Ok, looks like i'm gonna dominate this topic, neway...
I've been trying to set up an FTP folder on my comp using IIS on XP pro.
Installed iis no probs put some files in default folder and tried to configure the router + norton best i could.
On the router, which is a linksys FRS*** model ( i think ) I've fowarded all connections on port 21 to the IP 192.168.1.100 which is the IP my comp seems to have permanently, even though i thought the it would be dynamically allocated by the router depending on who (which pc i the house) connected first each day.
Anyway, i can access the ftp folder on my machine from the others in our student house (all of which run to the linksys) and i just tried it in uni on a UNIX machine and i got through on the address 81.110.9.58 - whihc i assume is the WAN for my router which then obviously fowards to the appropriate directory on my machine.
HOWEVER... it doesnt seem to work on windows machines outside my LAN. I got a mate to try it last night and it just kept timing out while searching for the directory.
I got him to try entering both those IP's u see above and same thing each time.
Can anyone help me?? :( afaik i've set everything possible on the router w/out activating DMZ - which i dont wanna.
HELLPPPPP!!

If you've got DHCP enabled it might be causing you problems, although you seem to have the same IP permanantly this may not always be the case. The reason it seems to stay the same is because when the lease runs out it will poll the DHCP server (presumably the Router) to renew the lease on that address, and get a new lease on it, probably for another 7 days or whatever.
Assign yourself a static IP address and then try again. (and take this IP address out of the DHCP scope of the router so it can't assign it to someone else :p )
As a side note i've been trying to sort this out on my network and i'm having the same problem, although the client can ping the ftp server and vice versa, the server keeps timing out. You could try adjusting the default timeout on the FTP client and server you're using. I only got it to work once but then the connection dropped and i couldn't re-establish :( . I think this might be beacuse my IP is getting hit with loads of dodgy packets from virus infected users (the activity light on my cable modem is on permanantly) , you really don't want to see my firewall logs - Bloody Blueyonder

HEHE, i'm blueyonder when at home too. NTL here.
I've managed to get 2 ppl on windows based 'puters to access my ftp folder, but now when they try and save the files to their comp it times out.
However, upon further inspection i found it wasnt working on just one friends 'puter - works when someone tries to save the files to the pc's at uni, but not when my mate back home tries to save to his comp - strange, wouldve thought the uni' network secuirty would prove a bigger pisser.
Yeah, thought about assigning static IP to my comp, but from the little i know about the router it seemed as though i could have either all dynamic or all static and thats not fesiable right now.
The quest for perfect FTP harmony continues...

QUEST COMPLETE!!!
problem sorted witin 2 hrs of first post, gotta be a first. It now appears to work all fine and dandy - uploading at about 25kb/s which for a 1mb BB seems ok doesnt it? I'm sure the upstream for 1mb BB is about 256k.
Anyway, good luck F.T.
I'd offer my assistance but tbh, i'm not at all sure i did much.

Oh well glad you got it sorted ;), i'm pretty sure it's BY that's causing the problem (wouldn't be the first time) I've set this type of thing up before with no problems.
Even when i did get it working i was getting speeds in excess of 3kb/sec (why do i pay for broadband again <_<)
Plus if i tracert to the client i get timeouts all over the shop. I gave up in the end it's quicker to burn a sodding cd and post it to the poeple i needed to get the stuff to!

Dont say that :( I'm home soon and dont want BY to fuck this up now...
*gentley weeps in corner*
Does sound rather shocking, esp 3kbs speeds. Never had probs with them back home, but then i never do anything to risky with my dads comp - mine not on the net their yet cos i have to phone bloody telewest to register new mac address for router!!

You can add MAC addresses thorugh selfcare now - no need to phone the "Tech support " (and i use the phrase loosely <_< ) boys.
i updated a couple the other day and they were live in about 10 minutes , none of this waiting 24 hrs malarky
Does the router support MAC spoofing (My netgear does) then you can just set the router MAC to one already registered and bob's yer uncle :)

OOOOOH good, i'll try that when i'm next home.
As for my router immitating the mac address? dunno, i'll look to see if it can, though i'd rather just register several mac's incase something fucks up. then at least i can plug in individual pc's and use them

Good idea - That's what i've done, i just didn't register the MAC of the router; that spoofs the MAC of my main PC - Seeing as you can only register 5 i figured why waste one on my router when i don't need to! :p

We have a MAC clone option, so we're good to go in both instances. B)
