View Full Version : Watercooling your HD?

I have heard mixed opinions about watercooling an hd but the majority of it is that it just adds extra heat to your loop and doesn't cool very well. So I am curious and want to set the record straight. Can you effectively cool a hard drive without hurting temps on your cpu and gpu? The reason I am asking is because the way I have to set my radiator up means the hd cages have to go bye bye and the hd moved up to a 5 1/2 bay. I will be running 1/2" ID tubing through my system if that really matters.

I'd say YES for sure. The only bad thing that WC'ing my drives did was to add additonal resistance to my system, but only because its half inch. 2 HDDs worth of heat is <30W - quite small.

but stick them at the end of the loop as they don't need to run as cool as the other parts.

I think it's well worth it if you can afford the blocks. It can certainly lower the volume of your case considerably.

So has anyone else heard of adding more heat the loop or are they just running the setup wrong? I planned on adding it at the end if I do go with it and I can't see the temps going up very much because I will have a dual heatercore to cool the water down.
Would someone mind suggesting some good hd blocks? I found this one but haven't heard very good things about asetek.

The hottest parts of a hard drive are the sides where the mounting holes are situated. There's almost no benefit to be had from coolers that sit on top and cool the cover of the HDD. If you're getting HDD blocks get some like this - http://www.wizarddesigns.co.uk/imgs/12412.jpg

I did it for the soundproofing ebnifits and would highly recomend it. Full enclosure.

Thank you for clearing that up for me fillip. Now where can I get some of those or something like that with 1/2" fittings?

Now where can I get some of those or something like that with 1/2" fittings? tbh mate, I've not seen any http://wizdforums.co.uk/images/smilies/redface.gif, all the HDD blocks i've seen are for smaller bore systems. I'm not sure whether Star' redrilled his for large fittings, I have a feeling he did but I can't be sure without looking.
[EDIT] He did indeed rebore the fittings to decrease resistance - http://wizdforums.co.uk/showpost.php?p=3362&postcount=57

I did rebore the fittings, which dropped the resistance slightly. If I ever make an HDD block I'll go straight through 1/2" hole (I've got the bit for it). But then again, if I get hybridized, it won't really matter ;)

The Asetek one linked supports a 3/8" ID hole, but it might be smaller inside. Those seem to be the most supportive of bigger ID tubes out of the box. Of course you could modify one for pure 1/2" ID too ^_^ The choices and possibilities are endless.

Quoted for truth.
Fwiw, I reckon I add more heat to my loop by not cleaning the dust out of my rad often enough... ;)
In the rare case that you were running two drives at full access most of the time, you'd potentially add more considerable overall heat but I reckon you're ok. :)

What do you guys think about this by Koolance?

it looks like a waterbed. and looks like you could break that 'bag' pretty easy. or melt through it. I don't like it.
