Hey all welcome to my ongoing worklog for my project invalid li. The name of course comes from my name, invalid and lian li since this case is a v1000b.
My goal here is a clean case with an over all black and silver (chrome) theme. The case itself is obviously black and the elements added will mostly be chrome/silver.
The only thing currently on the case is the cut out of the window. You can see it here:
http://www.eboze.com/il/window.jpg
Over the window will be acrylic with rounded edges mounted on the outside with silver machine screws. The rubber molding on the window now will be there as I want the window slightly raised and that molding will keep it a tight close.
Here are the plans for the rest.
The TOP:
http://www.eboze.com/il/top.jpg
92mm fan hole with metal ring from MNPCTECH (As seen on hellbound)
2 chrome covered handles again from MNPCTECH
two chrome hinges connected to the side door
SIDE:
http://www.eboze.com/il/side.jpg
window on outside
invalid logo on window in chrome metal attached via screws
chrome pull out handle on bottom to lift door off catch
I will be receiving my first set of things this weekend and then on Monday so updates then and when time permits.

Yes it will be on the side window in either an applique or a piece of metal bolted on. The metal all depends on if I can find someone that can cut such a design into a piece of metal at a decent cost. The same sort of metal as the ring for the 92mm fan. Then that would greatly help the weight of the door for the gas springs.

Yes, and fastened to the panel in the same manner ie: outter diameter ring of skull has recessed 10/32 button head screws

Small update:
I installed the window side recessed ring handle.
Starting the main circle cut. I realized after making my marks my measurements were off. So ignore that the cut is off of the lines. ;)

I don't know why but seeing those handles against the black alu, I was just reminded of Nexxo's case in the early stages.

Small update just stopped home and my package from mnpctech arrived. (UPS left it outside in the rain!)
Quick pics of the ring in action before being mounted. I had a precut hole in the top for a fan before and its almost a perfect fit already. Just a bit more cutting and it will be exact.

I work as a broadband tech. Right now I am contracting in Michigan for a local cable company here to help with the onslaught of them launching Voip here. I go back home (NYC) April 4th. Great money but really beats ya up. I have one more year left on college, after that who knows what I will try to get into. God knows I will not be touching the cable industry. lol

Michigan. I have been here since January. My contract ends the first week of April and I go back home the 4th. What happens is, cable companies launch new products and get hit hard (especially during winter). They hire contractors from all over to help take on all the work. Which results in us working our a$$ off. These contracts usually last for a few months or so. Then you either go back, or they ask you to stay if they like you.
The only reason I do it is for the money and because I have family here in MI. I look at it as 3 months of seeing friends and family.

Tomorrow my "spare" case arrives from frozencpu. I bought a cheap tower for 20 bucks. I don't want to do any more cutting or modding to my invalid li case until my hardware is out of it. This way I can really dig deep on it without worrying about the precious insides.

Alright quick update. I got my temp case in the mail Wednesday. Its a crappy little case I got from Frozencpu for 20 bucks. Thursday after work I bowled, and last night after work I had a wedding of a close buddy of mine.
I am second from the left. To the right of me is the groom.
So today is the first day I have had a chance to do anything! Right now I am taking my PC apart to put everything in the spare case. Then I can get to work. This hangover is making me go a bit slower than I would normally though. lol
Look for updates with pics later!

Where did you get that Maltese Cross? Autozone. I stop by the local one here when I am bored on my route and look around for things I can add into the casemod. I found these in a set of brake covers for manual transmission (sometimes they are in different sections than the ones for automatics). I have 2 of these and one that is longer for clutch. Only twenty bucks for the set.
i agree that Maltese Cross is realy cool looking too bad you arnt keeping it. (or did i read that wrong) You read right. But now that I am seeing that people think it does look cool I am coming around to it. lol I am going to leave it on for a while and see if it grows on me. Thanks Dutch. Much appreciated!
I worked a small bit on the chrome wire hider for the top fan and the cathode I will be installing in the top of the case. I really loved the look of orac3 but didn't want anything as overkill. So I decided on one cord.
I started with a normal shower hose and painted it metallic blue. Then I sanded the outer layer off so that only the inner parts were blue. Works great to get away from the pure chrome and add a bit of color.
http://www.eboze.com/il/h7.jpg
Next I drilled a hole where I wanted it and plaved the fitting in it with a rubber outline to hide the edges.
http://www.eboze.com/il/h6.jpg
http://www.eboze.com/il/h5.jpg
The other side looks like this
http://www.eboze.com/il/h3.jpg
Next I attached the hose itself and screwed it on.

http://www.eboze.com/il/h1.jpg

Later I will fish the wires through here and hide the inverter and such next to the hard drives in the bottom area.

To blowhole, or not to blowhole. That is the question.
http://www.eboze.com/il/front1.jpg
I did this in photoshop real quick to get an idea of how it would look. I would either use a black ring and an aluminum fan, or an orange fan with uv lighting ( to match the fan that will be in the top). I think the alu fan would better accent the project but who knows.
What do you guys think? Turbine intake in the front, or no?
biggiy6
13th March 2005, 21:16
Go with a turbine and a aluminum fan it would look much better and it would flow with the black and the chrome look you have on top. It is so purty on the top *drools*
mnpctech
13th March 2005, 21:33
Or.. how about 2, 92mm Turbines side by side... You would need about
7-3/4" space in the bezel...
Also, paint the inside portion of the fan frame black so the blades have more visual floating effect. Know what I mean Vern? ;)

Sadly 2 92's wouldn't fit. Not enough room. I would have to go with a single 92 or 120. Or I could do dual 80s. I will play around with some ideas later. I am off to radio shack for a supply trip.

