hi fellas

i have a problem with macfee. my ex misses has been on the dog an bone for 2hours trying too get it sorted. it says here virus index needs updating. but when we try it says too close down other instances of macfee but everything is closed down. click update again and it says something like do you wish to veiw unsecure data etc etc, even clicking yes too this brings a blank screen. anyone know what we need too do ? why does macfee say there is an older version thats outta date running ? she brought the thing just other day from croydon pc world so its a valid retail version. she was running norton but was advised too buy and install macfee.

what do you guys sugest we do, return said program and ask for norton instead. or what ? we are at ends width with it and have given up now

heh, my fix would be to uninstall mcafee and toss the cd in the trash... I absolutely hate mcafee, even moreso than norton...

Why was she asking for antivirus advice? That makes me suspicious that she thinks she might be infected. If thats the case then a virus can prevent installation of updates etc... Find out about disinfection/scanning from safe mode or with DOS disks to ensure ther eis no infection.

I dont like Norton or Mcafee either. I use sophos (as part of works licence agreement) and antivir, its free and works pretty good.

sophos is good, i use nod32 personally. It has a great detection engine, but sometimes it will find stuff but not give you the options to remove it...

yes blue fella

it's for the youngun fella dont want alsorts of stuff thats out there at his fingertips, yes she is my ex but we talk more now than when we was together. hard too explain, we met in a online chat room (yes bad idea) but we got together and for around 2years eyerything was fine then on a feb14th we split and i came back too live with my parents while i sorted things out. but i did used too live in london and travel too norwich too work, only got too see them at weekends, would leave work at 2am friday night and then travel 8 hours home would leave late sunday night and travel another eight hour back too work. put a big strain on us both and we split. it was then that i said i would keep on treating the lad if he was my own.

Why do you all hate Norton so much ? Your getting me worried, I have that installed.
Is there anything else I can run with it to hopefuly bump up the protection a little. (preferably free)

I finally got shot of Norton recently as I was sick of how intrusive and hard to get shot of it was, plus it's a resource hog.

I'm running BitDefender9 ATM - it's not free (£18 for the year), could possibly still be a drain on resources but all seems well so far.

i found norton a bit intimidating for myself. i had seen mcafee running on other systems so decided too swap over.

i always thought mnorton and mcafee was good progams too use and own ? helpful tips or even problems people encountered and fixed would be a good help too me an GU :D

I've not had an awful lot of experiance with Mcafee TBH, but from what i can remember the GUI seems a little clumsy. Norton is just hungry, and it misses too much, its pretty good for someone who doesnt want to bother telling it to update and scan etc. I dont like the way they describe virus details either, but that due to being spoilt with sophos i think. Sophos is resource humgry too, but its much less intrusive with normal working. I also dont like the rest of the Norton internet security package.

Sophos is my antivirus of choice, and the emergency scanner (on DOS disks) is very powerful, and pretty quick, but it costs a fortune. Luckily the licence allows for employees to use a copy at home.

Antivir (http://www.free-av.com/) is my free AV of choice, its pretty good, finds some stuff that norton misses, reminds about updating etc... They have just cahnged the GUI but i dont htink its lost any functionality, i'm not used to it yet though.

I'm running Norton Internet Security 2006 on my laptop and it just sucks the life out of it, got Mcafee on some laptops at work, it's better, (the spamkiller sucks up memory though so turn that off) and I have had similar problems getting them to update the first time, once that's done I forget about it.

As for AV of choice, I'm a big fan of nod32, hardly places any drag on the system and caught everything I threw at it:thumb:. We're using Symantec Antvirus 10 @ work it's far superior to any Norton branded product, and it's a walk in the park to administer in an enterprise environment....

I am surprised there is no community built AV software like Linux is as an OS.

Imagine the power of lots of programmers doing it for free... anyone got skills enough to get in on it... im in.

Their is community built AV software, take clamav for instance:

I still use AVG, never had any issues other than it not being able to auto update whilst behind the proxy server @ my uni'.

I just tried AntiVir and it almost totally stopped my PC from responding, I'm not sure if it just has a conflict with some other software I alredy have installed but I had to dump it, it slowed down the PC so much that the only way I could get shot of it was to run in safe mode and go from there.
Now that I have deleted it my PC is running as it was before I tried it......Strange huh ?

hmm ... interesting. I've not noticed any slowdowns yet, but i also havent checked the resources its using since the update.
