It's been a few months since Pug hooked me up with some watercooling goodies, but I've not had the time/ability to finalise the case details.
With the end of my second semester at Uni coming up, and the discovery of a bit of cash left in my termly budget I've decided to start finalising the case into something a bit more than your average Lian Li.
I'm not going for anything extreme because I don't have the know-how to pull off some of the mods that people are doing, and can't really afford to be too aggressive with my big shiny case.
Currently I have the system watercooled, radiator mounted on the top panel and Aquatube bay mounted. It looks very nice but I'm looking for something more.
Planned "enhancements" include:
- Blueifying the water - UV cathodes from EBuyer are on order, as is blue UV dye (just loved the look of Hexadragon too much!), and also some cable ties to tidy up the innards.
- Mounting my baybus for control of the rad fans. The baybus is hooked up and holes drilled, but I'm putting it in the top panel. DoomlordUK from ArsTechnica advised that I could desolder the terminal block on the baybus, as currently that gets in the way of it fitting properly, and directly solder the fan leads to the PCB. Sounds like a plan!
- Stealthing my optical drives. I wondered about getting those Lian Li bezels but they're expensive for what they are, and stealthing would look better IMO.
http://gallery.liquidelephant.co.uk/albums/Computer/Picture_004.thumb.jpg (http://gallery.liquidelephant.co.uk/albums/Computer/Picture_004.jpg)
^Click for larger. That's how it currently looks (sorry for the weird camera angle, the flash really reflected badly off all the other images)
http://gallery.liquidelephant.co.uk/albums/Computer/yah.thumb.jpg (http://gallery.liquidelephant.co.uk/albums/Computer/yah.jpg)
^Click for larger.
That's a plan of how I want it to look. Rough Photoshoppage, not too realistic ;)
That includes the stealthed drives. The big black bits are just there because I couldn't be bothered putting in lots of dots for a more realisitc fan grill ;)
I've got my eye on one of those Bulgin Vandalproof switches with the blue ring to replace the power button.
Does anybody know how easy these are to fit, and if it would plop nicely into the cutout that exists for a Lian Li power button, or am I going to have to widen it?
I'll then use both LED holes for the HDD activity LED. I have some super-brights that will easily shine through both so that isn't a problem.
I'm also planning on getting rid of the floppy drive, because it's fugly and I rarely use it. I just got the latest issue of Custom PC Mag through the door today and they have modded their Lian Li in that same place by putting in some black modders mesh (not ACTUAL modders mesh I hasten to add! ;)). It looks good and I'm thinking of doing the same (but in silver).
However it'll need something to stop dust getting in, and so that you can't just see the internals.
I don't know what to do about that and am open to suggestions.
Finally, and slightly more long term, what to do with the side of the case.
I could leave it solid, and have a "stealth mod" with the UV innards (ala Hexadragon), have a design laser cut into the side (anyone know of a cheap laser cutter in Manchester or South Wales?).
Or I could get the Lian Li side window and put some kind of design on it.
Once again, suggestions welcomed in that area. Ignore that shape on the plan, I was just messing about.
In fact, if you have ANY ideas for a simple, cheap but effective mod then throw them this way and I'll see if I like it :D
I've sparked a friend's interest in modding with all of this, and he's much more creative than I. Probably going to be running some tests over the holidays with marbles with LEDs inserted in them. Should be fun, and I'll be sure to post results up here :D
PS: The thread is called Neo because all my machines are named along a Matrix theme.

Ah that was the other thing I wanted to ask.
What would be the best way of mounting an Eheim 1046 pump to the case? Currently it's sitting on a folded up mousemat but I'd like to secure it for a LAN party in a few weeks time. I was thinking about drilling through the case, inserting some rubber grommets in the holes, then using long bolts with springs on, which the pump could then sit on top of (bolted on, obviously) in order to dampen the vibrations.

"Open the Pod door, HAL."
"I'm sorry, but I cannot do that..."
Sorry, but that res just looks like the beady eye of one homicidal computer. :p
In answer to your queries, the vandalproof switch should fit in the case witout any modifications. The Eheim pump can be mounted with purpose-made rubber dampening mounts. The Aqua-computer site has them, and I'm sure that Pug has too. ;)
http://www.aqua-computer.de/prodimg/entkopplungset.jpg
Self-adhesive Neoprene also makes a nice mounting base.
Nice ideas, though. I'll keep looking in with interest!

