View Full Version : Loud Pump

Back info:

I took my case home 5 weeks ago empty of water, then refilled the system. Everything was fine. I then moved it back here to Uni 3 weeks later and was happy to find no leaks of any kind. I ran the system and all was good.

Then suddenly, after leaving it on one night, the pump started making a loud noise as it would when air is in the system. This was several days after I got back, and the system had been sitting comfortably on the floor not moving or leaking!

So each time I turn the machine off now I have to turn the power off at the wall as well, because the pump is too loud to sleep near.
I've just been on the phone, and when I got off it had increased in volume - this occurs quite frequently - it starts off nice and quiet and then some days gets too loud to sit next to comfortably (like today) or stays at a hum - sometimes it's almost silent.

I've tipped the case up on its back and tried to bleed out any air that may still be in the system for a few hours but STILL no joy!

Can anybody suggest what might be going wrong, because this is really annoying :(

Is it like a clattering noise or an amplified hum?
Any chance that it ran for a time with air in it or perhaps that any foreign matter could have got in?

Definately a clattering noise.
There's no chance of a foreign object (unless something has come away from inside the radiator, but I think that's highly unlikely!

I thought that maybe one of the connections was loose and some air was getting in that way, but they're all fine. That's what I don't understand - one day it was running fine and all of a sudden one night it started making noises and hasn't stopped since.

Since its more of a clattering its probably not bearing noise from your pump motor.

I've seen cases of additive buildup making crap in the impellar of your pump that could clatter around and make that kinda noise. not sure why it would go away though. I'd definitly open the pump up though!

Very odd, yesterday whilst the machine was running I totally unplugged the pump for a couple of seconds, plugged it back in and the noise was gone! So I rejoiced ... then this morning it was back again but has since quietened down a bit.

I'm definately going to open it up and see what's going on, but I'll have to wait for another couple of weeks until I get back home (it's too much of a hassle messing around with watercooling in this room!)

Sounds like the impeller shaft has come unstuckified. Get some adhesive on it if it has, my mate did this on his Eheim and it ran better than it did in the first place!

Hmm, I'll wait till you disassemble it but before you go gluing, bear in mind I do uprated impellors for these if it's worn or damaged...

Just to check, you're going res -> pump and the pump has inlet uppermost (normal orientation) yes?

Edd

Uh oh ... I may end up looking TOTALLY foolish here ...

My setup is:

Res -> Pump (Intake = Side inlet) -> VGA block (Output from pump = top of pump) -> CPU block -> Rad -> Res

 Oops, no... colour me foolish. I meant outlet. :o

Edd

Thank gawd for that :D
I'll get the pump opened up as soon as I get home ... got to find a flippin house in Manchester for next year first though

I could really do with watercooling the northbridge too, they get mighty toasty on the A7N8X boards, though I think I'll leave that for now.

I was thinking the same after I nearly burnt myself on mine a few days ago. Serious lack of money is holding me back at the moment. Might have to settle with lapping the heatsink and putting it back on with some Arctic Silver.

Yeah money is an issue here too. I've got a few objects on my shopping list that are prioritised (TFT, car insurance), but once I start looking at small things everything suddenly mounts up like crazy. Perhaps towards the end of summer ...

<RANT> AGH. Good god the noise is starting to drive me insane

Did you not check inside yet? I wouldn't use it if it's getting worse...

Edd

I'm gonna have to empty the system out first yeah?
I was looking to avoid doing that here, because finding someplace to work on the system is bad enough in this flat, let alone emptying/refilling :(

I'd just turn the system off, but I need to use it for email and house hunting. Left the old heatsinks that I took off back at home so I can't even go back to aircooled for the time being.

Bugger. Wish I could help somehow. :(

Edd
26th May 2004, 20:32
The knowledge of what to look for is help enough :)

It's fine as long as I listen to music to drown it out ... but there are times when you just need a bit of silence to work and ... well, that's where the problems start. It was fine this morning but soon rose to a loud and angry clattering noise in about 30 minutes :(

Flow's still up though right? (I assume so if it's running this long)

Any bubbles in the loop or anything else untoward or is it just this noise?

Edd
27th May 2004, 14:42
The flow doesn't seem to have dropped off at all. I can't see any evidence of air bubbles or air pockets either. The first time this happened I turned the machine up on its back and took the top off the Aquatube to let the pump run for a while to see if there was any air to be cleared, but the noise persisted.

I was reading on procooling (I think) that the ehiems have a 'limited slip' impellar. it allows the impellar to slip a bit when its starting up, so tha the pump can build pressure and speed up w\o torquing the living crap out the shaft.

The clattering is probably the impellar slipping, this goes back to what pyshcotic said about gluing the impellar to the shaft. I'd use 'goop' personally, but I love that stuff :)

The clattering is probably constant because once the thing slips, it won't relock at full speed. there may be wear on your pump's shaft and one of the 'ears' that the impellar grips has worn down. should be an easy fix to either glue it or replace the shaft.

Gluing?!! Come on guys... this is WizD. Do it properly!

How much does one of those things go for?

fillip

So the actual difference, or 'mod' if you will is...??

Edd
27th May 2004, 20:59
The modded one has the extra "teeth", so if one happens to break/wear down it won't do what mine is currently doing now.

Thought it was sumthing like that, thanks.

Umm, six & 1/2 quid, I think.
Tell you what, 10% discount if you bought the pump from me, are an active forum member and remind me when you order. ;)

Fillip - it's also less likely to slip in the first place.
If you think about it, it gives it less of a chance to "get a run up" at the teeth too (if you get my drift).

Ideally, I'd do it as a standard WizD upgrade on all the Eheims I sell but I don't think everyone would wear the extra cost happily when 8 or 9 times out of 10 the standard impellor suffices.

I think i'd pay it for the pice of mind. When you think aout how the impellor grips, the standard 'teeth' start to look a little insufficient. As far as i see it, may aswell illiminate all possibility of slipping using the modded version.

Think i may be interested when i get the cash for my kit.

p.s. Do you think i post enough to count as an active forum member??

Pug, you are a demi-god :D
Should be good to have a real dig through the online shop once it's all open to see what extra goodies there are!
