View Full Version : GG APC Overnight (not!)

Guess what? Just unpacking my rigs when they finally returned today after being sent by overnight service instead of the sameday courier that took them to Modfest and they're both damaged!

First one I unpacked was the Lian Li - I spotted something was amiss as soon as I removed the top layers of bubble wrap. The top panel was bent up at one corner for a start. In vague autopilot mode, I pressed on it to bend it back again but couldn't do so completely.
Continuing the inspection found a front panel retention clip knocked out of its frame and somehow the door for the USB ports had got its hinge broken. I began to get paranoid at this point (with it having bookkeeping software on it) as this sort of damage seemed like it couldn't have happened in the box. Fresh packing tape on the box backed this suspicion up but as I'd left my packing tape in the hotel room for the event, then borrowed some and only used as little as I could, I could understand why it might have been retaped.

Worried now, I only gave the rest of the machine a perfunctory glance before moving on to plug it all in and check for a clean boot and see if there was any data loss. It's up in Windows behind me now, halfway through a virus scan before I reboot for a scandisk.

Having confirmed it would still run at least, I moved onto Hex...
Slit the tapes on it and opened it up - I was reassured to see all the packaging material I'd used seemingly as I remember packing it. Loads of it, all aroud, with the case securedly cushioned in the middle of it.
As I'd written "this side up" on the top and drawn arrows all around the sides, whoever had taped the boxes for me had also taped a large arrow on the side to reinforce this... to no avail.

Either some muppet had put the box down hard on its front side or the van driver had driven so violently that at some point, the whole thing must have been slammed against one of the van walls.
The whole of the mesh in the top front door has been dented all the way in and the rear of the door has split.

I've had to walk away from it and type this out to build up the courage to check out the rest of it (which I'll be off to do shortly).

Been in a queue on APC Overnight's phone twice now with no answer and there's no support section on the APC website to find out what to do.
Have dropped a quick line to Symbiosis but obviously, it's outside of working hours now, so it's another thing to add to tomorrow's list of things to do.

A quick google showed that I'm not the only one whose rig has been trashed by APC - http://www.over-clock.co.uk/ivb/index.php?act=ST&f=19&t=4677

B'stards!

I'm gutted for you m8, are they insured, 99% of overnight couriers are not, you have to pay extra for that!

Reminiscent of Mashie's 'Bug mod' that got trashed by American Airlines last year.

That really f***ing stinks man, hope you can get some kind of compensation, even if that doesnt make up for the fact it's your hard work down the pan

... Do you know who the couriers were for that one?if your talking to me the compay was called...yep you got it APC overnight, I think most of the drivers are from "job agencys" as I had so many different driver's over a 6 month peirod and so many goods got trashed that I now use a company called timetravel and I havent had 1 thing broke since!

Sorry Bill, I meant Kev. He had to spend a while before the show trying to beat his case back into shape after it looked like it had been dropped on one corner. His must have been an overnight courier too, as it had to come from Ireland.
I told them they couldn't pick mine up till Friday, so they sent a sameday courier which I was hoping they'd use on the way back (as I said I needed it for Monday for work).
Looks like they ignored my request and sent it overnight instead as it only got here at the end of the day today (meaning I've lost another two days of being able to track any stock/orders properly).

You're right about the contract thing though I think - I chatted to my driver while we grabbed the boxes from the van, saying I hoped they hadn't been dropped or anything (the Li Li box looked more misshapen than I remembered it) and he said he'd worked for this company before at other times and even that they were pretty cool about damaged goods (sounds like it must happen a lot with them).

They'll never get my business, that's for sure - this time, it wasn't my choice though. :(

Well, I s'pose I really ought to stop posting and go look inside Hex tbh.
With any luck the only thing damaged'll be the 9800 that made me crash at the show. :h34r:

That sort of delivery is SO TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE, I cannot find the words... and you know I have a way with words.

Complain and nail them for all the money you can get, the bastards. This is beyond negligence, and they deserve to SUFFER!

When my rig is finished, I tell ya, I intended to take it to and from shows in person, and I'm twice as determined to do that now. I trust none of these fly-by-night courier cowboys.

Aye, the only people allowed to move my rig are me, myself and I (oh, and my dad but only under my supervision :D)
I'm just really concerned about what will happen when we have to move house next summer ... poor PC suffering away in the back of a Pickfords van :(

Just got home and found my rig waiting for me.

Boxes look good except some guy re wrapped it and labled the box the wronk way fround so its been transported upside down....

When I took it out all looked good but when I open the case disaster..

The pump had been ripped from the case and was burried in my PCI slots. It must have gotten a bang somewhere and the impact snapped the corners of the pump mount..

Graphics card seesm to have survived but my sound is dead.... the fan mount on the rad seesm to have gotten a bit of a twist and one of the fans is sticking but that is easily repairable.

If I can get the sound to work I will be happy.. but I am never again letting my case travel unless its with me..

I guess that's another thing I factored in with Metaversa Heavy Angel: all the WC components are firmly anchored in place. The case might get battered (and given the plastic bezel, let's face it, the outsides would be toast), but its innards won't go anywhere.

All those PC mods made from army surplus ammunition boxes suddenly start to make a lot of sense here... <_<

Update.

I was tied up all weekend since I got back with family matters so only got back to the machine today.

Its worse than it appeared origionally. The radiator grill I have repaired but the raditor its self seems to have gotten a twist and is now leaking water from the core. Not alot but enough. I dont know how they managed to do it as the airplex is a hefty beast but they managed it. Also the fan that was sticking has a broken casing.

The pump is working but needs a base plate (luckily I have one lieing around from an earlier misshap).

Grpahics card seems to be gone but that was giving me trouble allreadt and an RMA was allrady being organised so I wont complain about that.

I havent tried the soundcard yet as I dont want to run it for long untill I get the rad sorted.

This is bloody ridiculous if u ask me, apc are basically CRAP i had a parcel arive at work in a box that was delivered by them and the box didnt look like it's origional state it was bashed and all sorts, luckily the sender had put the package in a box inside a box and had severly bubble wrapped it. This really does show what kind of reputation they have.

The best courier i have used is Initial next day (ebuyer use them) and i neva had a problem or broken product yet

Rule 1: DONT USE APC FOR ANYTHING.

Rule 2: DONT USE APC FOR ANYTHING.

Rule 3: REPORT THE SCUM TO TRADING STANDARDS

My local Initial guy (I probably see him more than most of my mates...) is great... having said that, I have received a case from ebuyer with a broken front.

I don't think you can really trust any couriers to treat your goods with the care that you would treat them yourself. It's a real shame, but that's the service industry for ya.

The first rule of mod club is: You don't use APC.

The second rule of mod club is: You. Don't. Use. APC.

Guess what the third rule is... :D

Man that sucks guys. Makes me wonder if all the effort you guys took to get your cases ready for the masses at modfest was worth it when the organisers use shuch a discrasefull carrier. I wonder what CPC have to say about it.

Actually Matt, those are before pics - I had done that repair before hitting ModFest.

Here's one of the worst bits (the rest were things like the DVD mods being busted on both rigs and damage to the Lian Li bezel, top panel, frame and fixings)

Thanks for the offer though Nath. :)
I'll give 'em a while to sort it first, then we'll send the WizD Brute Squad round.
