25th May 2004, 21:01
Dont know if this is suposed to be public knowledge yet so I will post it here.
Apparently Custom PC are inviting all the winners of readers drives to take part. According to them its more about promoting modding and sharing tips and experience than anything else.
Anyone got more info ?????
Haven't heard anything yet - unless my spam filter ate it

That sounds cool. You guys think you would go to rep WizD?
If invited, I'd like to hope so. :)
Have to check commitments to kids' visit nearer the time though & suss transport.
Kev - you likely to drive or fly? (Pug hints subtly... ;))
Knipex
27th May 2004, 20:36
They said, and I quote... "I will then send you further information regarding the event logistics including complimentary transport and overnight accommodation."
So I will be flying.......

Got confirmation from Catherine at Custom PC.
All previous winners will be invited. transportation, accomadation, and shipping of the PC will be picked up by organisers.
You can enter a new project or submit the one that won the monthy prize...
Only a month.... I really need to tidy my case or start a new one.....:o
Bloody hell.
Only a month.... I really need to tidy my case or start a new one.....:o
You & me both buddy! *looks out of window at rain that's replaced the glorious sunshine we've been having* Gah, paint's still out then
Soooo... did you mention something about actually modding it whilst there or does it need to be done & dusted?
No time to start a new one I don't think, so I'm gonna hafta tidy the old Hex right up and implement some of the new mods I've been considering for it...
May well slap a whole new w/c loop in there too, dunno yet.
Hmm, yes - mebbe a separate CPU loop (and fix up my AquaPower)...
Hmm, better stop typing my thoughts out loud here or there'll be no surprises in store... :p

I need to be in that magazine, so they can fly me too the UK!
Too bad they'll be paying for 2 airline seats. I'm a big SOB. :h34r:
Just kidding

I have an idea involving lots and lots polished stainless steel and possibly some pneumatics... (been doing some pneumatic circuits at work recently...) time and cash remain the issues but I will look into it some more.

29th May 2004, 03:46
pug, you got mail @ richp @ wizarddesigns.co.uk
Thanks Bill - get me easier at pug @ wizd.co.uk - I only just found that mail. :o
Star - they've definitely restricted it to UK only now. Guess we'll hafta swap houses or something... the grass is always greener, y'know. ;)
Kev - Stainless is out for me. Shame 'cos I had a couple of 2' x 2' sheets at the old place. Just the right thickness for panel-beating too.
Pneumatics - love to see it. Think I could guess where for too (would look shit-hot if I'm right). B)

9th June 2004, 19:47
It is a public event but where in London it will be held I do not know yet.
When I do I will make sure you do :D

Cool, because I want to be there. Hey, we could all meet up! :D

9th June 2004, 21:18
Depends on the size of the event. If it is very large then it is likely to be somewhere like Earls Court.:)
*looks at dust clogging rads & PSUs, wires hanging out and temp sensors spewing everywhere*
Hmm, time for a tidy...
Kev - vanessa's mail addy is still showing through on mouseover.
I'm tempted to edit out the various email addy's dotted about and move this to Gen Dis. Any thoughts, or should we start a new thread?
Could be a good thing to pull the other winners in like Bill suggested before... B)
Knipex
11th June 2004, 20:40
No problems here.
The only reason I posted it in this section was that I didnt know was it public knowledge yet or a big Custom PC secret...
Seeing as all the past winners now know should be OK to move it.
By the way, any changes planned for your rig for the show ??

*looks at dust clogging rads & PSUs, wires hanging out and temp sensors spewing everywhere*
Hmm, time for a tidy...
What's that? Would those be my product? ;) Yes. wires. everywhere. I wish my lines for sensors looked 1/2 as good as Nexxos.
What's that? Would those be my product? ;) Yes. wires. everywhere. I wish my lines for sensors looked 1/2 as good as Nexxos. Actually, no. I was using my Fluke to measure the difference between the top & bottom of my passive northbridge cooler :D (1.7°C to be precise).
However by sheer coincidence, I finally got round to plugging it in last night... 5 new sensors in MBM, woohoo!
Expect a post on it soon - I'll check calibration a bit first but initial impressions = Shit Hot™
[Edit] Ninja outfits back on everyone - moving to the public sector... :h34r:

I cant make the competition unfortunatley as im in japan on the 10th, but my dad is going on my behalf. but im a bit annoyed on missing out on free accomodation. the venue is "in a major, secure external structure attatched to the PC World Megastore on Purley Way Croydon" I didnt have enough time to do a new mod so a bit of tidying the voltmeter is in order.
mrplow
13th June 2004, 15:17
bigZ and I might go down to that cos my housemate kinda won next issues prize :D
It's not naughty for me to say that is it? I don't want him to get done over and you guys are kinda in the know about Custom PC seeing as most of the readers drives winners seem to be here!!
toby
13th June 2004, 15:22
nah you can tell us.whats his comp like?
Aww Toby. Bad case of timing mate.
I was looking forward to seeing your next bit of handiwork too. :(
s'gonna be cool to see a bunch of us get together at last. B)
Tim - I don't even know if we should have posted this but I doubt there's a problem with us publicising a forthcoming event so more people can make plans to be there. :)
toby
13th June 2004, 19:40
Well im guessing its not gonna cause any harm us talking about it because the competition is pretty soon so im guessing they are going to start advertising for itetc. and anyway i want to know what you guys are bringing so i can see who is going to win! with my 1gig cpu im not much of a threat in the speed department
I'm sure my dated hardware would be easily beaten by anything new that anyone brings but I doubt I'd upgrade between now and then just for the speed crown anyway (but then I haven't even heard what's at stake by way of prizes yet).
As far as what I'm taking, it may depend what transport they lay on.
I did keep all the original packaging for all my cases for times such as this, so I could transport them easily but my ex tossed them for me before I could salvage them. <_<
Gotta take Hex, it's part of the roolz (as if I wouldn't :D). I might take my other two main rigs too, my PC-50 & ClearPC.
I wanted to start a new project (like Hex but based on those mini tower versions) but if I'm realistic, there's no time to do that & tidy these ones properly too.

