View Full Version : Help...I messed up somewhere

Earlier today I was moving my system out of its case and onto the desk (to clean out the case and mod it a bit in a few weeks).

Upon moving the WC loop I noticed that it was leaking again, so I decided to empty the whole thing and leave it to one side until I get the new bits I want for it.
So I attached the old Radeon heatsink and my Thermaltake Volcano (boooo) to the CPU for the interim.

However upon switching the system on the BIOS reports a CPU temp of 90 degrees centigrade!
This clearly isn't correct, but as it begins to climb the system shuts itself down. Any ideas why this could suddenly be happening? Perhaps (I hope not) I've damaged the core in some way that the temps are screwy but the chip itself still works ... I don't know, I'm just clutching at straws here.

Help!

Well, im stating the obvious here really but reseat the volcano with some fresh paste. And whilst its off examine its base and the CPU for damage.

Preliminary inspections looked fine but I'll go and check again. The thing that stands out is - it's physically impossible for the chip to get that hot within a few seconds! And if it was, the heatsink would be burning to the touch, which it isn't.

Bizarre! I reseated the CPU and gave it a new layer of thermal compound and it's fine now, operating at 40 degrees.

I hate the whine of the 80mm fan already :'(

Glad you got it sorted.

Yup, ive seen that a few times before. It does not take much to compromise the thermal conection and if thats compromised the CPU will heat up very quickly indeed. Thankfully it didnt do any damage.

lol without a heatsink an Athlon XP with go over 100C by the time your Mobo has POST'ed. I know this from personal experience. :D

Wow
Well it wasn't totally unprotected, as the HSF definately was there! Anyway it's working now. Radeon 9800 running a little hot under load ... the sooner I get my WC loop back active the better!

I say feed the volcano's from TT to the lions.

They give way to much noise (mums pc sounds like a rocket) and still runs at temps in excess of 48 degrees, i know its a duron but thats kinda hot. Esspecialy for the ammount of noise it creates.

I noticed putting a thinner layer of Thermal compund really makes a difference and is well worth the extra time to do. Need the connecton as close as possible.

Mind you Thermaltake did a good job of the xaser 3, its wonderful:wub:
