I have a bulgin vandal switch (with a green lighted ring), has anyone ever attempted to paint these. Is there a special method to it? I need it to be black to match the rest of my design. Any help would be much appreciated!

Welcome to WizD
I am no expert with painting, but i suspect careful masking and a self etching primer should sort it out before putting any colour on. Im sure someone more knowledgeable will come along and give more details.

I covered the switch and washer w/ masking tape, then cut along the outside edge of the light ring w/ exacto knife. So now you have inner push button portion covered with tape... I then sanded the exposed alum w/ 400 grit sandpaper. In your case, I would then apply "Self Etching Primer" after sanding it for good adhesion to the stainless steel before applying the black paint, otherwise it will chip easily!.. I also suggest an Enamel paint, versus Laquer for better resistance against chipping.
For my switch, I applied Duplicolor Metalcast Red, this paint doesn't require a primer, but can chip easily so I applied a clearcoat over it. I also added 2" washer to give you the illusion of a larger Bulgin switch.

Speaking of Bulgin switchs,
I'm developing (1, 2, 3, pot) aluminum switch panels for Bulgin switchs (http://mnpctechcom.temp.powweb.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=274&cat=555).. I hope to have them available by this fall :thumb:

Thanks very much Bill, I will probably try to do that tomorrow or so. Working on a nice case, and I've been taking pics but I don't get a lot of time to post. I've been reading through these worklogs for over a year now, and I would like to thank everyone (especially Bill) for inspiration, thoughts, and howtos.
BTW, anyone tried the House of Kolors in rattle cans? :thumb: WOW, picked up some at wally world and they are wicked, a bit pricey for rattle cans but well worth it! Bill I'm loving the Pro line your making up, they are looking very sweet, I'm trying to figure out where I can use them in my next case.
Thanks again

HOK in aerosol cans? Please post a photo or product link. I've never seen it in HOK's online store

Well, the HOK sprays are not anywhere to be found online, I found them in Wal-Mart. They are Shimrins Kandys and Pearls. I've used the Kandys (Organic Green and Purple). Both came out very nice, but I was using a low tack vinyl as a painting mask and it doesn't not like this type of paint, I think it must have a reaction.

Three steps, like the chameleon colors.

Here are the Kandy Kolors.

This is a sample of the green, photos do not show the effect quite as good as real life.
Once again, I picked the up at Wal-Mart
Base coat around $6, Color coat arount $10, Clear coat around $6.
I like them, I just have to find a way around using vinyl as a paint mask as I was going to do a biohazard sign on top of my case in the green.
Enjoy, hopefully soon I will get a chance to do the bulgin switch.
Thanks,
XinMan

http://prudhoe.codeword.com/mnpctech/aWIZB/JonK.jpgYa gotta love runnin' into the originators and shakers of the hot rod / custom car culture. Isn't it true that he's probably done more for custom paint than anyone else? :thumb:
Now that guy on the left... all hope is lost... :wiz:
