Before PCs, H2O Performance VWs occupied my thoughts 24/7/356 and this UK show is where the world's best tuners could be found

VW Vortex's show coverage (http://vortex3.rely.net/gallery/gallery2.php?mode=album&album=/Events/Enthusiast/GTI%20International/2004)

Someday I will goto this show.... Pug, you in?

I see Brits are no longer safe from Blue lenses either.

btw, Kev, isn't your SEAT Toledo mechanically identical to the VW Bora?

Knipex
31st May 2004, 09:07
Ya you got me on that its based on the Golf Bora chassis and uses the 1.9TDi VW engine used by Audi and VW (although rumor has it that the Seat engine is Audi tuned)

Some changes on the Toledo for the Bora/Golf

Tighter, less assisted steering (I find you get more feedback)
Harder suspension (designed for more grip less roll and a slightly harder more responsive ride)
Much Much Much more comfortable seats. (dont know about the american version but the European Bora / Golf has terrible seats.
Slightly larger interior.
Much better looking car. (OK I will agree its arse isn't the most beautyful thing you will ever see)
Much better equipped as standard.
Cheaper.
Less badge prestige.

In short Spanish flare and passion wrapped up in German engineering and reliability.

Right, my mk4 Golf had horrible seats. Too bad we can't get SEATS in the states. People would eat those up. Alas my heart lies with mk1 and 2 gens

HAhahaha..

I must confess I sorta like the blue tails... would go nicely with this idea i had for my jetta (someday It will be modified, I have no garage now!).

Start w\ a 1 foot wide stripe of candy blue at an angle, then a strip of the original red, then blue for the rest of teh car on back. i had a picture but its at home and i'm serverless for the moment.

Ahhh

Mark 1's and 2's

Why didnt you say so.

First hot hatch the origional

but still dog ugly.:p

Let me present my first car (mine had no sunroof but had nifty alloys:cool: .)

The Opel Ascona

My dad had one and in my wilder youth I cut a Nissan Primera in half with it. £200 fixed the ascona. Bought my own a few weeks later.

Looks like my 86 Jetta.

Loved my mk1 GTIs. Tons of tweeks you can do.

Or a twinnie... ;)

Where was the bug bash you linked btw?

*Cries*

I can mod, i can do electronics, but for the life of me the cars still intimidate me. I think i just need to tinker on something with LESS than 100K miles on the original engine. Gotta get rid of the existing problems before I go creating new ones

3rd June 2004, 15:55
starbuck its probably best to get something cheap (so something over 100k miles on in it) to mess with that you don't mind killing. Best way to learn imo, its how i did it, plus if you work out how to keep a car going when its falling apart, its all downhill from there

Starbuck3733T
3rd June 2004, 16:02
I've got the running when falling apart thing down pat. I retired my VW fox at 222K miles for the jetta I have now. I think its a 136K and climbing. its the 'getting it to run perfect' part. If I had a garage and didn't spend all my money on modding, i'd be good.

I figure if I can engine swap the fox, I'm pretty much good to do anything else given the right book. Just afraid to as the jetta is my only vehicle.

Grand Monkey
3rd June 2004, 16:07
yeah there lies the problem and the fear. if its your only vehicle then i'd be scared to tinker to much as well. Engine transplants are cool, i've seen some crazy stuff, in fact me and my mate are currenlty tinkering with the idea of transplanting a new engine into a citreon 2CV dolly :h34r:

Knipex
3rd June 2004, 19:00
Fear is all that holds you back.

Find an old car with a basic engine no electronics just pure mechanical engineering and play with that. Confidence will build.

Starbuck3733T
3rd June 2004, 19:53
How much can be done on a car like that, say... hrm. 1974 Scirroco (carb'd) that doesn't involve tons of money and a garage. I have neither.

Knipex
3rd June 2004, 20:04
As long as you are willing (and have permission ;)) to take over the kitchen, quite a bit.

Seriously I know of 2 guys who rebuilt engines on their kitchen tables. Keep an eye out and you can get parts reground cheap and pick up bits second hand.

Starbuck3733T
3rd June 2004, 20:45
I guess I don't need permission, I'm not married yet (and its therefor my kitchen).

My dad used to put engine parts through dishwasher. Mom hated that.

I'd like to meet your dad Star B)

Yesterday I had to replace lower raditor hose on syncro wagon. Anxious to get it done (as always) I didn't bother changing from khakis and dress shirt into dungy pants/Tshirt. Sure enuf (as *hit) wife comes out....

hear deep sigh.. (I gulp)

"This is why all of your nice cloths get ruined!"

she walks off..

Whats for dinner honey?..... silence

That rocco sounds cool!
