I'm looking at buying a step drill bit and i'm looking for some opinions. Do you think this one (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HSS-TITANIUM-STEP-DRILL-4MM-TO-22MM-CAP_W0QQitemZ7554062347QQcategoryZ92083QQrdZ1QQcmd ZViewItem)on ebay will do the job or should i pay the extra and go for the sealey one here (http://www.ccw-tools.co.uk/catalogue/product.asp?prod_id=4526&cat_id=159)?

I would go for the cheeper one and see how I liked this kind of bit, then if it lasts then thats a bonus if it dosent and I liked it I would buy a more expensive one. I have seen steper bits go as high as 60bux around here and as cheep as 5bux from the rite places. All it indicates is quality and long term usability. usualy with tools the general rule of thumb (besides not drilling through the thumb like I did) is that the more expensive the higher the quality as is with most things. But mind you there are always exeptions.

If it's something I'm hoping to get a few years use from, I'll buy the more reputable brand every time.

£11.10 against £17.29 - a £6 difference? - I'd go with the Sealy one.

Thing is i'm only going to be drilling about 4 holes with the thing and this mod, despite my best efforts, is getting expensive quickly which wont please the:wife: If it was something i would use all the time then it would be a no brainer. Anyone know if silverline stuff is any good or should it be avoided?

i'd just go cheap for the time being. Gotta keep the ole' lady happy. You know the old sayin: if momma/the wife aint happy, aint noobody happy.

Mebbe you'll need it again for the next mod? :naughty:

FWIW - I hear the Silverline worktop router jigs are best avoided.

There is no substitute for quality,

Why a step drill BTW and not an ordinary HSS bit ?

If thats the case OC i'll go with the sealey its only £6 after all. GU i dont have many holes to drill but they will be of various sizes so buying the apporpriate HHS hole cutters worksd out the same as the step bit.

I went for the "cone cut" much like this set (http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?cId=101703&ts=38358&id=45562) which has been succesfull so far.

i think the cheaper one would be ok if that isnt all you are planning to use it for is just four holes and i think u would get way more then four holes out of it i am sure

he he i used the sealey step bit for the last time last night and its fanstastic! It went through the alu way faster and cleaner then i expected it too. Nealry drilled a much bigger hole than i needed too. I had been warned that in alu it would catch and kick badly but i didn't have any problems at all.

after the bit that i use in my dremel wore out i bought a set of titanium coated bits from wall mart. I like em.

Now i need to get a step bit...
