I was pissed to hear that it was possible for vw to cancel the motor debute in the US. But have confirmed it and pissed me off. I was looking forward to seeing the performance of this diesel.
It was suposed to be 6L v12 diesel that sports better fuel economy than most midsize cars and more tourque than anyone would know what to do with.
What gets me is that they blame epa requirements for the motor. And as far as diesel is concerned it is tru that US laws are extremly strict but the motor should have passed. Sounds like audi/vw are screwing around.
This motor would have been the first step in my dream of an exotic diesel road car. I could imagine a high geared transaxle mated to something that produces 600-700lb of tourque and still manages close to 30mpg and has a life expectency of over 1/2million miles and still be able to hit 200mph easily.
these actions get me angry.
Existing diesels are not tuned for the high rpm and response needed for a sport car let alone an exotic. That v12 diesel could have been a gr8 starting point as a test bed.
Well any thoughts on this besides the universal response of (you dont need 6L worth of displacement) Any thoughts would be nice. Share pls.

600lbs at what RPM? thats awsome!
the only diesel ive ridden in was a diesel turbo A6, soooo fun to launch.

The v12 if properly tuned could have possibly put out 600lb of tourque at less than 4000rpm with probly a rev limiter of 6500-7000rpm if properly balanced. The thing about diesels is that the tourque line is mutch flater than the gasoline counterparts so lounching this thing would not gain you mutch as power could be instant with geometric turbos helping this beast breathe. I figure about 20lb of boost per turbo with a split intake and high pressure comonrail could have put out more than enough hp and more importantly tourque to sadisfy exotic needs. Only downside is that diesels are usualy cast iron, witch is good for durability and power but bad in the weight department as it could make the car slugish around corners, but like I said b4 a transaxle could be used the balance of the car could be brought to almost 50/50 if the engine is mounted mid rear.
Dam I am still dreaming of a day of diesel production exotic.

I passed a Mercedes S 600 on my way to work this morning; it was marked "V12".

It won't do 600 lb at <4000 rpm though.
Whatever happened to the Jaguar XJ12 anyways?

Hmm, one wonders what the true reasons are... They may be strategizing something.. It would definately sell here.

It sounds like another deal with porsche. It was a while back that porsche made a deal with audi/vw to keep porsche top end lmp prototype out of 24 hours at lemans for a trade with an suv (porsche cayene anyone?) they could market. THe porsche was rumored to bring the bar of performance way high and the audis/bently prototypes would be disimated. Its possible that porsche is keeping them under wraps especialy since the v12 toureg was sceduled to cost 65k fully loaded thus rendering the cayene useless. especialy since the cayene is a tourger but more primitive....Only compettiton is the mutch hated H2 witch is actualy a better suv and more off road worthy than the cayene. A loosing demographic I would say in the favor of the h2 versus the cayene.
And ben v12 is not the main part that got me its the diesel v12 part. A v12 has been done time and time again but a diesel v12 thats also very large 6L is something very rare.
Seems to me that audi is up to their dirty tricks.

^^^ Shades of Pontiac keeping the Fiero dumbed down to keep the 'Vette on top. eh?

Agree dutch... all about status with rich consumers.
I've driven a Fiero GT, awesome little car.

^^^ I really thought GM was onto something with the Fiero, especially with the V6. I remember it was even starting a whole new interest in road racing and a nationwide series using it exclusively was on the horizon.
Commuter car, my arse.
Now its relegated to kit car chassis fame... what a waste.

The fiero was a awsome car for shure. Especialy since it had enough room to fit a full fledged 350 small block and become a killer. But for its time the fiero was awsome. Dont think it sold too well though. Lets hope the new gto dosent go the same way as the fiero as that would piss me off and im shure others as well. Also another neglected car that had lots of potential, the second gen ford probe gt. Its only flaw was that it was a frond weel drive car. Ford should have used the miata axle and gearbox on the probe gt, but it was also a very well performing car, too bad it was threatenening the mustang that strangely enough the probe was designed to replace the mustang. Automotive companies sometimes make no sense. Ah well the world of bussiness.
