View Full Version : [uk] The best place for acrylic sheets?

JamesM
31st December 2005, 16:56
I'm after some *cheap* red, green, clear and mirrored acrylic sheet for some future mod ideas... anyone know the best place(s) to get these in the uk?

I'm on a tight-ass budget as I've an 8 month old little warrior about to start running around causing mayhem, so prices have to be right... anyone interested in selling decent sized off-cuts would also help a great deal :)

Many thanks, and Happy New Year! :toast: :dremel:

its more difficult than you think finding a good stock of sheet plastic in england lbreevesii
whereas you in the us have acryan plastic which is sold allmost everywhere

ahh you poor islanders:huh:

thing is for me is that there isn't a place for me to be able to physically go and check out the acryllic and such, sure I can order from someplace that sells acryan, but i'd like to have some hands on beforehand.

Yeah, I know what you mean... looking at that site, they have a good selection, but its very confusing and I'd like to see what it is I'm buying beforehand... also, they don't seem to do any red or green at 5mm thick...

B&Q and Homebase, etc. do nothing but take the piss when it comes to perspex sheets - st00pidly overpriced and in most cases the stock they carry is of poor quality and scratched to hell and back.

I'll email the peeps at that site to see if they can supply samples, although with the small order I'd like to place I very much doubt it :(

i checked out B&Q yesterday
and yes it was scratched up pretty bad and they only stock clear
whereas most people on this forum that are modding in the us are using acryan plastic and you can actually see the quality

Here's (http://www.technologysupplies.co.uk/acatalog/Coloured_Cast_Sheet_5mm.html) another site that might have what you're looking for.

Ooooh, now that seems more like it, I'll have to give them a call (no prices on site). They also do rods and tubes, so theres a bonus :D

Thanks also, Fillip, although its a little more than I think I'll need, but its worth checking them out :)

Just incase I'm on the wrong path, I'm after the same stuff used in this (http://www.bit-tech.net/modding/2005/11/23/machinatrix_part1/3.html) mod for the red, and some green as used in the Orca3 mod.

Also, sorry to go slightly off-topic, but does anyone know of somewhere I can get some small wheels like the lian-li, but more of a swivel castor type thing with plenty of bling-bling?

Cheers again guys, you're very helpful :)

The Technology Supplies Ltd place has cast and extruded acrylic sheets, I linked to the more expensive but better quality cast acrylic, so it's worth digging around the site a little more. They also have rods, tubes and other shaped acrylics :thumb:

Well, after searching all week, I haven't had much luck so far... this places already mentioned are way too expensive for what I need, so next week I'll hit the town and stick my nose in a few sign writers shops to see what sort of prices they want...

I'm only after off cuts really, so £100+ for 8x8ft sheets seems silly :duh:

With that said, I did see some offerings on eBay - £10 for 30x40cm sheets of 10mm thick clear plexi - perfect for some structure work I might be doing... shame they only have clear though...

 Heh? I gave you a link to a store that sells 1m x 0.5m sheets for ~£15, how is that too expensive when you're looking to pay a tenner for sheets less than half that size?

Sorry, forgot to say, yeah, I'm going to order from them also :thumb:

But I need a 10mm thick sheet or two for an idea I have... I might be making a box from scratch, and what I want to incorporate is a wee bit heavy, so I might need the extra thickness to take a bit of weight.

ok, the page you provided there is only for solid colour sheets. They only provide semi transparent sheets in 3mm... and you can't order through their website as its for educational establishments only. So all orders must be phoned through, which is still cool, although the prices are slightly more according to their most recent catalogue.

Still pretty good deals though :thumb: :wiz:

This is a good place for Cast Acrylic
http://www.hindleys.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1483&osCsid=fa1356e82a8031ddadfab7bcc6eaf12a

I also found
http://www.hobartlaserables.com/index.php?main_page=index
but the site wont work for me now, it must be down, but these places do cast Acrylic & Flourescent Acrylic at good prices.
I know its an old thread but modders always need Acrylic supplies.
Hope this helps someone
Technology supplies only sell online to Schools to order you need to email for a quote & pay by transfer.