Hehe, I was drunk :D
(Joking)
I had a request to get some high-res shots of the aquatube but the flash kept reflecting. Rather than do the sensible thing and turn the flash off, I just went for a weird angle.
Actually, here's another. (http://gallery.liquidelephant.co.uk/albums/Computer/Picture_006.jpg)
Nexxo, those bolts are perfect! I knew I'd seen something like that before. Now I know it was here! Hopefully the store will be reopened soon so I can order some - don't fancy trying to order from Germany, what with the language and - most importantly - the shipping charges!
Funny you should say that about the Aquatube, somebody else has commented about the eye-look. Better get that UV dye in there sharpish :)
For a complete look at the construction (sort of, I didn't take many during the actual build because I foolishly ended up with water leaking into my PSU and got a bit stressed :o, go here (http://gallery.liquidelephant.co.uk/Computer?page=1)

Ideas update!
I found that Ebuyer are selling the LCD screen addons to the Sony PSOne for a rather nifty £34 (inc VAT). I'd been finding them for considerably more, some up to £120!
So I bought one, after seeing what other people have managed to do with them with relatively little effort.
So that little doozy is going to fill my floppy bays. But I plan to do a bit of research into mirrored plexiglass. I know that you can apply some lighting to it to make it become see-through. I'm going to test some with the LCD under various lighting (once it works), and if I can make it see-through all the time with the LCD on then ...
"Stealth" the floppy bays with the mirrored plexi so with the machine off it just looks like a mirrored surface (might try to get something that blends in better with the case but I'm not sure how successful that will be), then when it's powered on the little mirror becomes a display :)

Hi Edd.
Welcome to WizD. B)
Good to see you made it over here - sorry I've been tied up this week or I'd have welcomed you sooner. :)
Bulgin switches I don't carry yet - I bought mine from RS.
PerformancePCs have always come to mind when I think of lit Bulgins. Don't know what their current deal is on 'em tho'.
That's a stonking deal on the PSOne screen! I'll be watching with interest when you give us the low-down on how easy you found it to install. ^_^
For pump mounting - I do stock the elastomer mounts Nexxo showed. That's the proper way to do it anyway.... now for the lazy option - Velcro!
I just took delivery of a bunch of self-adhesive velcro sheets. They're 130mm x 100mm, so can be cut in half to give enough to secure a couple of pumps pretty cheaply and painlessly.
(While I'm on a pump parts pimpin' tip... I got some new "Eheim Mod" counterbalanced replacement impellors in on Thursday. They'll be on the site soon too.)

Hey, thanks for the welcome :)
What is the sound dampening like on that velcro? That's one of the main things I want to sort out, because my pump runs 24/7.
If it's pants then I'll be ordering some of those mounts when the store re-opens. Could you tell me what size hole needs to be drilled to put them in the case? The machine is coming home with me next week, and I'll drill some holes out ready for getting the mounts later on. Unless of course the velcro dampens the sound equally well, in which case I'll just do that.
Pug

Well, I haven't personally used the velcro as yet but it'd be along the lines of your mousemat approach, 'cept a little more secure at a guess.
Less work to fit than the bolts tho' (can anyone say tool-less installation? ) although I'd recommend cleaning and degreasing the area to use it if you do.
Tell you what. Seeing as you're fairly local and all that, How about I post you a sample and if you like it, you can pay me when we open? If you don't, give us your evaluation of why it sucks and I'll sell you a rubber kit instead. :)
That'd be great, thanks :)
You still have my details yeah?
Think so but I'd have to check.
Uni or home address?

