I was just wondering if anyone on these forums has ever had a dabble in making their own water blocks for a w/c setup? It's something i'm gonna give a try in the coming months to see 1) how easy/difficult it is 2) what the sort of costs are and 3) how effective it is compared to commercial blocks.

So, if anyone has any experience and feedback to give, i'd like to hear it, just as i'd like opinions of anyone else regardless as to their experience with water cooled equipment.

I'm in the midst of making a 1/2" ID HDD block. It's been a pain in the ass and hasn't progressed well (damn I need a stationary belt/disc sander) so I haven't been posting the progress.

well, come the summer break i'll be getting a basic pillar drill and a plumbers torch so i can start making...

- a CPU block for a second rig i'll be taking to uni next year (I'm getting a cuplex evo for main rig)

- a couple of hard drive coolers similiar to the heattrap/silentstar design

- a block to stick in my enermax psu to make it silent B)

- mosfet coolers

- and a GPU block for a radeon 9800 pro (only a 50/50 - may buy one to be on safe side)

I have two radical block designs on the drawing board but would like to put them into production in the long run, so I have to be careful what I disclose at this stage...
Shame but we all know the way the world is. *sigh*

Yeah i know what you mean, once it's on the forums it aint yours no more.
Aslong as you get yer patent sorted first you'll be ok.

Good thing your not a student @ my uni right now though, any 'great ideas' students come up with are the intellectual property of the uni first and for most!! Have to sign away your rights upon joining the uni <_<

Hope they work out for ya.

I however have no aspirations to produce them on a commercial level (not unless i invent some amazing new block/cooling system) :p

yeah i know what you mean fillip, when i was at uni anything you coded belonged to the uni, and there were some clever programs done by some of my year that the uni just took. good way of making money i guess. hmm a pug block on the cards could be interesting, hope to see how that pans out!

I think the way Universities justify the IP rights is the fact your using their equipment and resources while you are creating, or researching your project. Plus it gives them a bit of extra cash as monkey said lol. :D

If your good though industry will snap you up pretty quickly. Its happened to a couple of people here.