Not a problem. And yeah, the 80mm duals will stay in the land of discussion. I highly doubt I will be doing them. As of now its definitely a 92 or 120. More than likely a 120.

No flex at all. I think the two handles and the ring actually make the top more solid because of all the screws. I can lift it and tilt it sideways and there is no feeling of bending or moving.

Input needed. What the heck should I do to clean this area up?
http://www.eboze.com/il/wth.jpg
Because of the window design I chose this area detracts too much. And there is nothing there to see. The first thing I am doing is repainting the hose inner rings to black, not blue as they are. I realize now it doesn't match.
For this area I have two ideas. One is to do what modsquad did at bit tech and put acrylic there. I would put black acrylic there and bolted on. Or the other idea I had is to totally encase the bays area in black acrylic with an applique on the side in silver.
Any other ideas are appreciated. This area is really bugging me when I look at the case.

How about a CF panel like crimson sky used. Or a bit of plexi painetd black on the back then etch your design into the back and light it from the bottom or top edge. Or you could always just paint the internals.

A piece of rectangle alu with the project name waterjetted into it..and raise it at all 4 corners with round alu stock. And then 2 white CC's hidden behind it. I hate the screw side of a case always thought it was ugly, so this would be a good way to hide it.

Update time: Window Installed
Sorry for lack of updates here. Been really busy with work and some design work for a client. But I found a couple hours today to do the window.
I ordered a custom cut piece of acrylic from delviesplastic and one from Mountainmods. Delvies came first so I used that. (I tend to buy two of things just in case I muck up the first attempt) ;)
First I measured the spots for all the screws.
http://www.eboze.com/il/w1.jpg
This window was always to be installed on the outside as I wanted it to have a slight lift. So I layed the plastic on the frame to mark where to make the same holes on the side itself
http://www.eboze.com/il/w2.jpg
To get the raise I simply installed window molding on the inside and then on the screws I added a small rubber washer to each. Here is the final result.

As soon as I receive the lift in the mail. Short delay I guess. :(
Although, on a side note I am having a hard time figuring out placement of hinges. My original plan is not possible due to so much going on at the top on the inside. So I am trying to find some special hinges that don't sit flush but come down and up. (That sounds confusing but basically they need to go around something)

Thanks guys. I am going to go outside tomorrow and get some better pictures. I am extremely happy about where the project is. I am ordering my hardware this week and finishing the inside of the case. I will also be remounting the leds for HDD act and power. I am also using the original lian li switch as a reset switch which I will install on the underside of the case just in case I ever need one. The last thing will be to design some appliques and get them done by shattered.
I think before I go home all that will be left is the door lift and the invalid aluminum logo from Chris. The door lift due to the place never getting them in stock for what seems like forever , and the alu logo because Chris is a busy man B).

lol yeah. Phase 1 will sadly be all air cooling. With everything else put in right now I could not afford the water cooling route. :(
However, that heatsink will not be used as I bought it when I thought I was sticking with my 2800+ XP. Now that I ordered the upgraded parts I have to toss it anyways. lol

The rings were 29 bucks and the fan was 10 from a local shop. So you are partly right. It was 40 bucks for the front and top intake plus 12 more for the aluminum spinner on the front.
Thing is though, is I bought all of this in phases. Nothing I really bought at the same time. Speading it out across numerous pay periods.

Yes, Bill linked to it in this thread. I ended up finding one in a local shop here but at double the price of the site Bill posted! So use that site if you want a good price.

The "Kind of Complete" post.
I am leaving tonight for NY so for now the case is as completed as it can be for now. Not quite where I wanted to be, but still happy with the result thus far.
All the hardware is in now too except for the cpu which I will get late this week.
Pictures:
Here you can see what I finally did to block off the cage area. Acrylic painted black on the inside bolted on
http://www.eboze.com/il/final/window.jpg
And here without the outer window so you can see its shine:
http://www.eboze.com/il/final/cageblock.jpg
The cage block area will get an applique on it seen here:
http://www.eboze.com/il/final/app2.jpg
And on the window itself will be an applique of this:

On the inside behind the fan I put the stuff from the 120mm fan to help catch dust and such

And now for some outside full shots. The cooldrive will later have its face sanded and polished so it better shines to match everything else:

Damn good work! The outside shots are awesome and the way the light is hitting the top panel outside is sweet! Very clean work and I love the window I think I will do that general concept with my window etch whenever I decide to order it.

Nope. It's so amazing it's completely inconceivable to the average human being. If i told you it would cause a total overload of your brain and your head would simply collapsein a desperate attempt at trying to comprehend the greatness of it.
... or the more factually accurate version being that it's a baby concept and one that needs work before I elaborate http://wizdforums.co.uk/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I am a compulsive modder and also a perfectionist. I finish a mod and all I have is ideas to move on. So to fund the next mod, I sell the current case. Its kind of dumb. lol

You need to get ahead ;^P Sell a really friggin' sweet mod, then use it to fund 2 cases... sell one... ;^P make a new one... sell the older one... use the newest... make a new one... sell it ;^P That way you'll always have a sweet modded case to use while you work on the next. ;^P
