View Full Version : External rad mount and bulkhead fittings

I have plan to resurect "Glacial" from the parts bin. The old beast was comically overcrowded so after a bit of thinking I've decided to mount the from 120mm fan externally and bolt the rad in from of that. (I'll stick a photo up when I get home.)
Now this means I need to pass the waterlines back in through the front panel. Easy would be to drill a hole about 1mm greater than the tube OD. However a pushfit bulkhead fitting would look sooooo much better. My problem is that Its going to be an absolute sod to fit as you would have to get the hose cut exactly the right lenght and then then push that in before ou attached the rad/fan to the case which is going to be really annoying. Recon this is hopless or not?

Not only will the hose have to be exact, but you might have trouble seperating it later.
If you can find the right length bulkhead fitting with a male thread to a coupler then a male thread fitting into rad. Probably wouldn't have enough room for fittings though.

I'm doing something similar at the back panel of BaDassumption and came to the conclusion that bulkhead fittings would only complicate matters. I've instead used 3/4" holes for air cooling on the back panel that also fits the water-cooling hoses, so they can go through any number of locations. I've mocked it up a few different ways and have to say, if you like hoses, its great... and I do... if not, well... :D
Oh... I've drilled the holes for a perfect fit so the tubing doesn't move...

Not ideal buuut...Maybe recess the bulkhead fitting(on some type of bracket) inside the case so you can have a bit of slack?

You might get away with using BSPT pushfit stem adapters on your rad going straight into the bulkhead fittings, perhaps?

How about a set of these (http://www.alphacool.de/xt/product_info.php?products_id=978&cPath=5_45_47)? I have been informed they are restrictive but have never come across any actual evidence to back it up. Alphacool_Chris might have some expeirience of them.

That's exactly what I was going to suggest. I intend to use 'em if I ever get round to starting a project. :duh:

Good idea but the fan is 32mm I think so they wouldn't have enough lenght.
I must get these photos up to explain.

What about a thick aluminium plate that the fan/rad mount to, and the plate subsequently mount to the case. Then if you can use a small lenght of rigid tubing (maybe even that black rigid alphacool stuff you found a while back, but a length of copper or acrylic tube would look better) terminating in a pushfit the other side of the plate.

The screw fittings, came with the rad, I'll lose them and use norgren metal pushfits, assuming I have enough. Fan is a 38mm panaflo, andit looks liek a set of 50mm bolds would fix the whole lot to the case, which will get a new set of decent castors.

So what distance are we looking at between the front of your case and the face of your rad where the fittings go - about 45mm?

Yep a bout that, the shroud has some depth as well so 50mm shoudl do it. maybe a few washers if nec.

Forgot to ask - what size tubing are you running?

10/7mm OD Legris tubing on pushfits, but also a bit of 12mm nylon from the res to the pump, and soem other complications we won't need to go into just yet!

GOt it attached. 50mm bolts, but had to thread on the nut as a space and used a wire grill on the inside to get the bolts the right depth.

What kind of rad is that? It looks exactly like my Noise Isolator dual pass 120 :o It came with 1/2" barbs (got it in the US, of course), but I slapped on 8/11 compressions (for Tygon 8/10 tubing).

yep, you it cheap way back and thought it fitted the job here. It came with what looks like 10mm Innovatek-style compression fittings.
How do you like the look. You can see the finish I have to the side panels. Aa the system will be choked with wire and tubign I though a bit industrial would suit.

Risky the G1/4 male thread to male thread bulkhead fittings i got from RS are really long and would probably fill that gap quite nicely. I will look for the part number to see if they have measurements.

The hassle is that the bracing for the case corner is lined up with the bottom port so I may have to consider using that flexible metal bose again to tweak it up. (or possibly two 45deg fittings......)

The fittings i used are RS part number 497-678 and are available from G1/4" to 1". I would gestimate the length of fitting to be 50-60mm.
