View Full Version : Overweight case!
ok so i got a nice midi tower asus case its plain black and quite understated and i have been modding it to fit watercooling in, i got a huge cape cora rad from alphacool now i have attatched this to the right side of the case and now it wont stand up straight it keeps tipping over!
so now what can i do?(apart from getting another rad and placing it on the other side) i have no idea and im at a bit of a loose end now(also i cant think how i overlooked this problem lol!)

Well, you can either counterbalance the weight of the rad on the opposite side of the case using something like a a chunk of copper bar running the length of the case sat in the very bottom. Or maybe look at increasing the 'base' by adding some feet similiar to those fopund on a chieftec case so that they stick out a little further and increase the width od the case.

If youre heart is set on having it mounted that way, and presuming you've installed the entire system/psu, you can add ballast to the opposite side of the case, place solid steel or aluminum bars inside the chassis.
edit: hah, fil beat me.... yea, Copper too, but a bit spendier

This idea might suck, but you could glue the case to the desk floor  J/K!
Fill's idea of couterweighting should work, and the feet idea could too, plus it might be easiest to try if you can attach the feet easily.

Yeah, steel square bar or indeed een flat bar if you can warrant the extra space. Copper was just the first heavy thing that sprung to mind. :inno:
well the case is so small and the radiator is so big thats the only way i could mount it apart from splitting the rad and putting half on each side which i really dont want to do, so i just have to find some sort of counterweight now

Or ya could toss in a 5lb dumbell weight
Sounds like you need to venture over to your local steel distributer and have em cut you 2.5" x .5" thick flat steel or copper bar... or scrounge through pop's shed for old lawnmower blades and whip out the hacksaw
edit: Or buy a bigger case! ^_^
i found a few small dumbell weights and with a few of them in there it balances perfectly so i will probably sand em off a bit then glue them to the case!, i will be leak testing soon at last!

What about getting a somewhat thick piece/slab of metal and bolting/attaching it to the bottom of the case? You could put felt or something rubbery on the bottom to keep it from scratching the surface.

Agree w/ Fibbles...much cleaner/neat approach.. the dumbbell ideas was in jest, but hey, whatever works ^_^
the dumbells are very good because they are only about 2cm radius and very heavy so i can just put a few at the bottom where noone will see them(there is no case window) so it works out well, the loops just testing now so i hope to have the rig up soon which is nice

Lead flashing would probably be the cheapest way to do it if you did decide you dont like the dumbells. Easy to cut too.

Yeah lead would work well, you could easily mould it into the corners of the case using a leaders mallet and its uber heavy, just dont go licking it all day, that wont do you any justice? Just had a thought, not sure whether or not this will work but I thought I would attempt to help out at least once - see small diagram below, basically a mod of case feet / casters. A lil' something I whipped up in good ol' fashioned MSPaint (...I hate it so much....):D :thumb:
Perhaps a trifle over the top but if you wanna do it professionally and over the top lol this would look ok, wouldn't get in the way to much, would be secure and do the job?!

Just leave her alone and call her Ileene.
Or how about some guide ropes and little pegs hammered into your desk ?
How about making a box the same size as the rad, mounting it on the other side of the case, add the weights and then fit some USB / Audio connectors, a fan controller or what ever takes your fancie in the front face.
Have you any pics so we can take a look at it ?