*Sorry if this is a repost, I was sure I posted this once already but can't find it now... *
I've mailed it via these forums, hope that works!
Wooo, just got an email from Ebuyer saying that my LCD had shipped. Should be here in a day or three (I used the cheapest shipping option to keep price down), then I need to find time to mod it.
Firstly a big thanks to Pug for sending me the velcro pad for mounting the pump. It's in the case now and I'll get a picture of it a bit later on.
The LCD screen arrived today, and so I've started The Mod. Here are some pictures of progress so far ... (Click each images for bigger)

http://gallery.liquidelephant.co.uk/albums/LCD/LCD_003.sized.jpg (http://gallery.liquidelephant.co.uk/albums/LCD/LCD_003.jpg)
^THE CLAW! This thing was hard as nails to get open. Everything cracked open OK, apart from the speaker enclosures which were an absolute pain in the arse. I ended up battering the case about a fair bit, but I won't be using it again.
http://gallery.liquidelephant.co.uk/albums/LCD/LCD_005.sized.jpg (http://gallery.liquidelephant.co.uk/albums/LCD/LCD_005.jpg)
^At last! It's open! The speaker cables are glued to the circuitboard, but I managed to unscrew them without damaging the wiring. It remains to be seen whether or not I'll use them (or indeed be able to hook them up to anything in the first place)
http://gallery.liquidelephant.co.uk/albums/LCD/LCD_006.sized.jpg (http://gallery.liquidelephant.co.uk/albums/LCD/LCD_006.jpg)
^The screen itself. This thing is beautifully made, no scratches or marks tha I can see. Hopefully the picture quality will be good too.
http://gallery.liquidelephant.co.uk/albums/LCD/LCD_008.sized.jpg (http://gallery.liquidelephant.co.uk/albums/LCD/LCD_008.jpg)
^PCB seperated from the screen. This is pretty good, because I can test-mount the LCD and get it just right before I add in the PCB and the rest of the gubbins.
VGA cable purchased, and the LCD screen mounted inside the case. Now I just need to wire the up the PCB and get it all inside the case too.
I'm off out soon but I'll post pics tomorrow/when more progress is made

NOT good so far :(
I'm an idiot and left the DVI -> VGA adaptor for my R9800 in my flat when I came home for Easter, so have been trying to run it off my OAP Diamond Stealth III card. GG 32MB of RAM and passive cooling!
It didn't work first off. Apparently there's a problem where graphics cards don't detect the LCD as being connected straight off because there isn't a strong enough signal coming back down the RGB ground pins ... or something.
Then I buzzed out the pins/wires with a continuity tester and discovered that I'd been a complete idiot and done the wrong wires
So, re-solder with the correct wires ... and it still doesn't work.
I've tried swapping monitors and LCDs around through different connectors - all cards work because my CRT runs fine on both of them, but I just can't get anything on the LCD :(
What's more, PowerStrip crashes my machine horribly - i.e. the whole thing locks up when it loads at startup, requiring a Safe Mode uninstall.

Well when I plug the power in the screen turns from a kind of dull green to strong black, so it definately powers on.
I've not tried the buttons yet because teh PCB is also stuck inside the case, and those sticky foam things are strong little buggers!
When I next get the time to have a proper bash at getting it working again I'll try them, but for now it's revision only, no more moddage (apart from getting those drive covers done ;). First year finals in one week :(
Weird about the DVI adapter, because some people have suggest I try that!

Weird about the DVI adapter, because some people have suggest I try that! from what i gather the dvi - vga converter works on some cards (ati 7000) and not on others (9800) so people who cant get it to work on the dvi-vga converter run it off the vga only and run there main monitor from the dvi-vga converter (think i said that right ;) ) hopefully i should have a new 7000 soonish and il give it some more time :)
thanks for the headsup on the lcd screen looks like a good mod to try. but ebuyer have raised the price to 50 now which is a bit of a shame
They have? Bugger! I knew I should have snapped one up earlier...
How's yours coming Edd? Have you tried TVTool? I needed to use it to get any dual-head functionality on my old GF3.
(Rig's looking nice btw, I timed out on the pics last time I looked but now I can see them properly, it looks real sweet)
No, no luck with mine at all :(
It's a shame but I'm no electronics expert in any way, shape or form so I'm just going to write it off for now.
And I think I still owe you some money for that pump-mounting stuff (which is fantastic by the way! :D), how much was it? I did a sweep of the online store but wasn't sure if it was there or not.

