View Full Version : Power Supply modding
Im hoping to mesh my power supply and change the fan but before i do it i was wondering if there is anything i should not touch in the power supply, im pretty sure it can hold a charge for several days after being used in the capacitators and i dont want to be fried so has anyone got any tips and techniques on psu modding they could share with me?

Plug out you PC.
Press the power on button, (notice all the fans start to spin) Now you PSU is dead. If your nervous leave it overnight but you should be fine.
good tip i will definetly try it.

The high voltage side (the dangerous bits) can still hold voltage for a pretty long time. Rule of thumb with PSUs is don't touch anything you dont have to!
But, what I do is to take a rubber-handled screwdriver after letting the PSU sit a few hours after doing the unplug-poweron described above, and short the PSU mains connectors, and short any large caps.
Also, ALWAYS work with ONE HAND whenever possible inside a PSU. If you don't let the electricity go across your heart, you'll drastically lower your chances of getting hurt or killed.
That said, I'm an EE. I'm crazy, so here are pictures of my PSU in varying stages of completition (See the project goliath thread in chopshop for more)
