Does anyone know of one that exists and is preferably free?

Needs to run on Windows (surprise surprise) and linux (Fedora being the most likely)

well nomater what you do it wont runn unless its installed for that exact os... however there is some drive imaging programs you could get that will make an exact copy of the drive format and all...

also another option is to use a backup utility on your linux setup and just format your windows drive in fat32 or compile the mtfs modules in to your kernel... (dont know if fedora has ntfs support)

also fedora is great but check out ubuntu its based off of debain and you can install programs with only a few words...

example

$ su
Password: {enter root password here}
# atp-get install xmms (xmms is a winamp like media player)
fedora has a simaler tool but its not as well liked..

Now do you want to _pay_ for this or a free solution. If its for full and incremental backups of the data on your home network (full backups are not a substitute for the speed of a restore ghost image)... then see if you can find Veritas 8 (Not 9, it sucks, and I'm spending $25K+ at work to replace it) on ebay or some such. Veritas 8 is aimed mostly at tape backup, but its got clients for almost eeevverrrything (almost as good as commvault galaxy, which is what I'm spending the $$$$ on). Should go for cheap

*runs of to ebay*

I recommend you confirm my assumtion there's a linux client for it. linux is linux - its all aboot the kernel.

well i found this (its free ;])
http://www.partimage.org/
it runs on linux and can make an image of any mounted partition...

there is g4u also its like ghost for linux heres a site about it...
http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/

well thats the best i could do it seeme no matter what way you go you will have to have the program under windows or linux... im shure you wouldent want to buy both a windows and a linux version of Veritas 8 but anyways good luck...

Thanks for the response guys but I found a piece of software that only costs a few $$'s and works on Mac, Windows and most linux based platforms. You just need to install the appropriate version on each amchine and then tell them to talk to each other. It's called BackupSW if anyone's interested. I have no idea how well it works; seems basic but I only need a basic package and something that doesnt involve me spending time compiling stuff on Linux
