heh! thats a good idea! on another note has anyone looked at the specs of the Beat the office machine that tops the charts now? The guy is complaining cos they changed the prize, cos he has spent so much money on his machine. Looking at the specs of his pc i'd say its well over four grands worth of machine! :o

The BTO machine is immense. Although I really can't see why you'd want it THAT fast.
Plus it doesn't look like it'd be any good for a LAN!
However I do like what they did with the mesh on the case. I may do that to mine if the LCD mod doesn't play out right.

It would be better IMO to reward people who achieved an impressive overclock, or performance boost from more modest hardware as opposed to someone who took their 3.2 P4 to 3.6.
Now that my friend, is a far better idea!!!
For a start, Custompc has the financial weight of it's publishers behind them, not like many of the staff who work for them could afford to actually build a beast like that out of their own wages so it seems a little harsh in the first place.
If anyone does beat it, then they would only be rewarding the rich anyway sinc eit would take some serious mullah to build a P.C. to beat theirs.
Rewarding ingenuity and invention is a far better idea.

i'm in agreement with you rude baboon. that guy just throws money at the problem and i don't think thats the spirit of overclocking IMO. Seen a nice idea at driverheaven.com forums, they run a graded overclock comp,
Super Modified: This class is for computers on the extreme edge of over clocking. It includes ALL sponsored computers, volt mods, water-cooling, peltier, Prometia, Vaporchill, and anything else on the extreme edge of Enthusiast Over clocking.
Pro Stock: All Athlon 64 and Intel P4 3.2 GHz and above, on air cooling, no extensive mods, no volt mods, or extreme cooling solutions allowed.
Stock: All AMD Athlon XP and Intel P4 up to 3.2Ghz, on air cooling, no volt mods, no extensive mods, changing the NB chipset cooling solution is allowed as long as it is with a passive or fan solution that is mounted in the stock location, and is stock appearing.

Star - I saw that bschott had entered Christine.
Dunno if there was anything specified to exclude international entries or not tbh (tho' I'd imagine so).
Otherwise, of course Goliath'd be worth entering... it's a CustomPC after all. A lot of their entries are based around pre-mods and bolt-ons, they love to get entries that have had a modder's blood, sweat & tears poured into them.
Knipex - good choices, I'd have made much the same I guess. Didn't realise the AiW SE was such a pricey card though.
Can't see me entering the Beat the Office PC compo meself (although I'm tempted to have another go at Readers' Drives again in the future... :naughty: ).
GM - that looks like a nice category breakdown but I'd have dropped the stock section in favour of a modified in between the Pro & super-mods, rather than lumping water in with LN2 & phase change.

Amen to that (and the challenge!! B) :D).

Yeah, i thought the same - compared to phase change water seems a little out of it's depths. It's also a sompletely different cooling concept in the first place.
On with the challenge then!!! Muhahaha

i agree with you pug, but i don't have any say over at driverheaven, was just showing an example of what could be done, it would be cool to have our own little comp over here though. though i think the watercooled section would be the most popular :p

Sure - I didn't mean that you should change it, I was just opining. :)
I'd love to do a compo - I've had the seed of one in mind for some time and even arranged a fair few things towards it. Couldn't afford to do anything regular, just the occasional one now & again but I was hoping to have one in hand for a launch publicity drive - now I'm thinking that as modding/painting weather is on its way, the delay hasn't been so bad and we could have some really good entries when the time's right. A competition would be a good idea Pug but in the rules you would have to state that the competition isn't open to employees of Wizd, family members and friends of wizd employees and people who hang out on the forums all day lol. :p
Back the BTO PC. As they ignored my letter i think we should lobby them for a handicap system. ;) I would suggest you write your own letters or emails but if you got yours published i wouldnt be very pleased! :o

Well the point has been raised on the custompc forums (which i do not recommend anyone to visit!), and it was pretty much ignored and of course the guy at the top of the board (Dale Bickerdyke) viewed his opinion quite strongly that he didn't want it changed.

On the BTO thing i've gotta agree - it's not a competion about Overclocking skill it's all about the money <_<
Why not just take it to the logical conclusion and let this (http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20031230/) enter and be done with it....
Erm, I was thinking more along the lines of a modding compo rather than an overclocking one but I'm still receptive to the idea for the future. :)

yeah i assumed you were talking about a modding comp pug, i just thought of setting up a benchmarking one for fun. no prizes or anything just for the hell of it. be interesting to see what other peoples rigs run like thats all. sorry.
No need to apologise - it's a great idea. I got the wrong end of the stick 'cos I'd been giving a lot of thought to a prize compo idea for a while.
Don't mind me, I'll just get me coat... :D