yeh the prizes should be interesting. Im still waiting for my prizes from when i won, i have the hard drive and a64 still to arrive :-(
Knipex
13th June 2004, 23:00
I was hopeing to build a new case but they insist on bringing the winning case and I have alot of work to do on that to get it ready.
I am working on a new front bezel and lockind system. (what was on it was allways supposed to be temporary). I see solenoid locking system and a custom stainless bezel coming here.
Speed crowon is going to be one by a strongly overclocked P4 so I am not even going to worry about that. (I wonder are they inviting any of the Beat the Office crowd ??)
mrplow
14th June 2004, 14:15
There's some kind of speed compo? If biggles pulled his finger out he could probably do something pretty good with an fx53/x800/prommy effort!

well i would have thought it was open to the public, otherwise id hate to think it was 12 cpc winners and a few people from pcworld in a huge hall

Well, if it's just 12 winners etc. I'll just tell them all individually.
I may put a little WizD.co.uk moniker somewhere on Hex though (in my best attempt at subtle marketing :D ).

Catherine is good people. Its the prize donors that F*&K her over as well as us. Just pop her a reminder e-mail and she will follow it up.
EDIT: I was just thinking. They send you a form to fill out and one of the questions was
Each table will be covered and can name branded. Please confirm what name/branding you would like to appear on the cover:

Hehe, I'll probably just take a marker pen & scrawl "WizDforums roolz ok" on mine. :D
I'm not quite sure what they mean by branding but I'd guess they mean AMD/Intel/nVidia/ATi rather than personal representation... besides, I'm going as a modder, not a cooling shop. :p

Minehead has it, Wiliton has it, even Washford has it and you can go through Washford and not notice FFS, but as Carhampton is connected to the Dunster exchange, and Dunster and Carhampton aren't exactly populated by the technologically clued up (read full of old farts who think television is the work of Satan) we have to wait  :(
We need 250 people registering interest, and I think we're on about 61 or something :(

Im running completely stock. The MSI board and the Athlon 64 dont really overclock well so its running completely stock at the moment. My 9800pro is causing me enough problems at stock so I am not even going to consider overclocking it untill I get the replacement.
I hadn't even considered the speed king competition untill you guys started talking about it.. Hmmmmmmm I might have a chance if I can get a stable overclock out of the 9800....

This was in my inbox this morning...
PC World Component Centre and Custom PC Magazine together invite you to Modfest 2004, the essential event for all PC performance hardware & customisation.

See tomorrow’s technology today: Experience the next generation of PC hardware from Intel, AMD, Nvidia, DFI, Cooler Master, MSI, Jeantech and more.

Speed PC Building: Have a go and win great prizes!
Finally, watch-out for the fantastic one-day only offers on selected PC upgrades and modding products in the PC World Component Centre - first choice for all your PC modding needs.
And of course, there will be the odd suprise too... See you there!
I guess by the odd surprise bit at the end they know Knipex is coming! :p
If they have invited all the readers drives winners along then i wonder if the beat the office PC boys are also invited?
" Anyone bringing a hub and a few network cables ??? Might as well get some gaming in...."
My rigs are going to the event and then home I think (seperate to me). I'll be on the train so count me out, unfortunately.
Speed PC building? Might have to give that a go.
Wonder if they'll make you where an anti-static strap? I can imagine being disqualified for frazzling their RAM otherwise!

Right so... I'm actually travelling down in the morning now
I forgot that tonight is the grad ball at uni and I'd asked them to gizza job working it... that means 7pm until about... 7am! So I'll get the first train down to London (a well deserved hour and a halfs kip! Urk!) and then fight my way to chavtown (Croydon).
I'll try and get a daft looking picture of Pug for ya mnpc :D
I'm sure he'll be easy to find... the one underneath a massive WIZD banner, with adverts and posters all over himself :D
Hopefully the next time they hold this (next year? If it goes well) I'll be able to make it there and take a look around, meet a few people. Might actually be able to drive meself then! ^_^
Actually, if all goes to plan, I might be working at HP Invent in Bristol for a year, so I'll see if they're interested in selling some modded-cases and I can go and do some "research" ;) :D
I'll try and get a daft looking picture of Pug for ya mnpc :D

Here's looking forwards to next years' event, lets just hope they advertise it a little better than this year. We didn't get a press release until the thursday, so by that time many people don't have the time to make arrangements for coming down to the event. I'm in the progress of putting forward plans to get together some of the case mods featured on bit-tech for a stand at next years event.
it was good to meet you guys down there B)
It's always nice to put faces to names! Nice to meet Knipex, Pug and fivecheebs - I'm sorry that I forgot to say bye to you guys before everyone finished... I got a bit busy doing business with Abit and MSI

Next year's event is gonna rock bells if your plans come thru too. :h34r:
Great to meet you all. Wish we'd had more time (and less stress) to be able to get some more lengthy chatting in. :sigh:
PS. Fivecheebs, I found the tube of AS5 I brought for you when I went to pack back up... sorry. :o
