I just got in line and will be opening my walet to the tune of $210 US for this block. Silver base. Best performing thing in the universe, imho (imhe?).

If I act now I may be able to get more than one - who wants in?

I still haven't bothered to replace my Evos & Cape with a NexXxos yet (and I even have two of the gold ones here... :o) )
I dropped my temps 10°C the other week when I blew the dust out of my rad, so I still have headroom with what I'm using - plus with all the other blocks on my lowly 1046/AquaStream/AP900, I'm not sure how much benefit I'd actually reap for the added cost involved.
Thanks for the offer though. :)

Man, if I had the dough (I do, but I don't) I'd say YES! I'm in the same boat as Pug though, I don't think that block was made for my setup. When I set up a higher flowing loop with my 3/8" ID perhaps, but now, nope.

OT/ I saw a Cascade for sale in the UK @ $80 starting, but I don't remember what it hit at the end. I shoulda bid on it!!!

A lot of the 'huge' comes from the stainless universal bracket on the top, the body of the block itself isn't too huge in my mind. Maybe bigger than 'normal' commercial blocks, but about normal for the DIY style. The size is needed for the 2 plates, strength, and room for the intake plenum (IIRC).

I won't be lapping it: from Cathar's site - Your Storm block has already been professionally machined and lapped flat for the primary CPU contact area defined as a 38x38mm (1.5.x1.5.) area in the middle of the base of the block. The satin-like dull reflective finish on the block.s base is intentional. A highly polished finish is not indicative of a flat contact area, just as a polished metal ball is highly reflective but absolutely is not flat. It is strongly recommended that you do not lap or polish the base-plate of the Storm water-block as you will make it less flat and degrade the quality of the CPU to water-block contact area. -- http://www.employees.org/~slf/lrwb/

if Cathar says don't, I won't. He knows what he's doing

Well, the old block was sitting at (IIRC) 36*C at full load... the graphs on procooling (flowrate vs delta T) suggest 6 to 12 (IIRC, check the graphs yourself if you like) degrees better than the maze4 I had (the shittiest block they've tested :(). Cross your fingers. It'll be a bit, parts from Dr. Fibbles, Pug, and Knipex are all in transit.

Man I hope they stick to Delrin...

edit: oh good they did!

new top is pretty funky. I like the non-descript squareness. still, a 3% improvement probably isn't the design of the top. Wonderful one way or another.

So if this means a 3% improvement over the G4, that makes the G5 only 2% better? (I thought Cathar had stated a 5% improvement (maybe it was 15%?) over the G4 for the G5)

The deal with Swiftech is the only thing keeping the Storm G4 alive, Cathar is not making them anymore, you want one? Buy it from Swiftech. I'm sure there are many places in Europe that recieve goods from Swiftech, so just Google it or check Bit-Tech's (www.bit-tech.net (http://www.bit-tech.net)) forums for the "Extreme Cooling" links thread, it's a sticky too ^_^

If you want a G5, then you can buy from Little River (read the announcement on the Storm page).

I could test it but I don't have proper equipment and i'd only be able to tell you idle and load temps with a given ambient... so delta T between water and proc, and even that's not too accurate. i think pHaestus at procooling is getting a swiftech G4 and he'll update the charts of all the blocks at the end of the new review. he'res the one showing G5 and non-swiftech G4:

The only kit thermaltake makes is the big water crap and something that looks like it should be in freaky pron movies. Thermaltake hasent made a decent product in years excluding their thunderblade fans and possibly one or two heatsinks. Everything else is just crapola in my opinion. And that includes the shark and tsunami.

Corsair has a nice kit rite now with the tweaked 6002 block and black finish witch is rather sexy may I add.

@star I agree with ya man, the swiftceh storm does look rather weird. It looks something d-teck would make. But I think im going to wait to get a pure silver g8 when cathar decides to produce it. I mean 150+jets on it ougth to bring a whole new look at waterblocks.

actualy that sounds like an awsome idea. i think I can actualy braze now so thats another thing out the way. and after some reaserch we could use dehumidifier compressors easily. I figure if we pick a cuple of off seazon dehumidifiers for about 50-80bux a pop and some parts and posibly a cuple of machined simple copper heads we could build a unit for less than 250bux if we get lucky.......goes off to wonder.....

If your gonna try phase, you're gonna want to look at a 1/2 Hp R507 compressor (a 404 compressor will do, running 507 is fine but it's a higher pressure) I'd suggest Danfoss, as that's what's used in the Prometeia and Vapochill units, but with 404a (Mach II GT) or R134a (original Mach II)

If you can tune a unit to dissipate 230 W @ -40 with a dual head, then I'll marry you!

I would not use a home cooling unit. It would be way overkill and would not do mutch more than a smaller more compact unit would. You dont need more than a 1/2hp or 3/4 at most for a phase unit. Home units sometimes are multiple hp and extremely expensive. Hell it would be allot more eficient and efective to run a cascade of 1/2 hp compressors. But im not quite confident on building a cascade yet and building a regular phase unit still makes me nervus but I think im going to start with a chiller first and then work my way up.

I duno about the tuning but that can be done to disipate more heat at nearly -90c with cascades. But as far as you marrying me I think ill pass.:-p
