I'm gonna think about it. I'm not a fan of auto trans, but it can always be converted. especially since it need work anyways.

For $1000 how can I refuse?!

Jeez! only $1000!! thats like £600 with todays exchange rate.

Wish you could find cars in that good nick over here!! :(

Then when you add best part of £2000 insurance for it...

... i'll stop, i'm only upsetting myself.

Researched my options for repairing trans...

Rebuild auto trans for $3000

Swap to 5spd for $2500

Learning this, I told the seller it was a bigger investment than I imagined, but I'd be comfortable taking car for $500.. His response was "Then I might as well drive it into ground and call the Wrecker" That response really irritated me. He would just rather nobody fix it. "What a Dick"

No loss, I got other cars to work on anyways... it sure was fun dreaming though

Glad to see mechanics take the piss all over and not just in the UK.

Yes.

I have a problem seeing a potentially good car get tossed instead of me fixing it ^_^

Thats what it would cost if my buddy and I tackled the job.... which includes sourcing all the additional parts ie: clutch pedal assembly and clutch rebuild kit.

Dealer wants twice the first amount.

You see gang, I have this illness. I can't pass up a good deal on a vehicle. As you witnessed already, I'll go as far as trying to make it an even better deal. I inherited this trait from my Grandfather who sold used cars for a living. Its an illness i tell ya!

So if you don't mind I'm gonna continue sharing my experiences with you. I encourage you guys to start a thread about your rides too. Be it bikes/cars/trucks. Thats why this forum was created.

I have a friend that owns a used car business (go figure) who periodically has to tell me about his great finds. Granted, having an insider in the used car industry is very beneficial. He called me yesterday about this `96 Chev Blazer LT. It was "owned by a retiree who lived in Florida" That tells me 3 things right away.

no rust. (it doesnt snow in Fla)
low miles. (53K)
diligently maintained.

Unfortunatley is 2WD, but its for the Mrs  Tan leather interior, power everything, CD player, premium alloys, tilt steering, tinted windows. Vortec V6

Its a worldwide known fact that the best used cars are the ones owned by our senior citizens. I'm gonna deal on it tonight... I'm just not ready to own a mini van yet <_<

I have a Honda Civic Type-R but its completly standard. B) Thinking of trading it in for a DC9 Integra Type-R if their released here this year as lately loads of CTR's have appeared around me. <_<

The Integra is apparently going to be limited to 2000 in the UK so it will be a bit more exclusive. Unfortunatly i'm also trying to buy a house so i think the car will have to wait.

any vehicle will do gang... I've gotta GT Mountain BIke (rigid frame) collecting dust in the garage. THe frame paint job is outrageous. Orange w/ Black splatter paint. Homeage to Jackson Pollack :p

Civic Type Rs are sweet! Lemme see

I'll have to take some pics of mine, dirt and all when i get home. I'll try and find some decent pics online but the 04 models out now and it looks slightly different so all the Honda photos are of that one.

Heres a pic of the new integra Type-R as i think they are called something else in the US.

you know its not nice to taunt me with nice cars! my poor little punto really can't match them! I'd love an rx7 or civi type r but the problem lies with how much it costs to insure one of them!

mnpctech
18th March 2004, 12:47
I'd love to take that Type R onto the Track. Last year I had an opportunity to take the new Mitsu EVO for a aggresive drive. Awesome car for the money.

You guys always get the nicer looking and higher hp versions of cars than over here. Our safety standards are very strict.

Ah but then you do get cheaper after market mods, and american turbos are certainly one of the best in my opinion. In fact the whole after market tuning scene is much better in the US. Can't have it both ways :p

Da_Rude_Baboon
18th March 2004, 13:57
£750 a year fully comp with me (24) and my 22 year old girlfriend.

I test drove a Evo 4 and it was amazing but the cheapest quote i got £4600 a year :o A tad on the expensive side seeing as they only do 16mpg and you have to service it every 6000 miles!

Grand Monkey
18th March 2004, 14:05
how many years no claim you got? thats good considering i'm paying 450 on a punto 1.2 8 valve!

mnpctech
18th March 2004, 14:11
Yea, I hear you guys.

I was into tuning Watercool VWs before it got popular in the US. The Performance Parts Aftermarket has gotton much better, but Great Britain still owns for innovation and better quality resell shops. Best German Car Tuners in the World are you Brits.. Hands down... Just check out Ian Birch's shop. Dubsport (http://www.dubsport.com/) nuf said.

Grand Monkey
18th March 2004, 14:16
yeah dubsport is one of the greats, i'd love to get a golf vr6 mark 3 and let them loose on it. damn this insurance thing for stopping me :p

Not entirely sure i agree with that. You look at American hot rods and you guys tend to strip the car down and rebuild it properly while here they stick pieces of fibre glass to it. :D

mnpctech
18th March 2004, 15:24
Props, but comparing Hot Rods to Bimmers/Audis/VWs is like comparing Oranges to Apples. Street Rods have the hp and looks, but largely lack in handling and practicality. Theres a slew of DIY complete ground up kits today so Hot Rod building isn't as an elusive skill as it was 50 yrs ago. But yea, guys like Ed Roth, George Barris who built stuff from their own sketchs are Gods.

Truely the Germans and Japanese are the best tuners, but the Brits have mastered the art of refinement.
