, he'll have the backbone for a large jewelry box or a small religious shrine... :o

Agree, too many times I see somebody create something and simply drop in an ITX board. Top mod projects tend to be either from talented Modelers or Modders. Hobbes project combines both camps. He designed and built the chassis from ground up by hand. Everything has been fabricated other than the PSU internals. Not only is he a Modder, hes an Artisan. You don't have to like it in order to appreciate his time and labor of love.

I knew this would generate some good discussion ^_^

Tres Myst.

It has a nice style/feel to it. OK, it's not how I would do a PC, but then again Orac3 is not how I would do my PC either, and that doesn't make it bad or ugly. I think it's an impressive piece of work, and when it is finished, it will look spectacular.

Think of it this way: a Wurlitzer 1015 "One More Time" is just an automated record player, right? All the neon, bubbles, chrome and polished wood is just functionless bling, right? But it is also that bling that gives it its character, and makes a Wurlitzer the proud centerpiece in many a bachelor's pad. Well, this is Hobbes' PC version of a jukebox.

Say what you want (and do you), but I think it is an original mod, and well executed.

Hola folks! I wanted to thank Bill for spreading me around a bit to the other forums, and I would like to also thank you guys for your sincerity of opinions. Sometimes you don't always get the most honest impressions of your work from your home forums. I can appreciate both the positive and negative comments about my work. Watching the Orac case showed me that not all great works turned out to everyones taste in the end. I personally haven't focused on spreading too much attention to the project so that I could share it with more people once it's complete. Right now the work log is a ramble of half finished pics that pretty much only I can see the end results of. Some of you may appreciate the case more once its painted and assembled in the end, some may still think it over the top. For me it really is more art than mod, and an expression of what I want sitting on my desk. More definitive pics will be coming in the next few months of the painted frame, and I look forward to hearing your truthful opinions. Until then, keep the comments coming and I will check back from time to time.

Hobbes, you've said it right there - "it's more art than mod".

As a model and piece of art, it's superb. As a mod? Nah. You've created something from scratch - that's not modding, it's a whole different term that I can't think of yet :) Much the same as Orac. It's the difference between "custom" and "customized".

I can't even call it a custom case, what with all that EMI flying around unhindered (same goes for all the other woodworked setups) :D

But it is one fantastic piece of work, hands down - congrats :)

I am working on putting the pics on a separate page, but as of now I don't have it completed. I'll post a link in here once I work something out.

Hey, Hobbes, welcome to the forums! I read through the Orac3 project log a while ago. I really like the way it turned out. But, whether or not I like it, it is one of the most involved mods I have seen, your attention to detail is amazing, as are your skills as a modder. The amount of work you have put into that case amazes me. You have far better skills and far more patience than I do.

Can't wait to see how this one turns out...

*edit: P.S. - I like the wood idea of your current case. Ive built a couple wood cases, nothing as involved as your current mod, and they both were constructed around ATX computer chassis, but my current case never fails to turn heads at LAN parties :D Check out my GV album from the link in my sig.

Before this current project, Hobbes built the infamous Steel and Glass (http://images.gruntville.com/casegallery/Steel-and-Glass)

@ BuffaloBoy, Orac 3 was built by g-gnome. btw: g-gnome has another project in progress he hasn't revealed yet. He resides mostly @ bit-tech.net. Rest assured his next project will rock the mod world again.

oops :o :o :o I've seen both cases, and I must have confused the names, sorry.

Steel and Glass is still a kickass mod ^_^ and everything I said in teh first post still applies.

Okay, well i finally got off my butt and posted a "pics only" section under the GvL worklogs. You can now see the majority of pics without having to sort thru 50 pages of chat. Click here for the link (http://www.gruntville.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9857&highlight=)

Now that is the best attitude I have ever seen a modder put out, nice one hobbes!

This is why sometimes I feel posting a worklog is bad for some projects, only because nobody knows what the modder has envisioned. I've seen project logs totally change because of "suggestions" posted in the worklog. You should always create your cases to your liking, not someone elses. You take the good with the bad, something i learned at last years winter CPL C3.

Love the craftsmanship hobbes..keep up the good work :)

I've seen project logs totally change because of "suggestions" posted in the worklogYea, we're really in a weird realm with internet worklogs. Youre putting your unfinished creation out there in full view of everyone. You have to have blinders on, yet be receptive. Imagine Ed Roth building cars out in public w/ onlookers telling him "I think the Bubble top would look tacky", "How come youre not using these headlights instead?"

Its your vision, not theirs.

I think it looks alright, deffinatly some awesome work going into it, Hobbes has some real talent. :D Id say your one of the modding Elite. I think the lighted runes on the main pillars are totally awesome.

I do agree with the rest of you though. Whenever I see questions on forums like "What do you you guys think I should do" or otherwise, that says to me that the creator of the mod has no idea what hes doing, no real vision for his work, then it turns into a community project. I mean Im all for some secondary opinions if you cant decide on something, but not for letting the mob design my work.

Id say in the end, you shouldnt be out to please society with anything you do including modding, there will always be at least 1 person who doenst like what your doing.

Keep it hobbes, pissing people off is a step in the right direction :D

It's the difference between "custom" and "customized".
cool, thats exactly right.

Well the project is finally wrapping up and here is a better pic of the project. There are still some details left unfinished but most of the design is done. Bill should be happy with all the mesh I squeezed into it :) There will be a little more mesh on the front to cover up the ugly radiator fins.

Of course for those of you who still don't like the final look then I'm pretty much out of luck because the case is practically finished and I have no more excuses  Here is the link again to the pics only thread where you can see the whole project: Stormbringer (http://www.gruntville.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9857)