As for ol' Neo himself ... well I *did* stealth the drives. Sort of.
I got the tabs cut off the drive plates before I came back here after the easter break, then put them on the drives.
Unfortunately (may just be on this case) they are SO well fitted that they won't actually slide in and out of the front bezel :(
So I think I'm just gonna go for the Lian-Li drive bay bezels instead.
I found when I stealthed the drives on my Lian Li that I had to bend in the side flaps to stop it getting stuck. They stick out a bit so that they fit better onto the case.
any luck with the screen yet?
No, I've given up for the time being.
I've no idea why it won't work, and dont have any tools with me to do any work on it.

I finally yanked the LCD from my case in order to test the volume buttons, but it seems the whole thing is dead :(

you need to do the resistor mod first in order to make it turn on, you basically solder a 300r resistor between two points on the pcb, although my friendy used a 470 and it worked out fine.http://t.waters1.users.btopenworld.com/immer-an-01.jpghttp://t.waters1.users.btopenworld.com/immer-an-02.jpg
Aye that's to get it recognised by the graphics card though. When you plug it into the power (but nothing else) you should be able to adjust the volume and contrast (or brightness). I've seen some pictures of a disconnected LCD with those meters on the screen. Mine doesn't even get that far.

what that does is turn the screen on all the time whenever its plugged into mains not just when there is a signal which is the only time it works normally.if you havent done it now you would need to do it anyway later on so its worth a try and its only gonna take 20 seconds

However then I put it in the case and attempted to get it working - nothing. So I took it out of the case just recently, but I *may* have broken something - it was stuck onto the case with a few too many double-sided pads, and I may have broken something when I was trying to wrench it off!

seriously edd if you do the resistor mod i think your screen will work.this mod isnt compatible with any other ps1 lcd screens just the official ones, you can wire up a gameboy screen as an lcd but not a colour or gameboy advance screen because its more complicated as instead of each pixel being given a simple on or off it has to be told waht colour to be so its a lot more complex

I will do the resistor mod, but it's all on hold for now. My machine is running on the desk with no watercooling at the moment. I need to finish the other case I'm working on before I can even start thinking about what I need to do to mine.
Well I've been posting some pics of my case bits in the Trinity thread so I won't cross post again.
As soon as Pug gets back to me on what the best Athlon 64 cooler he sells is, I can buy the bits necessary to get me up and running inside my case again!
I still want to sleeve the PSU to tidy it up but that's something relatively minor that can wait for a while. Once I've got some space on the desk to work I'll start having one last autopsy of the Psone LCD

Sleeved the PSU yesterday in something that should match the water tubes. It's not the tidiest job, but my first time so I don't think it's too bad.

Black face plates at last!! ^_^
Bought the Lian Li faceplates (and CD bezels), but finally managed to get the Aquatube mount and radiator grill black :)

Just need to find Pug now. I'm trying to order a primer tank, some more tubing and a new Socket 754 retention plate for my Cuplex block. Then I can finally get the beast back online :)

What's going on? I just painted the chassis of my PC60 black as well.
It looks way cooler
Love the black bezels. Again, strangely similar to what I was doin'.
Shapin' up nice Edd :)

That looks great with the black bezels, I'm surprised I haven't seen that done before (at least not that I remember).

New MSI K8N Neo Platinum + Athlon 64 3000+ http://wizdforums.co.uk/images/smilies/wub.gif
I sooooo want to get this up and running, but I still can't get in contact with Pug - anybody know where he is?
I need some more plug&cool tubing, a primer tank and a Socket 754 retention plate for my Cuplex block and then I can get it all going. I've even looked at buying the stuff from the AquaComputer retailer in the US, but they're out of stock on the primer tank and it costs just a little too much to have it sent here.
I really need this stuff!

that's quite a pretty board you've got there.
Now if they'd only NOT put those stupid multicolored IDE ports and DIMM slots and PCI slots... if you make a black board, MAKE IT ALL BLACK DAMNIT.
No idea where pug is, he'll be back. he always is.
Yeah I was a bit disappointed with the colour schemes of the kit.
The board itself is very nice, done out in black and not as crowded as my A7N8X board, but the multicoloured bits ruin it a little. Luckly my pump will be sitting in front of a lot of the bottom connectors along with the primer tank.
