View Full Version : Intsallation of RAD in Lian Li PC71

I am looking to install an Aquacomputer based watercooling set up in My PC and have a few questions.
Case is a nice large Lian Li PC71 case. I am looking at two different internal Aquacomputer Radiator options:-
1. the 160 RAD in the space above my PSU which has mountings (unfilled) for two 80mm fans. Would include two fans pushing air over the radiator
a) Would this have sufficent cooling potential to cope with a (not heavily overclocked ) FX 53 and twin 7800Gt in SLI system?
b) Is it best to blow cool air in over the radiator or air out from the case over the radiator?
2. Secondly and more tricky. The PC71 is a nice big case and looks like it could handle an internally mounted 360 rad hanging off the top of the case inside :dremel: again with 3 120mm fans blowing air out over the radiator through a hole to be cut into the top of the case hope that makes sense!
a) Does this make sense for a radiator position.
b) I am planning on a Aquabay installation with the pump mounted on the back of the Aquabay in my top two 5.25 external bays. Now this will restrict space at the top of the case. Anybody no (or able to measure ?) the total clear space I would need at the top of the case for this combination or would I be better putting the Aquabay in lower 5.25 bays leaving more space for the rad if that is necessary
Cheers
Ralph

Hey Ralph welcome to WizD why not head (http://www.wizdforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2185) over here and introduce yourself. :magic:
As for your questions you have definitely come to the right place...I'm pretty sure you'll be able to cool your kit ok with a 160 IIRC Nexxo is cooling his Dual opteron/GPU on a single Black Ice rad so you should be fine (check out Project :Metaversa (http://www.wizdforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=87) for more info)
As for whether you'll fit it all in I can't really help you, but you should be able to get the rad dimensions here (http://www.wizdforums.co.uk/showthread.php?postid=7770#poststop)
More to the point I'm sure someone will be along shortly to give you some real advice ^_^

Are you planning on cooling your FX53 and 7800GT on just the 160 Rad? I think you're pushing it a little if you are and it certainly wont help with the noise levels as you'll be using 80mm fans. Personnally, as you have a nice big case, I don't see the point in having a rad that uses 80mm fans. Nexxo was using a BIX 120mm and it has optimal airflow through it and his case, so I'd definately suggest you go with a better rad. An AC Airplex 240 might do it, but if you can fit it, a 360 should definately do the trick.

Hell no, I'm not qualified for this stuff, the above is just my humble opinion based on the amount of w/c projects I've read through and time spent looking at what is achievable with certain w/c hardware. I'm yet to actually watercool a computer :h34r:, so wait until someone backs me up or blows me out of the water*. lol. http://wizdforums.co.uk/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Thanks for the info guys , I am off to do some measuring but it looks a tight fit for the 360 but easily accomodating the 240. I will return and introduce myself properly.

A 240 rad will fit easily in the top, infact a 360 will fit easily too. A 360 isn't really neccessary so it's up to you what to get. :thumb:

The 360 will fit on its own at the top of the PC 71 but I am concerned if I have an Aquabay + pump combination in the top two 5.25 bays will it then leave sufficient room for a 360?
Thoughts?

As darv and myself have both said, a 240mm will probably do the job with good airflow. http://wizdforums.co.uk/images/smilies/thumb.gif

IMO stay clear of rads that use 80mm fans. I dont see the point, especially if you have the room for more.
Both the 240 or the 360 would work fine. I might look towards a BIXii if it were me.

Ahh, you would lose at least the first bay down with a 360. 240 seems like the better choice then :thumb:

Sounds like the plan, now to start ordering. I will return once the work is underway!!

An SLI'd 7800 GT setup is about 120 Watts. The FX-53 will be about 110 Watts. So you're looking at cooling 230 Watts. A BIX can still manage that. A BIX2 will be more than sufficient for your needs.

Well the blow hole for a 240 Rad and 2* 120mm fans has now been cut in the top of my case so let battle commence.
Seriously thanks for the advice , I will return as soon as something goes wrong!!

Well a wee tatser to show willing and thanks for the advice. I will start a thread showing the work but it will have to wait a week while I fix my other PC as I will get shot by SWMBO if we have no PC working whilst I do this.
So anyway, here is the top panel all cut and waiting for the radiator :toast:
