View Full Version : YEEEEEEEHAWWWWWWW!!! I Got the job! (perpetual new job celebration thread)

Starbuck3733T
13th July 2004, 22:50
This thread is for posting the good news! leaving that old crappy workplace and moving to a new one... I had the honor of starting it ;)

Not only did I get the job (Network Coordinator at Penn State University's Material's research lab), but I asked for more money and got it!

WOOHOO! I start august 2. Now I have to document all the utilities I wrote for my own use in this semi-awful webmaster/content maintainer/monkey job... and handle all the stuff they're going to throw at me when they hear I'm leaving.

I've suffered for about 1.5 years here, it was good experience, and there are a couple people I will dearly miss (Tom, Shane, Ellen), but none of them could make me stay, cept for maybe Tom. Tom has taught me SO much. He broke my .NET cherry, and got me hardcore into it - its the best thing since sliced bread IMHO. He got me into SQL, and bulletproof programming. He is the epitomy of what a coder should be, and I'll miss him A LOT. Not to mention that he's electronically inclined like I am, and he's great to boune ideas off.

So one thing remains: the resignation letter. I'm going to be a bit strategic when it comes to that, as I know the VP of the division is leaving for Europe on thursday. If I drop it then, they'll be uncoordinated enough to make my leaving easier on me, since he'll be in the EU for a month.

You all may remember my last broken english faux resignation letter - can't do that here.

Advice? Congrats! I'm bouncing off the walls and I just had to share, shoot me if you feel it neccessary.

PS: the MRL (Materials reasearch lab) has a full machine shop!!! (WOOT!)

I, too, will have to employ some diplomacy and restraint when it comes to writing a resignation letter... <_<

Perhaps we should make a permanent "Celebrations" thread here, where people can announce their personal victories, dance around the room, and have praise heaped upon them. :D

It's more the opposite of getting a new job as well...

Well, this isn't for sure yet, but its the closest thing I've had to a job so far.

I went to my great grandfather's funeral last weekend and while I was there I talked to a great uncle of mine. Cool guy, been doing graphic and webdesign as a job for years. He is now working on Texas Instruments website. I told him I did the same thing even though my coding is pretty bad(awful) and rusty, and that I pretty much just did design and layout in Dreamweaver and Photoshop and graduate college in May. He was like "Cool! I can call some people and probably get you a job, just get a portfolio site up as soon as you can and I'll see what I can do."

So, the next bit of cash I get is going towards my own webhosting and I need to clean up a few sites so they look more attractive to anybody who might be looking at me to do it for a job. I know some of y'all remember the website I used to have linked in my profile, probably gonna have to get rid of the scantilly clad women to make it presentable at all.

If and when I get the portfolio site up I'll post it for you guys so you can give me some commentary on it if you'd like. If not, just check it out.
So, while this isn't a guaranteed thing, it at least gives me something to prepare for after college, which is nice, because I had no clue what I might be doing.

Thats cool mate :thumb:

FWIW, other than being graphically intensive the disign of your site was spot on (to a layperson like me). Im sure if you put your mind to it you should be laughing.

I use a great place for hosting (it UK based though) 1GB space 75GB monthly bandwidth, 4 domains, CPanel, unlimeted FTP and email accounts, PHP SQL and a shed load of other stuff i dont remember ... all for very little money really (especially when you consider that i share it with a couple of mates ^_^)

This isn't really a 'job', but it's damned close enough...

I'm leaving my current lab at the end of this year and going back to school full time so I can finish up a PhD in somewhat less than 5 years total!

Regardless, I'll be doing DAT right now (drug of abuse testing) starting with MDMA and cocaine studies. Ahh, it'll be so much more fun than this place, I'm really tired of 'ultra pure' water... ha. What a lie that is!

About 3wks ago; I accepted a new "senior" title and relocation within the same company. I'll be moving from one division to a new division which is basically a startup in Austin. The company many will know as the company formally to have a dropped e.

My new title:

Not a big suprise to me, but hey I got the job!

Its being a lab tech in one of the pc labs on campus. Basically that means sitting around most of the day and helping somebody do generally easy stuff now and then. This do nothing job pays 6.25 an hour. Ahhh water cooling here I come!

Considering i'm really a pc tech by trade(the tech people had no openings) i'm just not suprised that I got it. Now i just gotta hope that I didn't get it from under the feet of a friend of mine...

Congrats.

I also got a new job. It's not in the firefighter field but it is good enough for me while I go to school.

I am working at the Abercrombie and Fitch main office here in Ohio. I start the 8th of May working in the distribution center. I start out at $9.30 an hour and I get 40+ hours a week.

SWEEEET!!!

Last week I got a dream job for someone at the tender age of 21 and a student of political science. I got elected vice-president of the ...student body/student-gathering-thing-in-Sweden-that-all-university-students-have-to-be-a-part-of.

13 months of being a payed politician. Very nice for me. Not so nice for all the students that I'm supposed to represent if I suck at it.

Well great news, although some of it is kinda late: I got a full time job with benefits last month! Getting paid a little more then I was before but I am now full time instead of part time and I am doing the same thing I was before!

Second bit of news is that I finished my last class of college and I am going to graduate! I have a month until the summer commencment but it sure is a relief knowing that I passed my class and am actually going to get a degree!
No more schooling for me yay!!

Well, two parts here. Graduated in May with my bachelors of Applied Arts and Sciences! 5 years and I'm done, woohoo! Also, I start Monday as a sales rep for a local fitness club. Nothing spectacular but its a paycheck and will give me somethin to save up so I can get into my own place.

Im hoping to get my first job at a local hardware store that i applied for on friday. I don't know if they'll hire me because I can't work very much hours, but i know a family friend that works there and they love him so if all goes well I can start making some money. By the way, I'm only 15.

Wow, everybody's getting around, it seems. Congrats to all of you. Nothing like the feeling of starting a new job that you're really excited about.

I've been mucking around at a support job for about a year now, and just yesterday landed a job doing tests for a major swedish telecom company. Maybe not the sexiests job in the world, but I'll be hired by another company and sit there as a consultant, so it's a pretty sweet deal. Plus, it's a lot closer to what I studied back in school.

Kickoff: Aug 31, after three weeks of vacation. Life's good.

I have a paid internship as a systems engineer and then once I graduate in a year that gets put into a full time employee. Very good money finally (after retail and fast food)

I work at http://www.xilinx.com/ they are the leading programmable logic company in the world. Have a few chips on those Mars rovers and such. Just thought I would share my schooling paying off after I considered quitting!

I got it! I went in and did an application and some testing, (math, spelling, Excel, call center, typing,) and they said they'd call me in a few days.

They called me an hour and a half later! lol

So I went in today, had my interview, did my drug test, then signed the offer sheet. I'm employed again!

I start next Monday in the call center for about a week until the sales training class starts the next week.

Ive had quite a few shity jobs myself. From working in a nasty old supermarket to a crappy resturant and working in dust all day in construction.

All I can say is if its honest work then there is honor in that.

Congrats on the new job, hold on for a while and something good will turn up at some point dont worry.

Congrats and I am glad I don't live with ya, 'cause I can only imagine what you smell like when you get home! Was there a train of stray cats following you as you walked down the block?

But like jaguarking said, it's honest work and it pays the bills. At least you won't be on an episode of that show "The World's Dirtiest Jobs". It's not like you are cleaning the NYC sewers, collecting bat guarno, or anything like that....

Besides, like you said, it is a good workout. So you will get all nice and buffed up for the summer to make the girls at the beach swoon. :D
