View Full Version : Why 56K Beware Threads?

Please explain to me why some of you post "56K Beware" threads. I follow your advice and avoid them, but I just can't figure out why anyone would post images so large that they become unfriendly to some of us.
Is it an inability to properly crop pictures?
Is it that the subject matter's detail is so important to the readers you need tabloid size pictures?
Please explain, because I simply don't get it. :duh:

It may not be so much as inappropriately cropped images, though there are those who are definitely guilty of that, but a thread full of so many '56k edible' images that the thread as a whole becomes obnoxiously large for those on dialup... at least that's when I mark my thread titles with the 56k beware or some variation thereof.

i think threads witch include a lot of largish sized images might not be 56k friendly. i think it might have to do with the fact that some of us are just crappy photogrophers and need large images to see what the hell is going on.

It might not even be the size of the pic, it might be the number of the pics. I remember reading tribs threadback at bit-tech and each page toke like a min to lad because there was so many pics. I have high speed internet. 3mb/s

Actualy I have been triming all the fat off the pictures I post. For two main reasons really. First is that there are still people on dial up and broadband does not make the "man" so to speak. And secondlty earthlink starts bitching at me when I pass monthly allowed bandwidth rates.

I agree with you dutchie ... If you need the resolution whats hard about hosting a thumbnail and using it as a link to the larger pic. It makes threads alot easier to read too if they are thumbnailed.
Be 56k friendly dudes :thumb:

Thanks jaguar (and yah, I've noticed... :thumb:)
Maybe I misunderstand some of the warnings, because, in my mind at least, a lot of properly sized pictures doesn't mean a 56k warning is in order. Heck, I've got one of the most picture heavy threads in the forum, but haven't thought of it as one that needs a warning.
I've adopted a 6-5-4 rule for myself. 600 pixels wide for "glory shots", 500 pixels wide for regular schtuff and 400 pixels wide for detail schtuff. Every picture gets chopped before it gets sized, then I tweak the brightness and contrast if my lighting sucks (quite often). Sometimes I'll post a little wider, but only when two shots are put together.
Don't get me wrong here... those are only rules I put on myself... its not as if I'm trying to push them on anyone else. I just love to see what people have done around here, but when the threads aren't 56k friendly, I avoid them and think its a shame. Its the price us mountain folk pay for living in the "backwoods"... so thanks to everyone that thinks about us... :wiz:
By the way... rumour has it that broadband may come up our mountain next year... never would have thought new wires on the telephone poles would get me excited, but it does. :D

I appreciate the 56k warning.
Dutch your post is full of pics and while not bad it is slow. When I had broadband I used to check it a couple of times a day now I leave it to once a week. I dont have the free time I used to have anymore and am kucky to get a couple of hours a week on the web. Everytime I log on to wizd i get 3 to 8 pages of new posts and I just cannot read them all so I gotta pick and choose. Tjhe waiting time just kills my online time.

I don't know, I'm on 56K at home and I still read every new post, pics and all. It's just worth it to me and I'm used to it being slow. Try reading all of project blackout on 56K and you'll know my patience level.
