hi guys, i really have thrown myslef in at the deep end here. i have never used watercooling beofre, and i thaught it would be good fun to kit my pc up. i got this lot for £80:
dangerden maze4 cpu
dangerden maze3 northbridge
dangerden maze4 gpu
dangerden inline res
dangerden bay res
black ice pro rad
2 120mm alaska fans
eheim 1048 pump
do you think thats a good price?
anyways, i have a MSI socket A board, and it donst have the 4 mounting holes. the bloke was meant to send me all maze 3 stuff, and that is samller and would fit a socket A clamp i was going to make here: http://www.overclockers.com/tips192/ , but the maze4 is slightly larger and doesnt fit that clamp.
does anyone have any suggestions?
also any tips or things that could help me install this system would be bloody wonderfull, as i really dont have much of a clue what im doing.
also is it ok to use food colouring as a dye in watercooling systems?
thanks

Welcome to WizD
£80 is a good deal. Well done.
As for mounting, im sure you can buy mounting kits that just include a clamp or a replacement top. If not make your own top. I have never used food colouring as a dye so i cant comment.

Yup, you need a Maze4 SHD (socket hold down) like this (http://www.dangerden.com/images/MAZE4/shd_lg.jpg).

That's a way better block than the maze4 CPU, buy several degrees in procooling's tests. What's the hold down setup for that?

Ideally, if you're keeping a rad there permanently, you'll get better performance if you can cut out the obstruction formed by the lower part of the HDD cage.
A few choice dremel slices to remove the metal should net you a few more degrees fairly easily.
also is it ok to use food colouring as a dye in watercooling systems? Hard to say.
I would personally mix some up with some water and leave it in a glass or jar for a week to see if it comes out of solution.
Rather see it on the glass than gumming up your pump, eh? :magic:

Make sure you cover the container with plastic wrap or some such... I grow all sorts of "bugs" in sitting open water.

just got me 8ft of tygon!! only 14 quid deliverd.
i was having a think, would it be better to mount the rad on the outside, most likely on the bak. will this make any diffence to temps? i thaught it would, because of hot air going out and shit.... i was also thinking of shoving a passive rad on top. most probable a XSPC Passive Aluminium Reservoir.
i think it would look good, especially the blue one.

I suspect thats the thin walled stuff. Be careful of kinks mate.
As for where to mount the rad, most people believe its best mounted at front drawing cold, external, air across it. If you have sufficient airflow in the case it wont heat up case temps significantly, but it will a bit. You could mount it on the back but you would be pushing warm air over it resulting in slightly worse performance from the rad.
As pug says though, make sure it has room to breathe both infront and behind the rad irrespective of where you put it.

I would not use food coloring on water. It is designed to breack down and eventualy will become a stain problem on your loop. In the early days I saw a guy put loots of red food coolring to get a blood red color but after a fiew months the color turned brown and the tubes were stained. Moral of the story. Just use correct aditives and leave well enough alone.

crappy stuff
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/cobalt6700/DSC01172.jpg
spanky new tygon
is this the thin walled stuff? its with the tube i was going to use, and the tygon feels much better, plus doesnt kink very easily, as you can see.
im going with rad at the back i think. its just toooo squashed in the front. ive got a air temp probe and a flow meter so ill meaure it up and look at the differnce.
what do you think of the passive rad?
thanks for the tips!

wooo yey!
lol
anyways, i wasnt planning on going TOTALLY passive, i was going for a passive res on top of case, and my black ice rad, but just run the fan really slow, im going to watercooilg cos of the loudness of my pc. plus its sounded like fun, and it is!
plus it got me to this place....and this place is the best!
plus this forum has made me more confident towards modding and ill be drilling holes in my case soon (thats a big step, you should of seen the window mod i tried on the last case :o) (it really is that shit) you can have some pics to laugh at if you want, but i was only 14.
i cant say enough to say how good this forum is  but in the few weeks ive been on hee ive learnt loads.

bit crapmed in me case as you can see,. thats why i need a case from a vapochill LS. if i fail to get one i will be building a case like it.
gives me an excuse to spend more money, and to get a LCD. plus it will look cool, and i can have 2 120 rad instead of 1. woo! cant wait! :D

I think it looks pretty cool anyway :thumb:
For the box, you could find a cheap case and cut it down to size. Are the Vapochill ones solid enough to hold the piece sin or are they dependant on having the chiller inside?

firstly, im going to look an ebuyer, what a brilliant idea. you can get a shitty case for like 20 quid.
secondly i dont know, i wouldnt think they would put weight on a chiller
thridly, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA YAHOOOO, i got it working btw, im on it now!!!! IM SOOO PLEASED!!! i riged it up just to play. cpu temp, 33, mobo 31!!! before when i had air it was 54, 40, idle, my god thats 20 for the cpu and 10 for the mobo, how coooooooool is that!
*goes dancing round the house*
yey again! :D:D:D:D:D
