I just finished reading a review of the newest AMD Opteron 275 and all I can say is jeez, Louise... friggin' awesome!!! :thumb:
Its from GamePC here: http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content.asp?id=opteron275&page=1
Check out the results on pages 6 through 12. :woohoo:
I've never been one to dump that much money on CPU's... but these are tempting ones. For those with deep pockets, a pair of 275's cost about $2600.00.
My summation... strap in your seatbelts, 'cause 'putering just took a major step forward. :w00t:

opterons have always been expencive tho.... i did notice however on a few tests the single core 252 beet the 275 i presum thats becasue those programs dont have good multi threading and of corse the 252 has a little better real clock rate. (2.6 rather than 2.2)

Aye zer0, it sounds like you nailed the advantage in certain apps.
With the advent of so many mult-core processors coming to market, maybe the software gurus will step up the work of making their products more useful to the multi-processor crowd. Let's hope so. :wiz:
I was surprised at Adobe's inability to handle the advantage of more than two CPU's, for example.

I have visions of my next mod: a dual-core Opteron system with SLI, in a Coolermaster ATC-S4000 with custom CNC'd WC components.
At eBay, by the way, you can regularly pick up a matched pair of Opterons at 50% of the going price. It's how I got my 250s. :D

^^^ Aye, like I mentioned about software needing to step up, it seems testing benchmark software does as well.
I'm building an A64 rig for my wife at the moment... using an AMD 3000, but with the thoughts of moving her up to a dual core X2 sometime soon. :thumb:

Despite talking about it there are only a couple of guys here who could afford setups like that, I'm certainly not one of them, I'm still running an 1800XP and Geforce3Ti :duh:

I can afford it by being in my late 30s, a clinical professional with a Master's degree, and saving for three years (and bargain hunting on eBay, and not smoking, and not having children...).

my stuff is nice, not uber modern, but has been gotten through a combo of work-scrap, auctions, and dumb luck.

how do you all pay for this?Ahhh... that's really very simple. You wait until its outdated and drops in price so you can afford it... in the meantime you just start another thread about the next latest, greatest hardware you can't afford.
Its the Wizard Way... :wiz:

zer0: have a looky around www.AICipc.com - I know someone who can hook you up.
edit: wrong url
Edit again: how 'bout dis: http://www.aicipc.com/productDetail.asp?id=152
PS: you do know with a 3U you might have to use PCI riser cards if all your stuff isn't on the mobo. also redundant psus if you're not going to have direct access to the machine would be a good idea, as would dual NICs and a RAID card.
For that matter, you might try to find a used Dell 2650 or 1650 with all the trimings - they'll do what ya want.

I've already made some plans for when I win the lottery. The only little problem is that I don't play the lottery :duh:
Isn't it sad, all this treasure is tomorrow's junk!@#$
My Story (if you think the story will be worthless, you have been warned):
Back in '98 I was a poor college student and I wanted a Canopus Pure 3D 2 Voodoo 2 card (it was the only non reference fan cooled board, with TV out), but the price tag was over the limit for a Voodoo 2, probably something like $80 over the limit. The 'situation' wasn't as bad as I made it out to look, since I blew the money my dad gave me for a meal plan on a Diamond Monster 2 Voodoo 2 (I lost a lot of weight that semester). Everything was comming along (all I played to death was 'Die By the Sword, 'Motocross Madness' and, 'NFS 3' with my trusty MS Sidewinder gamepad). So, what the hell is the point to this drivel? Late last year, I realized a lot of my old games don't work on XP, so I decided to build a nice P3 Voodoo 2 SLI system. It was on eBay that I picked up a pair of Canopus Pure 3D 2's, both have fans on the 2 hottest chips and TV out, and what did I pay? $20 (10GBP) shipped!!!
They should be worth more D@$$!#^&* Especially since Canopus doesn't made consumer video cards anymore!!
So yeah, AMD is awesome!!! Even socket 754 rocks!!!

Way to stay on topic! ;)
I don't care for socket 754, and I'm not happy with any 939 motherboards; either the CPU usage is high on some functions, or the function isn't there.
Good thing I can't afford a new PC right now...http://wizdforums.co.uk/images/smilies/mad2.gif I'll wait until the prices come down on the Athlon 64 X2.

Dr, Fibs... your story lays good reason to spend more money on the case and monitor while being patient with the hardware... :wiz:

unless you have the money to spend, of course.
